LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️ S1 Ep47 // For our sailboat interior we are transforming neglected spaces into clever solutions for the ultimate boat restoration project. Our approach to bulkhead replacement is anything but ordinary, asking even more from our design and functionality. And that's not all - our v-berth undergoes a captivating upgrade with the addition of custom LED strip lighting in a challenging location.
From unconventional bulkheads to innovative lighting solutions, every corner of our sailboat has been reimagined to achieve the a balance between form and function. Our commitment to coming up with small sailboat interior design ideas that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Did we succeed??

This was a fun and easy build that made a big difference in some small spaces! Another great job to Fernando and Eduardo at Mobili Mare, two amazing carpenters that we are learning a lot from. Are there any strange spaces on your boat that you would like to make useful??

it's been a period that I've been standing still because of the great heat and my diabetes creating problems; today I got to 49 blood sugar- Of strange spaces we have already seen many--too many, like certain valves that were later closed with steel lids that they welded on. Oa you have to cut metal, to replace the valves, now my partner is taking care of that. But I see you are well covered,but are you cold? Yesterday q Piombino temperatures reached over 41 degrees Celsius.

As I watch several refit channels, including this one, I am reminded of a boat designer I worked with for several years while I was a manufacturing manager at major powerboat manufacturer. My production associates and I used to get very frustrated with him because he could never seem to make up his mind until there was no more time before the product needed to be in mass production. His response when we would pressure him was a classic that has stuck with me to this day: "Indecision is the key to flexibility."

😂😂 Love that! He has a point though we can see where that last minute thing would be rather inconvenient. We do try to plan ahead for all our ideas and we do a fair amount of drawing. However there is a lot left to improvisation because of the unpredictable spaces. Like this bulkhead for instance, the gap was never in the plan but we made it work and love extra spaces that it resulted in. Not sure about indecision, but flexibility is key. Cheers!

Good work on the use of space. LED lighting is durable and will consume less power. As you're making a hybrid - electric and sail/wind boat. This will definitely be good. To secure the wine bottles, may I suggest transparent acrylic. Won't use more space and you can see through the bottles. What about tye engine controls, Have you sourced the controls, communication equipment, sat phone just in case of emergency, GPS navigation equipment? Lifejacket looks good. Where are you going to store the food and medicines? Any storage space for that. You will require extra of that. Mini fridge for meds and perishable food items. Motorized Dinghy for going ashore or emergencies again with portable comms equipment and flood light and a little food stored in it always. A small mechanical crane (chain and pulley) to lift and store the dinghy on the boat. Now when you do all this, are you calculating the CG or centre of gravity of the boat, because that should not be compromised at all. Never. Thats what will keep your boat balanced and afloat. Of course you have weight / ballast like wooden bulkheads, fridge, comms equipment, dinghy, personal equipment, food. But all this needs to be placed in a balanced manner.

Another thing your boat should have is an LED flood light with swivel, so you can look into the water or far ahead, with a good polished concave lens which will send the beam of light far. Light can also be helpful in comms with other ships, SOS.

Ive noticed you are treating the wood that is going against the hull or wood that may get wet with epoxy or some type of water repellent sealer. Are you planning on removing all the wood pieces and treating them before the final assembly.

keep looking for spaces just like you have been. It is surprising where you can find wasted space to make more storage available on a boat. Often the hardest part is figuring out how to access it. Keep up the great work, she is starting to look nearly livable.
@lahakai
@lahakai 10 ай бұрын
Access is the key isn't it! And in small boats it's so easy to lose some good spaces (galley being a good example). You must have great storage on your boat, she's quite spacious as it is!

The water that will condense from hull, will not damage the plywood over the time?
@lahakai

The wood is marine grade plywood so it has water-resistant properties. It’s raw right now, but it will be treated and painted so it will be very durable for humid environments.

I guess then all the furniture will have to be painted...I already have a headache...😂😂😂. As for the wine...you know Italy is the largest producer es exporter of wine because...because...if you come to Italy, I live in Piombino right in front of Elba Island, I will make you understand why Italy is world famous for wines. Regarding life jackets the guys at Sailing UMA, Dan and Kika, have very but very compact life jackets that instead of two standar jackets fit at least 6, try to contact them; they would be in Sardinia right now for a restoration of their boat

It would be our immense pleasure to taste Italian wine in Italy! 🍷🙏 Good to know about the life jackets. Perhaps its something we need to buy once we are sailing because here in Brazil there are few options and they are very expensive. Would be great to trade these out for smaller ones and use the space for something else!

I get it, your home (boat) is your castle, but with all the interior design, mood lights etc. -will it float better, the cg in the right position, and have good sailing capabilities? After all, every little bit of added weight will slow it down, and make it less maneuverable. Many details don’t affect super yachts, because they are big, and some additional kilos don’t make a difference, but on a small boat like this, you have to think twice, if not multiple times, if the “perks” are worth it to reduce sailing capabilities. Don’t get me wrong, from a visual standpoint what you are doing is nice, but think about, that everything weight wise above the cg is acting like a lever against the stability of the boat in the water, so a couple of kilos become a lot of kilos depending on the distance from the cg. and that means, that the danger of capsizing becomes an issue.

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs

@@lahakai, while I agree with Steve Jobs to a certain degree, but “good” design does not mean, that it doesn’t have to take care of every aspect, it can only be good if it also works as intended in combination with everything else involved. If you take a Ferrari, but motorize it’s with a 500cc two stroke engine, it might be pleasant to look at, but not to drive 😜
