Click here for Part 1: • A World Of Commercial ...
In a world of commercial fishing that is so unknown to most of us, I couldn't find any in depth videos on what it's really like working on a king mackerel gill netting boat. I was given the opportunity to film EVERYTHING and share with you the reality of what it's like catching tens of thousands of pounds of king mackerel in a highly regulated and sustainable fishery.
Huge thanks to the G&D crew for giving me this incredible opportunity and for taking the time to explain every little detail to me about this industry. You all really helped make this video shine!
All of the music played after the intro song was recorded by one of my favorite Key West musicians, Chris Rehm. I'm so glad I got to use his music and thanks Chris for allowing me to do so! Check out his links below:

In case you didn't make it to the end of the video, my full time job is DJ'ing events. It's what I've been doing since I was a kid and have been full time for 13 years. I have this idea that if I could get hired to DJ a party that you or someone you know is hosting, I could stick around for a few days and also film a Once A Stranger episode. Maybe you could also help me find a story to tell 🤷‍♂ I am set up to travel with my gear and I just got back from DJ'ing a friends wedding in Guatemala, so international travel is OK with me as well. Let me know what you think and below is all my DJ socials to get a better understanding of how I work. Together, let's host a killer party! I had a mate in Harvey bay Australia he was a scallop trawler owner, I went out on a week long trip once and realised how hard it is on the sea to make a living it’s not a job but a way of life ,unfortunately a cyclone was heading for Harvey bay several months later and he didn’t want to be in the harbour when it hit,so he sailed into the the storm and him and his trawler were lost in the storm all others on board were recovered but Tony was never found ,so enjoy your seafood as some pay the ultimate price for us to do so

I know a few lost to the sea. Wrote a pretty good called" Quiet Bay". " I fish the oceans, don't farm the dirt. In the summer and the winter, I do that work. Climbing those 20 foot mountains, each and every day. And think about when I'll see, my quiet quiet bay."

Do all the popular fisheries. I would love to watch. Crab season is ending why don't you do some grouper fishing? Start on a bandit boat and then do the long line next. Come October get on a stone crab boat and show these people what real work is like. Please and thank you.

Back in the 90's when I was a teenager I worked for Buck and Dewey Destin. Destin bait company. I started on a small boat before graduating to the bigger net boats. We were only allowed 500 pounds of Spanish mackerel per boat back then. We caught 3/4 of a million pounds of lady fish once. So much that we called the competition to come get fish from Panama City. I later ended up working on a crab ship in the Bering sea. I was on Nick Mcglashin's dads boat when Nick was a teenager. RIP Nick

We gill netted mullet in the 70s. We did it the same way, on a smaller scale. We had a hand built wooden boat with 300 yards of net. We would circle an active school, and then beat the water to scare them into the nets. We then hand hauled the net back into the boat, removing the fish as we went. It was common to catch 600-800lbs of fish... sometimes more... in one strike. We would then process and ice the fish, distributing them among the community back home. Times were different back then.

My guess is they don't worry about it, because they only fish in calm seas, and the water is warm enough that they can swim for hours, I fish in Alaska, where after a few minutes in the water, most people aren't able to swim because they get too cold, and it's almost always rough water, and though we're not required to where pfds, most of us do.

Let’s recap: Roughly 650,000 (ish) pounds of quota allotted for the season market. Divided by 14 licenses = 46,500 (ish) pounds per license. Trip 1: 19,500 pounds Trip 2: 0 pounds Trip 3: 7,500 pounds Trip 4: 2,300 pounds Total weight: (call it) 30,000 pounds harvested king mackerel. Quota divided equally amongst 14 licenses: 46,500 (ish) pounds. Daily operating expenses extrapolated from the lobster video: $1,300 Times 4= $5,200 loss in daily operating costs. 30,000 pounds divided by equal share of 14 licenses at 46,500 pounds of quota: 64.5% of quota potential per license. Other boats (or at least 1 other boat) harvested (according to dialogue from this video) 100,000+ pounds of the quota. OR… over 200% of quota market share between 14 licenses. There’s your markets winner. Fishing is risky RISKY business.

You should go crabbing with those guys since you already have a relationship with them.

That'd a great vid, but thinking of crabbing with another guy who has the largest amount of traps in Florida. I did do a lobster one with this crew though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGqopqZ6o5uFebs

So why a purse gillnet rather than just a normal purse seine? Why wait several hours to pull the net in?

Not sure what the final payout was, but it's based on the amount of fish they catch. Because this one was considered a small catch, not as good as past years. Once the boat expenses are paid for, each crew member gets a percentage of what's left over depending on their ranking.
