First and foremost, a special thanks to Captain Darrell Walton and all the awesomeness he brings to the History Mystery Man channel. As far as we know, this will be his season finale as we both offer up some final thoughts on the MV Dali disaster. Thanks for all your support...racing season is next.

@@jamesstrickland631 I've witnessed it first hand. But the problem is in just about every industry too many people born in the U.S., Canada, probably any Western country don't want to work in general and especially in jobs like trucking and especially the younger people. When there is a shortage of workers the bar gets lowered.....incompetent, improperly trained, unprofessional, lazy, even substance abuse issues...it's all too common. I realize there are exceptions, but I see this all too often.

On April 4th, the 1000 foot Indiana Harbor bulk carrier left Duluth Harbor/Canal being assisted by two tugs. This was a VERY rare event. She was fully loaded with 60K tons of taconite pellets bound for Gary, Indiana. For several days no one could figure out why the tugs. Yesterday one of the tug captains said it was due to their backup generator being out. Once the vessel left the canal, the tugs weren't needed. But tugs were again needed as she went through the Soo Locks, and later when she docked at Gary. This told me they practiced caution! I wonder if prior to the Baltimore event if 2 tugs would have been needed in this situation. Don, I emailed you the video link showing the 1,000 footer using two tugs.

It almost seems as if someone flipped the power switches off then on then off and on again! Like Captain Darrell said, "how did the engine PLUS All the generators go out at the SAME TIME!?" Just feels wrong. Look at how much damage just one ship has done. Very reminiscent of a few stray airplanes that caught us with our pants down. I pray it really was an accident, but it just seems a little off. I love the videos, and you guys are just THE BEST!!!

The dropping of the anchor was a wing and prayer that the Chesapeake Bay Pilot who ordered it to be deployed had hoped would catch on something and turn the MV Dali away from the FSK bridge. That said I have questions that to date I have not heard of found answers too. The first has to do with the MGO that the Main Engine, Main Engine Auxiliary Generators (ie the gen-sets that run the electric Blowers, engine oil and coolant pumps, as well as providing power to the hydraulic pumps that operate the rudder, and provide power for the reefer Conex boxes, house lights etc. Question 1 is do ships of this size use day tanks for fuel? Question 2 Do ships have Fuel “Polishing” Centrifuge(s) to polish/filter the MGO? Question 3 Do ships of this size have hot swappable fuel filters so that if an obstruction occurs the standby filters can be switched to quickly and easily. Question 4 Do ships have fuel flow sensors placed before and after the fuel filters to check for obstructed fuel filters? Question 5 Do ships engineers task samples of the fuel in the ships different tanks to check for water, algae, dirt etc and if so what would be an appropriate schedule to check the fuel in the tanks? Question 6 Workers at the port of Baltimore have reported that the Dali was having some sort of an electrical system problem and that every time they tried to get the ships generators to take the load after unloading and loading of Conex boxes that circuit breaker would pop and sometimes knock the generator offline. It was so bad that workers at the port have told reporters etc that the ship was using shore power. My question is who checks or certifies the problem has been resolved and systems are working properly. Lastly the ship took on a total of 400,000 gallons of at least two different types one being MGO and the other was what heavy fuel the ship burns past the 200 mile environmental zone. Answers to these questions would greatly be appreciated and thanks in advance for any replies given to my questions

Thank you guys! I enjoyed hearing your insights on this disaster. It seems regardless of the cause, someone wasn't doing their job or jobs properly. Whether it was in terms of security, maintenance or following procedure. And who knows if the true cause or causes will ever be completely known or especially revealed. Something seems fishy regardless. And a podcast would be great. I do really enjoy the visuals of these videos, but I like the listening flexibility of a podcast. Sometimes I watch the videos on my phone, but to really appreciate them I usually watch on my pc. A podcast I can listen to when I'm driving or on my lunch in my car.

As always, a great video! Since you mentioned aviation and as a former airline pilot, I’ll chime in again. There was, within my profession, a certain lack of confidence in the competency of crews working for some airlines of some less developed nations. It was often apparent that something was missing in the training, experience, qualifications, et al among these crews and this was sometimes alluded to in examination of accidents in CRM (crew resource management) training. I haven’t any idea whether any such contributed to this accident but I am a bit surprised that your conversation did not mention as a general concern the registry of vessels in under a “Flag of Convenience” and the problems that doing so inevitably creates when complying (or not) with safety standards and the quality of personnel. Thanks again for another informative video!

@@HistoryMysteryManthe Flag of Convenience is mentioned sometimes in seafaring chat threads since about 2012 or maybe a few years after that. It's for tax and insurance purposes, or at least that's how it started. I wouldn't say that's wrong as far as managing business prudently. But you know the tendency of mankind to start thinking that unethical ideas look good if they save pennies. Edit to add that I don't know much about it myself. These are just some things I've read in the chat threads.

I noticed the WWII History book on the shelf behind Captain Walton. I too am a very big WWII history buff. My Grand Father Willis G Gilbert was General Eisenhower's transportation officer during WWII. We do need to do a lot of work with our transportation infrastructure. What we have now including the transportation Secretary is a joke. I am shocked we do not have tug boats where these bridges without proper dolphins to protect columns to support these massive bridges.

I would love to listen to a podcast of you two! I've only got so much time to take care of household chores, and can't be using that time to sit and look at videos. So I've been listening to a lot of podcasts lately. It makes the time pass more quickly as I do the boring things that have to get done. My podcast player of choice is Spotify, mainly because it's already installed and I don't have the time to go off in search of another one, and then do all the sign up stuff. But every podcast I listen to announces that they're available on all the platforms. I don't know how much trouble it is for the creator to maintain all that. It doesn't matter to me if you do it weekly, every other week, or monthly, but I truly would enjoy it.

@HMM & Caot. Darrell, I've been following you all for a while now & another channel, especially on what happened in Baltimore. The other channel is called what's going on in shipping. He has been talking on the Dalli, and he says the black smoke is an attempt to fire the main generators back up.... idk there was something wrong with this ship as the emergency generator didn't kick in on time. From my understanding is no one has to throw a switch or anything. it's an automatic system. So yeah, the chief engineer is definitely going to swing for this mishap. They are blaming fuel they got overe here & I've heard that there have been ALOT of issues on these big freighters having issues with Fuel they get here. If that's the case than how come these big cruise ships aren't having issues with these same issues that these freighters are with fuel from the US? DIFFRENT type of diesel fuel? I don't know. You're BOTH more experienced to answer that than I am. Captain Darrell sir HMM gentlemen I have THROUGHLY ENJOYED listening to you all & your takes on the Fitz, & other ship wrecks around the great lakes. Why didn’t the crew aim for the middle of the bridge? 1600’ between the cement pillars. Ship is 200’ in width. That’s 700 feet on either side. Airplanes aim for the middle of the runway.
