Hey guys! Thanks so much for the crazy reception to this video! I'm blown away it's bonkers!! Just wanted to respond to some common fair critiques I've been getting. 1)) a number of comments suggested that, without their normal food of fish, all of the Alligator Snapping Turtles would simply starve to death. I disagree! Alligator snappers are opportunistic, eating basically anything they can including crayfish, mollusks, amphibians, snakes, worms, water birds, rodents, even small alligators (1). But they don't just supplement their diet with stuff other than fish. In some areas, for example, 90% of their diet consists of freshwater mussels (2)(3). These turtles are not nearly as specialised in fish as some people have suggested, and their diet tends to consist of whatever happens to be abundant in the area. Therefore, I think that billions of triops, with many probably growing much larger than their ancestors in as short a time span as a single turtle's lifetime, would be plenty to sustain healthy breeding populations basically anywhere. However, I did make some mistakes! In my intro vid I asserted that Alligator Snapping Turtles were omnivores, but they are actually almost entirely carnivorous. I seem to have gotten their diets confused with that of the Common Snapping Turtle, which are much more omnivorous, with plant matter making up about a third of their diet (4). The only amendment I'd make here then is that herbivory would probably take longer to evolve than other lifestyles. 2)) Some people have pointed out that the size of the giant butterflies is a bit of a stretch, and on this one I agree. The biggest flying insect ever discovered, the giant Dragonfly relative Meganeura, has a wingspan of about 70cm (5), so it seems reasonable that this is an upper limit on size. I did neglect to mention that Kappa's oxygen levels are much higher than earth, as the c02 levels fuels plant growth that raises the oxygen. So, the insects on Kappa will probably grow to similar sizes to carboniferous arthropods, with the giant butterflies reaching comparable size to Meganeura. 3)) Others have let me know that a belt of literally BOILING oceans would lead to both a catastrophic runaway greenhouse effect, and eternal hypercanes that would scour the surface clean (Thanks to @pokemonfanmario7694 and @8kayydub8). I think my bri'ish was showing when i said 'boiling', as I meant more around 70 celsius or something. When it's hot in the UK we call it 'boiling' as a figure of speech. So yeah, that's still hot enough to cook you alive (in a few minutes) and would be very steamy, but not literally boiling. Hopefully these lower temperatures would leave the rest of the planet habitable. 4)) It's been pointed out to me that the monarch butterfly caterpillars lay their larvae exclusively on flowering plants called Milkweeds (6), (thanks to @arepenguinsawesome2279) so I'm adding them to the list of initially seeded species. 5)) Another seed list amendment is the Luna Moth. I just picked them because they looked super interesting, and didn't know that they exclusively lay their eggs in the canopies of woody plants (7). Since I don't want any trees on Kappa (yet), they're gonna have to go :(( 6)) I've also seen some questions pointing out that triops eggs need a period of desiccation before hatching, and that's normally the case. However, I've seen reports from Triops breeders that they often have some eggs from every batch hatch before they can drain the tank and dry them out (8). My guess is it's an adaptation to more effectively exploit resources in ephemeral pools that last longer than normal. So in Kappa's soaking wet world, any triops with this adaptation will obviously be selected for, and they'll expand rapidly. 7)) I might have to look at the insect list and add more in, as the pollinating plants need specific creatures to pollinate them. Wasn't aware of this before actually (thanks to @BT-eo4gh). Might need to add some flies in for example. I do really want this to be as scientifically plausible as possible, so thanks so much for all the feedback everyone! You still missed some extremely important things: 1 - Without natural predators (different from other turtles) why would a turtle keep it's shell? Over time, it is very likely that different groups of turtles will exchange their hard shell for things like mobility and agility. I have no idea how would that look like, it's your world, not mine, but it is an important point. 2 - There are species that adapt for very warm (even hot) environment, so your almost boiling tropical ocean will be a place where new species of turtles will slowly reach. An extreme example for such adaptation would be the volcanic snail. 3 - I don't know what your idea for the continents is, but if you have only two, there is a very high chance the planet itself will simply explode at some point because of the pressure build between the only two continental plates. 4 - If you add more continental plates, it would make sense to get at least small volcanoes. You can keep them to the height you said you wanted, no problem, but this will generate some diversity in the terrain. Volcanoes are a natural occurrence on any planet with active core (so earth-like; lava, magma and so on). 5 - One of the great extinction events on our planet is theorized to have occurred partially because of large amount of dead plant matter underground being set on fire by a super volcano (or something like that, it should be the extinction event before the dinosaurs, and the reason why insects don't rule the Earth from there on). If you want to prevent that, you might benefit from evolving something like gigantic worms that can eat a lot more than their normal counterparts so there is not enough dead plant matter accumulating deep underground over time to allow something like that to happen. Besides that, there are other things, but whatever, those 5 (actually 6 with the bottom one) are some of the major points I did not see you mention. It really is your world and you could ignore all of these, BUT you said you wanted to look at it in somewhat realistic way. You could use the volcanoes as an excuse to have a snapper evolve a literal metal shell, while it is a stretch, it's definitely not completely impossible. Oh, and last, but not least: the insects will also evolve here. A LOT. In the future of your world (under realistic circumstances), they will be what challenges the rule of your snapping turtles. I'm talking about insects the size of a Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex).

Love what you did with the first episode!!! Love the idea of there being only 1 vertebrate species!!! Also love the inclusion of the triops and their evolution!!! However I did want to suggest a possible scenario about the alligator snaping turtle. I find it hard to believe that the alligator snaping turtle is capable of surviving on just plants (life finds a way though) so I wanted to suggest a possible scenario... what if they were introduced to the world only when a few of the triops species get big enough to support / aid in the growth of a few breeding populations (an established population). Thinking about it I guess you could say that each species was probably also introduced into the world only when the other species that they depend upon were already established on said planet.

@@ghidorahlightning7693 1. He mentioned at least one species from each lineage (turtles, triops, and butterflies) that predated on turtles 3. He mentioned that there weren’t any continental plates. It’s all just one big plate. Not sure what that causes but that’s how it is 5. I believe that was from magma lighting up a massive coal vein under Russia, so they’ve got some time before that becomes a risk Also, I find it funny that everyone thought you had accidentally set up eternal hypercanes because of British slang!

(I already posted this comment, but I think it would get swallowed up by the ocean of other comments and I'm really curious) I have a question, what type of orchid was introduced? Because some types of orchid trees already grow up to 40 feet, and other types are far smaller. I know you mentioned that root systems came above ground in aerial root structures, so I'm curious if due to the overly stormy conditions with little cover that the orchid abandoned its typical structure in favor of directly gaining water from the air or if it was for a different reason. Also, I'm curious how this would affect leaf growth for photosynthesis, like if the aerial root structures take on the original purpose of the stem in addition to being a root, or if both root and stem structures changed, and if the change in root formation greatly affected leaf growth. Sorry if I'm rambling, I think this is a cool project and can't wait to see more about it!

It might be important depending on your timescales. If you don’t get mountain building, your hills are all gonna dissolve. I am honestly not at all sure what that environment would look like, but universal lowland swamps, might actually be pretty close. Given that your world was terraformed, it might be reasonable to assume it was a dead world, like Mars (which used to have plate tectonics, but cooled off too fast). It would also then be reasonable to assume your seeder civilization did something to start the world’s core back up, since that would be needed to have a magnetic feild (and thus not let the atmosphere get blown away by the sun). The plate boundaries waking up is going to cause a lot of exciting challenges for your turtles and triops!

Narration and speculative evolution is amazing. My only issue is with the boiling seas due to the extreme greenhouse effect. Water vapor is responsible for roughly 50% of the greenhouse gas effect on earth while only being 0.25% by mass. Near constant boiling of the oceans would very quickly lead to a runaway effect turning that world into venus. I think your planet nearly entirety covered with wetlands is entirely possible with a less extreme greenhouse gas effect and very efficient ocean currents dispersing the heat from the equator to the polls. I seriously loved your video and cant wait to watch more!

I love this. The only problem is the boiling seas. It would be hard to escape that without a runaway greenhouse effect. In future episodes, you can retcon this by saying it's not literally boiling, but just really hot. This provides a new biome for animals to radiate into. Turtles will be able to get super huge there as the higher the temperature, the larger reptiles can grow. Perhaps they become gigantothermic. As they migrate further north this could evolve into an early form of endothermy for them.

I love how evocative the neotinous caterpillars are. I imagine that instead of flying away to mate, the female caterpillars grow eggs in their body before death, then when a male caterpillar eventually comes around to "clean up" the carrion he fertilizes the eggs in the process.

It's amazing how, despite starting from an entire planet of Carboniferous Swamps, there's so much variety in the actual biomes. The Steam Belt in particular is a brilliant concept. Can't wait to see how this world evolves, especially once the oceanic crack widens and we get our first potential mountains.

Wow. Just wow. To quote Palpatine: “We will be watching your career with great interest.” Feedback, if you would like: Concept: Fantastic. Snapping turtles on a very well thought out planet. Unique ideas like boiling oceans have a ton of potential for creatures to evolve to survive in. Art: Perfect. No notes. Painted aesthetic, simple animation, and stylized icons for the evolutionary charts. Perfect. Narration: Solid delivery. Some cuts were obvious from the change in mic quality. Nothing some practice and editing can’t fix . Script: Very good writing, not overly simple or flowery. I personally would like more detail of the specific evolutionary changes that animals undergo, but that is personal taste. TL;DR: Incredible work! Please continue this series for as long as you have passion for it! Liked, Subscribed, Shared, and Commented on. Do you hear me algorithm gods!

man, i love how you approached the non turtle fauna! having crustaceans as the (current) dominant ocean fauna but being wholly outclassed as soon as they go inland to the swamps or the butterflies turning predatory! i also cant stress the excitement i have about the giant equatorial wall of boiling steam. it has so much potential for things to be further developed, much like the whole project. best of luck with it man, subbed with notifications!

Hmmmm a few thoughts on this- 1. The existence of the Steam Belt, due to extreme evaporation, would fuel endless hypercanes that would grind down down any exposed landmasses around the equator. Forget catagory 5 hurricanes, these storms qould have winds ranging from 300 to 500 km/h. Perhaps for the sake of the project, this 'stormbelt' wouldn't expand to encompass almost the entire planet, but the idea to seperate Northern and Southern landmasses would remain. 2. The cracks sound to me that they are nascent and expanding continental boundaries? If this is the case, the 'wetland hat' of Kappa wont last forever - eventually, true plates will form, tectonic activity hits a windfall of actvitit, and a new era of Kappa would begin. The Oceans would deepen, the small landmasses would begin to congregate and subsume and grow and wane. True mountains might rise, even forming barriers to the affromentioned stormbelt. Tectonic activity would have to be present on Kappa after all: without a way to seed the surface with new nutrients, everything would grow Stagnant, Co2 would be depleted, the biosphere would slowly poison itself.
