Glad that you mentioned the Honda Super Cub. In the US, the most common variants were the Trail 90 and the Passport. There is an Edsel in my neighborhood. The owner paid $25 to get a duplicate title, when the daughter of the original owner said that he could have it free. He spent "enough plus 10%" to restore it.

Pull off at any rest stop on the Interstate, any gas station or picnic ground in a '58 Edsel and there's probably an instant car show, unless you're all alone!

My uncle was a Ford dealer in Southern California and he gave me a ride in the Edsel when it first came out. It was the quietest car I had ever ridden in. At a stop light you could not tell if the car was running. He gave me a model of the Edsel and I still have it, 66 years later. It was a very loving “Pig Nose” car.

Wow, this was a great video covering a lot of material from the Volkswagon, Model T, Model A, Edsel Ford's history, a little on Ford aviation, and somehow bringing in the Honda Cub into the story. The Honda 50 Cub was the very first motorbike I ever rode at the age of 14; again, the Honda Cub I and other Marines played around on the base in Vietnam. Today, I live in Vietnam, and the Hondo Cub is very popular here since it can be ridden by kids aged 14 and up without a driver's license. Honda is the largest-selling motorbike brand in Vietnam. However, I ride a Yamaha, haha.

Hello, Brad. I'll answer your question first. That grill caught my 12yo eyes on billboards all around the central Florida area. I fell in love with it! And briefly, may I add this? Possibly Ford's refusal to buy the rights to the GERMAN COMPANY offering the world the VW, was based on his fear of being associated with ANYTHING German, knowing that very soon the WORLD was to find something out. That he/Ford Motor Company was responsible for millions of FMC dollars being given to Adolf Hitler, along with many personal automobiles, to specifically aid in murdering millions of children and their parents? I'm not a diplomatic person, Brad. I love your format. We cannot forget! I apologize for any harm.

The grill has always drawn my attention too. You may be right about Henry Ford II not wanting to promote something destined by Hitler. I would have a hard time with that as well. :)

No harm done at all. I appreciate your thoughts on that and I’m sure that certainly had a part in the decision process. My uncle still calls Volkswagens “those Hitler cars.” Hahaha

Regardless of the reasoning, Ford's refusal of the "gift" that they were offered was not a well thought out decision. If the Volkswagen hadn't worked out for Ford they could very easily have retooled the factory to greatly increase their worldwide footprint. It looks to me like plain old arrogance. Nothing could possibly be as good as a Ford, could it? As always, thanks to you and Mr. Harvey for a fascinating history lesson.

Overconfidence on Henry II's part. Americans didn't take to the VW in the 50's, but Europe, Mexico, Argentina, etc.really did.

It makes me wonder where Ford would be today had Henry Ford not been so domineering and let Edsel just "do his thing". During WWII, when Rolls-Royce was looking for a USA manufacturer to license and mass produce the Merlin engine, because demand was far outstripping Rolls-Royce's manufacturing ability, Henry Ford was approached, and as with the Volkswagen Beetle declined. The Packard Motor Car Company stepped in, and the Packard made Merlin's were famously used in PT boats and the P-51.

I've always been a "car girl", not really in buying them but more about the styles, history, and changes over time. I'm far from an expert tho. Just like to graze through info and pick up interesting facts. 🔹Fun facts: I had no idea that Ford even crossed paths with Volkswagen, ever. I liked learning the translation of "Volkswagen". I'd always wondered. Very practical.🙂 🔹This was a very cool history lesson! Those early Fords are magnificent classics. Thank you for your research for this story.🚘🛣️

My dad got me interested in old cars at an early age. I’ve owned several and enjoyed each one. I would love to own an old Model T. Maybe one day. I like the Edsel but I think it’s because of the stories surrounding its failure. I always like the underdog I suppose. :)

Hitler continued to take down payments on VW's from German citizens a couple years into the war. The people never got their cars as their payments had been channeled into buying tanks, uniforms, arms and munitions.

I remember print advertising in 1960s for Volkswagen. If I recall correctly, the point was in 1948 or 1949 the number of VW's sold in USA was a total 2.

I've never been a fan of Ford vehicles, not even the Mustang. I have heard of the Edsel failure but don't think I ever heard the reason for it - now, that was, um, interesting. As a side note, my parents bought 2 Volkswagen bugs in 1967, when I was 17. They were both red and I was embarrassed by them. I had a hard time learning to use the clutch and looked like I was playing leap frog. My dad's was a lemon so he bought a Dodge Dart but my mother loved her Bug so much. She even bought another one when the first one gave up and drove it for years.

Never heard that Volkswagon story before. Henry Ford II was brilliant at making bad choices, although he did approve the first Thunderbird and Falcon. Of all the 1958 model year American cars, the first Edsel didn't look that bad, compared to the pudgy Fords & Mercuries and the really overweight cars that Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Buick introduced for '58.
