Hi, in this video I look at a television which is not responding to the remote control. The previous owner bought another remote control thinking the issue was with the remote, but unfortunately it isn't. Can it be fixed and work again. Let's find out.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

The newer Chinese component testers have remote reader where you point the remote at the sensor and it tells you the manufacturer code and code of the button being pressed. Handy when checking if a remote is working, as I have seen examples where the LED lights but it's not transmitting anything sensible.

You should be proud of that repair, that feeling of fixing something you had no real knowledge of previously is hard to beat. Plus, you are providing a great service to other people that are trying to repair similar devices in the future. I know you sometimes give the disclaimer that people shouldn't copy you, and in the early days I would have agreed with you, but now you have become a skilled repairer across a broad range of items. There is nothing more valuable than practical experience, and because of the amount and breadth of your repairs done through your channel, your experience now shows. Keeping items out of landfill is vital and will only become more and more important in the future.

That’s amazing Vince I wish I knew electronics like you, I’ve fixed loads over the years & have done tons of soldering in a recording studio & studied a bit so understand basic components, but mostly it’s trial & error, recently fixed my boiler motherboard by replacing the capacitors with higher temperature versions 1 by 1 until it worked, as a hair dryer would make it work again for a short while but I had no way of working out which cap it was. It felt amazing when I found it..I think this fix would’ve been beyond me, weirdly I have a bedroom TV with exactly the same problem I doubt it’ll be water damage though :) but now feel like I’ve picked up a few tips to see if I can trace the problem after watching this, so thanks again for the amazing video..

Viewing the IR on a phone only works with some phones, it doesn't work on my iPhone unfortunately, it is a very nice trick to check a remote quickly, I have to use a Android tablet or my security cameras to check IR emitters on light curtains, although I also have an optical tester which tells me a power output too, I use that for final testing on IR light curtains to check output power.

Different manufacturers do use different coding between their products. Some manufacturers also allow a different code to be set on the unit and the remote so they don't clash - e.g. You can turn your Panasonic TV off without turning the Panasonic DVD player off with the same remote. Universal remotes have a programming sequence where they step through each code set until one tuns the unit on/off or a long list of codes you select in the remote setup.

5:20 Besides rust, that's also one way to fix battery damage on a board. You can start with an initial cleaning with IPA. You smear liquid flux on a damaged area and heat it up with hot air station or just a heat gun. When hot enough, the flux will suck out the impurities from the affected area and, as a result, turn darker. Remove the flux with IPA and repeat the procedure, if needed. Would love to see you try on your next battery damage repair ;).
@rolls_8798
@rolls_8798 11 ай бұрын
the flux turns darker regardless of impurities, it is the flux itself starting to burn a little. this is a lot more obvious and happens sooner with lower quality or unrefined rosin flux. still, the acidic property of the flux might help with cleaning the oxidation
@Omega_Mark
@Omega_Mark 11 ай бұрын
@@rolls_8798 Where there is the alkaline damage, the flux will turn dark much faster. You don't want to super heat it. Of course you want to use some decent quality flux for repairs instead of some cheapo stuff.

There is no standard list of different signals, probably, and so in my case, my TVs Power signal, is the same as my sound bars Volume Up (or down) buttons signal.. so every time i try to change volume of the sound bar, the TV turns off :D

7:10 that connector would have been very easy to de-pin. Lift the little tabs and pull the wires out. 20:25 yes, most brands work across their own brand but generally they're all different so as to not cause interference. All IR receivers receive *all* signals, but ignore/discard signals they weren't programmed to receive/process. You run into these problems with universal remotes (Logitech Harmony, for example) whereby you have to program delays in IR transmission so as to not overwhelm one device with erroneous signals.
@gilles111
@gilles111 11 ай бұрын
As far as I know, most brands of tvs, audio/hifi, etc. set their IR receiver to a specific range of bandwidth to pick up. That's why you have to set an universal remote control to a specific channel when you want to pair it with your tv. And that's also how they all make sure the remote of the tv isn't interfering with your radio. The receiver you used to replace the faulty one is from a IR-repeater, those are made to pick up any signal and transport to a location where you put the other end of the device and send the given IR signal from there (I've one in use too to get the signal for the hifi amplifier to the amplifier from a seat where I can't reach the IR sensor of the amplifier itself). Those transmitters are on a very wide band because they need to be able to pick up any remote signal you want. Might be very well possible to use whatever remote control you have to control the tv (maybe not all functions will work as well as with the original RC but I guess they still will).

Those remotes don't only send info on which button is pressed, but also the device-type. So, other devices don't react. The signal is usually modulated with a 40KHz block wave and the PLL in the receiver detects that (low=40KHz detected) so there is no inference from the sun and such.

you have a DVM that goes over 10M. The codes are often 3 - 4 bytes , repeats and inverted bytes on a 28KHz? carrier, , Sony has alot of protocol code sets. Theres an arduino library to capture and repeat. If the remote and reciever are on the same protocol but not on the same carrier they might work close up but not at a distance. Theres great really cheap usb scopes out there. But how many fixes would require its use. Well done .

The IR receivers are transistors that use light to turn on and off. Many TV's use different "codes" for different buttons but often a single manufacture will use the same codes for many models but they occasionally change it over time. There are websites with the info for each make and model.

It might have been a good idea to eliminate the connectors and solder the wires directly to the board. They don't really provide an advantage to the owner in this application, and they will corrode in their environment, causing the same issue to occur again.
