My first KZbin video that isn't just a Procreate timelapse! Hello, everyone! My name is Ryan, and thank you so much for checking out my little passion project, Mustelon. I've always wanted to make my own speculative evolution project, and after seeing more and more of them pop up on KZbin, I figured I should claim this idea before someone else did! The audio needs some work (this is my first time using my fancy microphone), but that should improve as time goes on. I'm making a fair bit of this up as I go, so I'm open to feedback if you have any in terms of production quality, or even the science behind the animals.
I'm hoping for this to be a longform series, and eventually an art book/bestiary! If you'd like to support this project becoming a printed book, feel free to support me on Patreon:
patreon.com/artofryancox
And to see more of my art, check out my Instagram:

Adding the green anole was probably a mistake, knowing how reptiles act when the niche of a top predator is empty… looking at you dinosaurs.

That's what the mammalians are for. Plus, anoles are mostly insectivorous, meaning that the anoles will end up being terrestrial secondary consumers for the most part in the near future, as far as I forsee.

@@justaguyontheinternet3893 See, here's the thing... weasels, skunks, badgers, and even mice and squirrels are omnivorous, and some even share their home range with geckos and other reptilian creatures. With the anole population getting large, they would logically slide into the niche of preying on anoles due to the abundant food source. Just because it's not a natural predator of anoles doesn't mean that anoles won't become prey for them.

Here’s some fan lore: Skunks we’re stowaway species sneaking on to the ships that transported the animals there. They hid in small unable to reach areas of the ships and stayed until they reach to mustelon. And the reason they snuck on is because of food and mice. They will come out of their hiding places up once they reach to mustelon.

An idea that I think would work is an otter descendent that fills the niche of a bear. 1 otters are related to bears 2 because of the abundance of food and no other prey in the water they will over populate and have to start our competing each other or become purely land animals.

Good thing for you, You can use fossil Mustelids to see how you're first medium sized herbivores, omnivores and carnivores could look like so that's fun. Edit: I'm very interested in spec evo as well and believe a lot of body plans could evolve on this planet some I believe are more likely to evolve are ground sloth, Felid, Ursid, ungulate and primate body plans I believe the Ungulate body plan will be more likely to evolve as the Pig tailed Bandicoot (this animal is a Marsupial) and of course ungulates have evolved hooved feet there is a rodent that has nearly evolved hooves it is called the Agouti so I think ungulate like mammals and felid like mammals are more likely to evolve. Also I am now a new sub so hope that makes you happy like this video did for me.

I feel like a sea otter equivalent will quickly end up re-emerging and both they and either trout-descended or salmon-descended fish will quickly become the dominant ocean lifeform, with yellow perch remaining mostly freshwater creatures. This is for the following reasons: 1.) Nature abhors a vacuum. If it finds a niche, it will fill said niche, sometimes even recursively creating new niches in the process. 2.) Sockeye Salmon are only freshwater fish during the beginning and end of their lives. For everything in between, they are saltwater fish. 3.) Brown Trout have managed to establish populations in saltwater bodies, and have been named "Sea Trout", "Bull Trout", "Peel"/"Peal", "Sewin", "Mort", "Finnock", "White Trout", "Dollaghan", or "Salmon Trout" when they do so, depending on where you are in the british isles, or if you're using them for culinary purposes in the case of that last one. Notably, they end up acting quite similar to Sockeye Salmon when this happens in terms of their lifestyle. 4.) Yellow Perch have not shown the same euryhalinity as the above two species, and as such, are limited solely to freshwater environments. 5.) With the euhaline tertiary consumer niche covered by points 2 and 3, there will logically be a coastal quaternary consumer niche open that, as semiaquatic creatures, otters and otter-descended creatures are predisposed to fill. 6.) As time passes, these partly-to-fully aquatic species will start ranging further and further out to sea in an evolutionary arms race of sorts. This will logically mean that there will end up being a fully-oceanic version of at least one of the fish and the otters, given enough time.

@ryancoxart
@ryancoxart 4 ай бұрын
I think I can help a bit. This is my first seed world, so I can only tell you what I've learned so far. To start with, make sure you do your research. Research climate, plate tectonics, biomes, and especially research the lifeforms that you'll be using. If you want to make it unique, it isn't too difficult. Some things I'd like to try in the future are make the planet itself different from how earth is, like maybe the soil has more copper than iron, or maybe the entire planet only has one climate, like an ice world. You could try using an animal that no one else is using, or a mix of animals. You could even ask what if a planet was populated with genetically engineered animals that don't exist in the real world, or what if you introduced earth animals to a planet that already has its own alien animals. The possibilities truly are endless. Don't forget to research common trends in evolution and how the environment affects the animals that live in it. You need to know the science, but don't forget the fiction part of "science fiction". Don't be afraid to get a little bizarre with it, and have fun! I hope that helps! I'd love to see whatever you come up with! :)

Anoles will probably develop to become even more arborial to avoid predators. What if they start to evolve gliding-flaps to glide and then true powered flight later on? There's no large flying animals in this seed world (only insects) and those niches have to be filled.

Loved this! Are these critters from 12 million years after the planet was seeded or is that just how long the period was in general? I'm asking, since bear sized predators like Ankalagon were already appearing by about 3 million years after the K-Pg.
@ryancoxart
@ryancoxart 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! :) Personally I think these guys probably came about halfway through the Inceptocene, although honestly there's every chance that later down the line I may go back and tweak a few details to make more sense. But my thought process in this instance was that with lack of the competition they faced on Earth, these guys would probably fill quite a few niches fairly quickly
@DragonsoftheCenozoic
@DragonsoftheCenozoic 4 ай бұрын
@@ryancoxart Oh I didn't mean to imply that it felt like animals of this size emerged too quickly. More the opposite. When you said 12 million in the video, I thought that the Stink Hound and the Prairi Hog were too small to be among the largest animals because by 10 Million years after the K-Pg extinction we were already seeing 2 ton giants herbivores like Uintatherium and bear sized carnivores, but knowing that they're earlier than that makes their size seem much more reasonable.

i'm doing a speculative evolution project with a main species of mustelid!! they're called sivi and they're descended from some variation of pine marten/sable, they're sapient (not quite as smart as humans yet) and semi bipedal (referencing how my favorite animal (the stoat) stands up) it's more of a creative story project, but with my own takes on their evolution

I'm so glad to see color varients and exploration and depictions of the descendants' behaviors. thats the major thing that has bugged me with this new boom of spec evo, its more of just the speculatice linear progression but nature isn't just point A to point Z in a straight line. it branches and morphs and changes, there can be subspecies, multiple descendents, strange behavior adapted for certain situations, and more. I want to see more of that!! delve into each and every tint crevice of this world you're creating

1) I must admit that for a Spec Evo Project which came around almost a decade ago, it have take time that others Seed Workd Spec Projects like Serina the World of Birds came out in a noticeable degree. Here, since around 1 year and an half, there have been a clear "boom" wave of Serina-like Seed Worlds which have pop up online (mostly on KZbin but also a little elsewhere). And you being just among these in this sort of ocean. To be fair, even if all these projects are basically "copy-paste" version of Serina but with the canaries replaced by another main veterbrate subject, I still find interesting all these differents takes on this subgenre of Spec Evo that Serina introduced and impose. I'm interested what will you do with this one with Mustelids and Mephitid :) 2) Just to ask, it will not be a problem and a limitation that all the main dominant subject species of Mustelids and Mephitid are mainly predatory carnivorous species ? Usually, the main focus seeded species is an animal very flexible, generalist and opportunistic regarding its diet, in order for it to radiate and be in most niches as possible to survived extinctions. Here, meat/fish composed the great majority or entire diet of all the Musteloid species you introduce. Meaning they will or would remain/restrict themselves to being predators, and like all predators, very succeptible and vulnerable to how the herbivores and preys species are doing. And predators are usually the very first animals to face repercussion of extinction events. Thankfully, small descendant of the seeded species still feeding on small typical ancestral rodent-like herbivores will survive, as mustelid such marten, ferret etc... can survived entirely only by eating mouses/rats, but in order for that so, would have to retain the ancestral bodyplan of their seeded ancestors. In fact, one probleme with Musteloid, is that their typical long, fin, slender, gracile, short face with strong bite and short legged body made them already ultra efficient and effective for almost any tasks, niches or situations. Otters have evolved from typical land ferret/like mustelids without undergoing notable anatomical changes. As an example. So, aside increasing or decreasing in size, all species of Mustelid would not technically give descendants that are significantly differents from their ancestors in appearance. Indeed, why changing its appearance if the latter can adapt already and is efficient to all situations ?
