During the 1980s US cars had to have the speedometer that stopped at 85 MPH and emphasised 55 MPH. That law was later repealed.

Matt, Just a joy to watch. I never realized how expensive these were “back in the day, and all that” there were a fair few to be seen in Florida during my child hood. The “Front wheel drive” emblem above the steering column is simply a cover up for the PRNDL window on column shifted cars. Also, by 1985/86 the 2.2 Turbo was available as the top engine option just like the PT&A hero car. So: Chrysler Lebaron Town and Country Mark Cross edition Turbo….If they put all those emblems together on the trunk lid they’d have had to make the car wider

Not withstanding Planes ,Trains & Automobiles.... Jerry Seinfeld: So did you pick up the Volvo? George Costanza: Actually no...I went with a Chrysler LeBaron convertible. George Costanza: [singing in car] Everybody's talkin' at me, I can't hear a word they're sayin', just drivin' around in Jon Voight's car. Jerry Seinfeld: OK, lets have a look in the glove box.......ah!... pencil! George Costanza: Hey... you don't think... sure, that's Jon Voight's pencil! Jerry Seinfeld: With Jon Voight's teeth marks. [pulls out the owners manual from the glove box] Jerry Seinfeld: Owner's manual... you know what? This car was owned by Jon Voight. George Costanza: Ah! See? I told ya. Jerry Seinfeld: Except Jon is spelled with an H. J-O-H-N. George Costanza: So? Jerry Seinfeld: Doesn't Jon Voight spell his name J-O-N? George Costanza: So, what are you saying? Jerry Seinfeld: Nothing. I'm sure "Jon" probably mispelled his own name. I know sometimes I spell Jerry with a G... and an I! [laughing uproariously] George Costanza: [agitated] Get out of the car! Jerry Seinfeld: What? George Costanza: That's right, you heard me. Get out. You are ruining this whole experience for me. Jerry Seinfeld: Oh, look! There's Gregory Peck's bicycle! George Costanza: Get out! Jerry Seinfeld: And Barbara Mandrell's skateboard! George Costanza: Get out! _the door is a jar_

My mom had an 88 Lebaron Town and Country woody wagon with white through the 90s when I was growing up. I think 88 was the last year for the true k cars. There was a modified k platform called the "double A" body after that. Examples of that are the Dodge Spirit and Plymouth Acclaim.

If you ask me, those LeBarons actually were pretty sharp looking cars. Maybe a bit reserved and conservative, but still very stylish. The right amount of chrome, big bold grille, the right body lines. The fake wood paneling on the sides, though... yeah I think that was ugly even in the 80s. Where the car says 'Front Wheel Drive' is actually supposed to be the PRNDL if it was a column shift car, but this car had the optional console mounted shifter, so they had to put something there lol. They kept doing that for many years across many models, as floor/console shift remained an optional extra. Or, of course, if you had a manual transmission, which was a little bit rare on higher end cars like the LeBaron, but more common on cheaper models like Plymouths. The 'funny movements with the key to get it out' might also be a byproduct of this. The steering column lock looks like the type that would be on a manual transmission car, as it was a safety so you wouldn't just pull the key out... I guess to remind you to apply the parking brake. An automatic car would have a shift interlock so the key could only be removed with the shifter in Park, and would not have the release button. But I guess they didn't yet have a version for an automatic without the column shifter, which I think would not have had the button to press to release the key, which was for manual cars. Also where is says 'Computer Equipped,' I think that was referring to the car in general, mostly the trip computer. I'm pretty sure there is no computer at all to do with the climate control.

Road-tripped a Dodge Aries K-platform (4-door) from SEA-TAC to San Diego to Las Vegas to SEA-TAC in 1987 because it was the only hire car I could find that was made in the USA (everything at the big name rental places was Japanese or out of my price range). It drove just how FD says, and slowed down a lot when you put the air-con on.

The amount of tail lights used on 80s Chrysler products is truly mind boggling. Because everything was based on the same car, Chrysler constantly gave many models mild facelifts to try to differentiate them and keep them fresh. Thus a car like the Dodge 600 had 3 different tail lights over 6 years.

I had a friend in the early 1990s who'd buy FWD Dodge 600s, Plymouth Caravelles, Chrysler LeBarons, Chrysler New Yorkers for $500-1000, drive them until something broke, sell or part them out and buy another. They seemed to stand up to abuse fairly well. They were considered pretty obsolete and disposable by the market though.

Great road test of this American icon; these are "nostalgic/classy" now, while they were just "tacky" in 1983! That Mitsubishi 2.6 liter got around; it also was an option in the "K Vans", IIRC, and an optional engine for the 1986 or so Mazda "B-Series" pickups (the "B2600i" as I recall)...The movie is a classic, too! Thanks for the ride-along!

They were also the top engine option in Aussie built Mitsubishi Sigma's (of the late '70's to early '80s) and standard on the Mitsubishi Scorpion coupe (my uncle had one of these, and my young self thought it was the coolest car around) and also did service in the Mitsubishi Magna from the mid '80's up to the mid '90's (although mostly in fuel injected form, although some of the earliest cars were still carb'). Cheers!

This edition was special and rare when new. Just seeing the first-year 1983 convertible was pretty exciting after no new American made convertibles for seven years. The retro vibe was strong at the time (music, movies, and clothes). There was also a promo version of the regular prototype convertible with a "rumble seat" in the style of the 20's -30's. My family usually had bought Chrysler corporation vehicles (including Simca) and it was embarrassing to see the company's decline in the 1970's chaos caused by bad planning and greedy executives (along with labor issues) led to the disastrous Aspen/Volare. I liked K-cars and they were good for what they were. I drove many of them and owned an "H" Dodge Lancer. which was a great car. BTW, Chrysler would introduce the built-in cup holder for the 1984 model year (after having some earlier models with indents in the open glove compartment door). 1n 1983 if you wanted something better then you bought door/window mount cupholders from the dealer or auto parts store.

Uh, we had a Dodge version of that (Dodge 600 ES Turbo). Your higher end K Car. Was fun to drive, a blast with the top down and the top leaked water into the trunk and every single one I've ever come across. Gave the trunk a wonderful earthy smell and one could not really use the trunk in the rain. Saying that, it is a convertible, why use it in the rain... After this fiasco Chrysler started making their own convertibles and stopped farming that work out... Was fun to drive though.... One more thing, my parents had a Dodge aspen that was THAT color green, with a white vinyl top. 4 door, of course.
