this was also a week where i punched a lot out and then was able to have a 3 day weekend. So I know this looks like a lot but I try to structure my life this way so that I can have more time off :) plus, the beginning and end of the year is the busiest time for most content creators so pls dont let my whacky schedule for this week scare you lol looking back as i edit this, it scares me haha
timestamps:
2:32 - my favorite life/work/dreams organizing tool
9:15 - when and how did i go full time?
11:38 - how many hours do i work?
12:40 - how do i get paid and how much?
15:26 - how do i get sponsorships?
17:11 - how do i stay organized and deal with loneliness?
18:40 - is this a "real job?"
20:42 - how is my work life balance?
21:01 - does monetizing hobbies take the joy out of them?
21:46 - is this a forever job?
23:41 - favorite and least favorite thing?
26:19 - tough love :')

My dad operates heavy machinery for a living and loves it! Says it's like playing in a giant sandbox, and he still can't believe he gets paid for it, even though he's been doing it for 40 years. I think as a society we have this image that a "real job" has to be hard and draining, but just because you love doing something doesn't mean it's not hard work! Also I am with you on loving working for myself. I love setting my own schedule, giving myself tasks and deadlines, and not having to wait for higher-ups to make the decisions! I think I'd have a hard time going back to full-time employment because of that. My first couple years I burned myself out terribly, though, because I did the same and just worked all the time. When you're self-employed, the to-do list really never ends! I've been working really hard the last 2 years to find a balance that works for me, and I think I'm finally getting there. It takes a lot of practice and experimenting and reflection, that's for sure!

I always come back to your vlogs because it still has that authentic unproduced early youtube video feel that a lot of big vloggers have left today. No pretentious walk by and perfect landscape framing. I don't feel rushed watching and it makes me so calm. Loved your advice! Just begun posting myself (only YT Shorts) after deciding to get over feeling too old to post videos or that they’d suck and instead use the platform to learn how to create content. And I loved how you aren’t sensational with your advice like others who push out advice that’s about how to get big or create the perfect video for the algorithm. Makes us amateurs feel like we can use the site and it not just being a site for the best in the business. Saying that your videos are amazing btw! Watch every week. 😊

Very late to this vid but wanted to share that I COMPLETELY relate to how the people in your life take your job more seriously than you do/asking for money!! I am reaching 1 year of tattooing, which pretty much feels like I’m self employed. Hearing that you also struggle with these concepts is so comforting honestly, it felt like a hug from a big sis (: Also wanted to share that I have a super part time job (like 2 days a week) (in San Diego!!) at a tea shop and that feels like my social enrichment time - highly recommend if/when y’all move back for some balance (: Excited to see your Japan vids! I’ll be going myself at the end of Feb so very much looking forward to seeing what you get up to!!

Watching this much later Cari. I remember when the pandemic was starting you were probably one of the first few channels that came to my feed on foreigners living abroad. As a young woman who would like to travel outside of America and explore more of the world someday, it’s always amazing to see how people live their lives in different parts of the world and you show it so well in every video that you do no matter where you go. I know that sitting a lot and editing is a lot of work to do. I myself am self-employee, but also working a second job so I’m part-time/an independent contractor it’s hard to describe it for me. I keep track of budgeting and schedules since I’m a private music teacher, so I completely understand that and keeping track on paying bills. I’ve been doing the small business/independent contract work in the music store teaching music lessons for now almost 3 years and I’ve definitely learned some things as well as I go. I do enjoy what I do but I know specially here, in the states it’s a bit more tougher with the economy especially when my earnings aren’t consistent at all certain pay but I’m hoping to get a little bit more of a stable job and can still teach at the music store. I do my best to work smarter & though I’m not earning as much as my old job I am more content to do what I like & I don’t do KZbin like seriously for making money but I like to just put and share content as well. I agree as well with the algorithm sometimes, some videos go really well sometimes. I’ve done videos & some shorts which for the shorts have definitely went really well and figuring out the algorithm depending on the time and what the topic of the day is about. As you mentioned it just based on the algorithm and it varies every day. I like to share to content for fun & I don’t see myself doing KZbin ever full-time, but if I ever have enough content and somehow earn extra money on the side, I can’t complain about that. It’s definitely been a learning journey for me being self-employed/independent contractor life and still figuring out the balance of life and work and trying to give myself some breathing time to relax. Plus my brother gave me a helpful tip on paying taxes which is putting me at ease. As someone who also sits a lot at her jobs & needs to move more, thanks for sharing a mazing content with us Cari

I have to say I am so glad I found your channel. I heavily watched your videos both pregnancies and it helped me a lot. My second pregnancy was rocky with my baby having heart problems, and you helped me wind down on the anxiety. I first found your channel because I was looking stuff up about Korea. My hubbies coworker wants us to come visit with her sometime (and open a book cafe lmao). I love how interesting your content is. I love cafes and the way your videos portray Korea. What really hooked me is your independence and explanation of the world. I aspire to be as ambitious as you with travel as I rarely go to the next city over. I think you should take a visit to Arizona one day and venture through Sedona. :D Don't look down on your Cafe book store dream. I think you would do amazing and have amazing stories to share with your customers. Money cant buy that special addition to your business ;). I too want to own my own cafe one day and know how that mindset is easily set. You are truly a positive influencer and I believe you help a lot of people in many ways. Dont be so hard on yourself. I know easier said than done. I am a stay at home mommy haha. It does feel bad to have a job you love sometimes. :)

I’m an absolute nobody with 0 followers on goodreads and I love writing pretty long reviews for almost every book I read. Mostly it’s for me as a little time capsule so I can go back and see what I thought of a book, but I also like the thought of someone else finding my reviews and seeing my thoughts/opinions and agreeing or disagreeing and having a “conversation” with other book readers like how I read other people’s reviews.

I love your videos and think they’re so beautifully edited. Would you ever consider making a teaching type video or class on editing?

Cari, my sweet love. I appreciate you so much. Everything you do, and all your efforts. I watch all your vlogs. The travel vlogs more than once! ❤ You have an amazing eye, and I love seeing SK, through your eyes. Big hugs from the Bay Area. ❤

this was such a great q&a - not that your other q&as haven't been! (see, I'm doing that whole talking/explaining thing too much, too lmao) anyway, great thoughts and views on things, useful comments, realistic advice, the works! I was just nodding along :) while I do imagine burn out is something to look out for when you're suddenly your own boss, I also imagine that sticking to the only 40 hours maybe isn't AS important when you're mixing work and hobbies like this. it might be for a video/work, but reading a book is still also healing time so if you squeeze in another chapter here or there or whatever, it'll probably weigh you down less than if your boss always asked you to stay an hour later at the office. so when you love your job (any job really), having longer work hours probably isn't as big of a burden as it could be otherwise.

Cari!! If you ever decide to move to the states I would highly recommend working as a library assistant! I don’t have a college degree and am a library assistant and it’s awesome! I’m in philly (I know your family is in PA!) and I literally just read all day. There isn’t a ton of actual work to get done so I read and knit and my coworkers do schoolwork and it’s just a great and relaxing environment to work in! And after 10 years you get a pension!!! If you ever move back I highly recommend looking into it!

I really like Mirror! Most browsers have already the hability to create folders and so but not in this specific way which I think it’s way more intuitive. Cool cool! May give a shout out in one of my videos too. Really cool that he started with macOS 😉 (I’m a big Apple fan) Loving your videos so far. Hoping to visit Seoul soon 😊

I found you because of that appartment tour, back in the day. That tour was AMAZING. Everything was so neat and perfect in that place and you looked like you were a part of it, too. Same with Sissel... I also found her due to her apartment series and I think 2hearts1seoul did a moving vlog, when they were suggested to me... I really like real estate and apartment videos... but I also like Korea, Japan and Chinese historical fantasy dramas 😅

Loved this, thank you for sharing! You are amazing at what you do and you should give as much credit to yourself as your loved ones do 💕 Your content is always amazing and extremely high quality, you deserve all the praise (and monies ;) ) On another note, I 'm wondering if you've talked before in any of your videos on how you go about discovering music to use on your videos? Do you reach out to the artists you discover on say Soundcloud/ Bandcamp? The vibes are always on point. (Also, I've been listening to your night in neon city playlist on repeat almost exclusively for the past few weeks - it's immaculate )

I spend hours and hours on soundcloud but after a few years i started using paid services like artlist (link in description!) because a lot of times the bandcamp/soundcloud artists would eventually get signed to management (good for them!!!) and i would get demonetized even tho they gave me permission to use their tracks 🥲 something to think about!

Mate, the lists I have (which will become mirror tabs once it comes to Windows) because you go out and about, and "sit in cafe's" is plentiful... When I visit Seoul, know that your promoting a place, suggesting hikes/locations etc. is going to make an awesome travel experience for me... whatever you need to rename yourself to feel like your work is worthy, then please find that label, as you are a very important person in my life and at least 389,000 people agree
