My favorite is the guy doing the caulking....keeps plugging away at a thankless job...but the entire viability of the final boat is utterly dependent on his doing a good job. What he does is ultimately invisible....but without his tireless work and expertise this boat wouldn't last 2 years at sea. Amazing. KUDOS to the caulker.

First time I've second guessed their work... That end grain on the swim platform deck should have been better sealed.. would have been SO much easier to do before assembling as opposed to allowing that wood to be exposed to sea water in the future. Personally epoxy on that end grain would have made that last a LONG time... LOVE YABA!!!

The reason the seam compound is “sinking” is that it shrinks when it dryes. I am doing my deck now and am using non shrinking, sandable TDS compound designed specifically to no shrink. It’s expensive as hell but cheaper than the labor “mine” to do it twice. I’m off to do more today! Looking good. You guys are dogged and that is quite impressive.

@@SailingYaba Teak Decking Systems SIS440. Don’t feel too bad as there was such a big supply issue worldwide for it that I had to buy one or two tubes at a time from several stores around the US to finish my deck. For repairs in the future, there is no better stuff. Also, if you are going to varnish wood with a joint in it. The joint is where the varnish will fail first and cause a revarnish. If you route out the surface of the joint 6mm squared all along the joint and put a bead of 440 after you varnish then the joint will not fail. It looks good because it matches your deck.

I love the project ! I’m picturing that gigantic swim platform full of beautiful folks having a great time. I also can picture it in a big sea, slapping down in a moderate sea. When it breaks off I’m hoping it does not take a chunk of the transom with it. That would be a boat sinker.
@jabirucru69702 жыл бұрын
I agree, it’s too big! In a running sea if a wave gets under it the likely hood of pitchpoling is increased and as you say never mind the slamming.

That's what they've said about catamaran's underside... It's fine! A lot of jobs going on now. Nice to see the engine room getting paint. Be great to get the engine fitted in the boat. Some excellent work by your shipwrights. Sorry but I think that that swim platform is too big. I would have thought that 1.25 metres was more than big enough. It will be great in a bay at anchor but in a big sea I would be a bit worried. A nasty wave from astern and it is liable to get snapped off or at best spring all the transom planking. I hope you never get in those kind of seas but it is worth keeping in mind. If I am really honest it looks a bit ugly hanging off the back as it does. Fair winds & regards from the UK

The cartridge respirator is only good for ppm protection and when you are in confined spaces with no air movement you will overwhelm their capacity. The safest solution is to let her do the spraying! Just kidding the health of the both of you is priceless and the proper solution is to use supplied air or just McGiver a small hose from a dive tank to your dual cartridge mask and keep a small positive pressure. When MP talks about diving from the swim platform, and the wonderful gatherings around the dining table, doesn't it bring all of the hard work into focus and helps fix our sights on the goal..!! These steps may not be huge in visual expression of the achievements, but every plank and nail is bringing you closer to the reason you are doing all tis work now. It's so excting to watch this progress, and I love all the techniques of the joinery - mad skills by all of the craftsmen..!! How's the guy hammering the swim platform at a weird angle by the transom..!?? Makes it look easy, but we now it is not.!! Why is the swim platform so large? That could be an issue in rough seas, as waves will push up on that much surface area with more force.
@JHK662 жыл бұрын
Sorry guys, but the hole naval design of the boat and the fact that it‘s mainly hold together by nails, without being thoroughly protected by epoxy or Polyurethane at joints and open cutting lines and holes makes clear this is not a offshore vessel,better never come into a situation where the seastate would create a problem due to the size of the swimming plattform. At the same time most likely the planks would jump off the frames already….

I understand that its traditional on these boats, but this boat is not being used in the traditional manor, as mentioned in another comment here, Yaba will be used in open seas and oceans and a following sea and breaking waves could break the platform. Hopefully this will never happen, l also noticed the rigging wires are also attached to the platform too, if loosing the platform, this could also make the standing rigging weaker too. Maybe the platform could be made smaller and have a hinged section that could be lifted and folded out to make the platform bigger …?

You haven't talked about water-maker(s) or did I miss it. How about fresh-water tank(s), I should think at least 1,000 gallons.

I hate being one of those people but i have an oppinion based on experience. I like the fact that you have a gap in between the decking on the platform as it allows water to flow through which dampens the hit if its impacted from below by a wave. However, i think it should be screwed down because of the force pushing against the boards IF it gets hit from underneath. Not nailed down. But im not sure if this is of any relevance in your case. It looks like the platform is hanging quite high above sealevel, am i right? You are a pleasurecraft of significant size. You might never encounter such sizeable waves anyways for this to be even happening. I worked on a 16 metre workboat catamaran when i saw this the first time. The boat was brand new and had small platform on the back of each hull, working as bumpers for the waterjets. We had plastic gratings on top of them bolted down. After the first workday, both got washed away. The size of the rectangular holes where maybe 1,5 square centimetres. So we installed 5 cm gratings instead and that seemed to allow enough water to flow through to withstand the reduced impact.
