I took care of a little old lady and she had 2 small freezers. I asked her why she needed 2 and why she kept wadded up newspaper inside. She told me that she prepares and if you loose power the paper helps to hold the cold if you don't have power for a while. Love all of your info and suggestions ❤ thank you

a full freezer uses less energy (especially fill nooks with bottles if water ) though an empty fridge uses less energy - I Europe we have to really be super careful because high energy prices quadrupled in a year

@@fullofhope2222 I freeze drinking bottles of water flattened a bit for cold compresses in the kitchen fridge and usually have 2 semi flattened 2liter bottles in my stand up freezer for cooler purposes and to fill spaces. They also come in handy when I get meat on sale , haven't any room in the fridge and plan to process it the next day. 😉

Hey Southern Wife! I’d like to share a few things I have found when storing food. 1. I keep 1-2 bags of frozen veggies in my freezer. I dehydrate the rest. Saves room in the freezer for more important things such as ice cream and meat. Plus if there’s a power outage I won’t be stuck trying to figure out how to eat pounds and pounds of veggies in 3 days. Dehydrating from frozen saves a ton of time! They can dehydrate from frozen or thawed, no blanching necessary because of the flash freezing process! 2. Watch those powdery products! I just recently lost 25lbs of flour to bugs along with 2 bags of pancake mix. Also compromised we’re some gravy mixes and breakfast powders. Everything stored in jars was fine, stuff left in bags not so much. 3. Two years in all of my cereal and crackers went stale. These items can also be stored in jars up to 2 years hand sealed and indefinitely when vacuum sealed, this also includes cookies too! I hope these tips help!

This might sound a little "yucky" but you can save your flour after a bug infestation. We understand that the bugs are not toxic, so, put the flour in the freezer for several days, and while it is still frozen sift the critters out and give them to your chickens. (I microwave them to make sure they're dead.) A couple of things to remember is that if you actually knew how much bug stuff is actually in the commercial foods you eat, you probable would get a little squeemish. You could then oven can the flour at 190F for an hour or so. As to the mixes, they have stuff like baking powder in them, so I don't know how well they would survive such treatment. But since we're still living in a time of relative abundance, tossing out the flour and replacing it with fresh is a good option. If things were difficult, this trick would probably save some very needed calories.

Same. We were doing the Dave Ramsey and not eating out and staying home so when the pandemic hit we were like okay that’s what we are doing. We both kept working (well husband stayed home for 5 months building deer blinds for the new place we bought). But really didn’t even notice the pandemic except I am a nurse and work was crazy. Didn’t start prepping until last summer but I’ve been full speed a head for that year. We are stocked! ❤

My aunt pointed to the other day that I should buy my pasta in plastic instead of the boxes because any little insect can crawl inside and because it will stay fresh for longer in the bag. 😩 so now she has me looking inside my box of pasta before I use them 😂 definitely will consider her opinion. Great job on stocking up because in reality we just never know before Covid I was already a little crazy about making sure I had enough food/ household items for my family of 8 now I’m even more on top of stuff. Stay Bless ❤

To use an old saying of not putting all of your eggs in the same basket, I think this would apply to prepper/long-term pantries/storage etc. I have my supplies spread out throughout the house and areas. If there's a tornado, hurricane, equipment failure, etc, it won't affect all areas unless the entire house is destroyed. This way, there will be supplies that will most likely survive that you can use. I think with you having two+freezers, if one goes put, you'll have the others.

I wanted to share with you one of the ways I have organized and saved space for canned goods. Find some of the white coated three tier "spices' shelves that are wide enough for cans. You can fit them together by linking the legs and can stack them two tall in a taller cupboard it's easy to see what you've stored, and your able to use the space underneath for thinner boxes ( pasta, jello, Rice ECT ) I always mark my best by dates on the front of the label, and whatever it is on the top of the can, with bb date, in case I store them on the side or in a bin on the floor. Easy to find, and rotate them then. Hope this is helpful to someone! Thanks for sharing what you do 💕

A great place to store water or other items in small spaces or apts is underneath your beds. Don't forget a foodsaver vacuum sealer is a terrific prep for flour and sugars that fit into an under bed bin. Make sure you seal them in a xl lunch bag first then the vacuum sealer bag. It keeps small particles out of the vaccum system in the machine

Prepping doesn’t always mean a grid down scenario although that is definitely a consideration. Some times it means a spouse loses a job, and the food budget decreases. Sometimes it means you are so sick you cannot leave the house and it’s just nice to not have to go run errands if you have a fever or you are tending to a sick family member. I say all of that to say, having a stocked freezer is still a blessing even if you don’t have a generator because not every emergency means SHTF.

We have a generator but we live on a farm and water troughs/wells are powered by electric. Many don’t realize that you need to power up your geni once a month to keep it primed. I've just started watching your newer videos and and really love them. I watched this older one and have a suggestion for your deep freezers. I came across a video from Acre homestead called, "easiest way to organize a deep freezer.... " I think it changed my life haha. Basically I wish I would have known this 25 years ago. She used hard-sided shopping bags with handles and organized her freezer. . I now have all my chicken in one bag and all my beef in one bag etc... so I just lift the top bags up full of all the stuff to get to the bottom bags Anyway if you're interested check her video out it explains it a lot better.

We have been prepping since 2001 “officially”. I grew up in upstate NY and we always had lots of food stored because we could be snowed in for days and without power as well. It is a lifestyle that we enjoy. To those that say why do you have 2 freezer (we have 3)….if the power to go out for several days you can always can what you can on either your gas stove being lit manually or on an outside burner like a camp chef. Either way you would still have it to can as opposed to not having it at all.

Another good idea is dry ice. Throw a few blocks in your freezer. If you have a power outage the dry ice will keep your goods cold and some still frozen. You've done a great job and everything looks so organized and attractive too. Well done on all the home canned goods. It does look like you've succeeded in collecting at least 9 months to a year's worth of food for 3 people I have water bath and pressure canners and now need to learn how to use them. Also need to expand my pantry. You could always work on canning the meats in your 2 spare freezers while you're saving for a generator. They've gone up in price a lot for sure but are very important insurance to have considering the state of the grid and greater possibility of it being attacked these days. I love your rotational system. I want to use a spare bedroom in the same way for rotational foods, then have long-term buckets in another place as well. We also cut out food dyes for our kids years ago when they were little. One got super hyper adhd with red dye and another one gets nausea & vomiting with yellow dye. In addition, two of us don't digest gluten well, so that has been a challenge; it's not as easy to find cheap natural & organic without making it yourself.

I had a check done on the mesh plastic in the craft stores it is safe for food but it takes the cost of buying what goes to a dehydrator extremely cheap. I bought and cut the mesh plastic sheets for .99 cent's each I did finely chopped strawberries, chopped apples, pears, what ever you need I used these for cookies and oatmeal, there great for thin cut tomatoes they just peel right off. I have 91 half gallon of dehydrated food's we use and doing powder food's. Bless you all for taking care of your family.. starving is hell.

I wish I could show my stock up on dehydrated food's. I grew so much and help of family I also found my mass of bulk at the Chef's store. This store is we're restaurant buy bulk. No EBT but I have dehydrated a hundred pounds of potatoes and there in 5 gallons bucket's, I buy 40 pound's of onion's, 80 pound's carrots you get the point when I see that on buying bulk I paid $.99 cents for five pounds. This store made us drop Costco and there's no membership fee wow . We also tryed a freeze dry and it's a joke. Storage can get damp trashing product and it turns food in to air it takes up to much room to store. If people find that to be a liking ok but I'll stay with the way our ancestors done it. So to run my dehydrator cost me for a 22 hour 10 cent's on power . My husband was freaked when I had two going tell he found what the power was he asked if I need another who knows I can burn them out running none stop haha 😂 so please remember you will need mesh plastic to dehydrate food's ok. I also love my grandkids puffer over candy. Watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberry, please just buy banana chips there cheaper then your cost and time.

If I had to pick one kitchen appliance, it would be my Food Saver. Not only is it great for vacuum sealing and saving food in the freezer, but also in and out of the fridge. Not only food. I have sealed important documents, clothing, matches and candles and cash, just to name a few things. There are videos on You Tube showing different ways to use it.The bags are reusable if you use cheap zip lock bags to flash freeze the food before vacuum sealing, cutting down on their cost. I was the same way about my pressure canner. It sat in the box for FIVE years before I took the plunge after watching videos on You Tube about canning meat. So, DO IT!

Yes, a generator is a good idea. Hadnt thought of that. One of those things where you hope you never need to use it, but are glad you have it when you do need it. Just like all the food. Maybe a company will send you one to review, that would be awesome!

Making a prepper pantry for the last 2 years. It has grown. It is a mess. Three different area. Just started making a specific room for my "In Home Grocery Store". Shelves are in and assembled. Braced and ready to fill. You are so much better at this than I am. I do keep rice, beans, flour, sugar and oats in the Low's Buckets. Got the idea from you I believe.

Proud of your supplies n becoming more self sufficient. I would need to be educated more on generators. I got mine about 5 years ago, but had to have my son come n start it. I am disabled n need a push start generator, prefer Solar/ propane. However, my son has them and 2 ..5 gal gas cans n he is storing for me n will return as needed. My biggest concern was sump pump, when it's wet it works overtime, and that is when power goes out. Thank goodness for add on battery back up. Or I would be a mess with worry.

You are doing great!! Please try really hard to save for a small generator. It doesn't need to be a whole house generator, just big enough to supply power to your freezers, for an hour or so a day, to keep them cold. Just don't open them often.

Making sure you have some water on hand for your dehydrated foods is good idea, that is not what you have stored as your drinking water. Extra food in the house has saved us when we have had job layoffs and bigger unplanned bills. Buying extras on sale is the best way. Buying dried fruits and nuts (provided there is no allergies) are great snacks that have no dyes, bagging them up yourself after buying them in bulk makes them easy to grab. I love freeze-dried fruit but it is so expensive to eat frequently, I guess it will be a treat when we open up a can of freeze-dried strawberries!😊 Keeping everything organized and a running inventory list can be a full time job, but it is always satisfying when you feel you have a better handle of what you have.

Canned 96 Qts of chicken & broth. Next is beef & pork. We’re moving & can’t move frozen foos thus processing. Just didn’t know I had that much fowl. Geez, the cost diff from pkgs a year ago to now! Shocking. Glad I got this done & will be very glad when we use it. We will be tired after house hunting…

Darlin’ you have the opportunity to do so much more with the space you have available. You need to barter some skills for someone to build permanent shelves in the basement ,use the portable shelves in your pantry room upstairs. You will see such a difference. It is suggest one year or more, 3 meals a day to get through a crisis, being economical, political upheaval, sickness, job loss weather events such as tornado. My advice is pressure can and bath can away. Find recipes for sauces, meatballs, chicken beef and clean out that freezer. An electrical grid is devastation in food loss. Do it now and get it on the shelf. I only keep 1 large freezer for that reason. Try and beef up long term items. A dehydrator and vacuum sealer are my best friends. Garden produce. I grow my own herbs and medicinal herbs. I have an area for tea. I make my own teas, chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, ect. I have several indoor tea plants that make black tea to combine with the others. I buy a lot of local honey. Honey never goes bad. I buy from the local farm market for produce I don’t grow or have difficulty growing and get lots of tips from the growers for a better harvest. So many things I would like to share with you to help you on your journey to self sufficienc❤️

I have 5 cats and one mouse. The mouse comes out in the kitchen when I'm cooking and ask me what's for dinner. I have seen him jump over the glue papers he's a sneaky thing. I had my dry gravy mixes in my upper cabinets, he ate them, apparently he liked the brown gravy mix better but, of course he had to try everyone. He ate through my box of instant mashed potatoes. He ate my seasoning packets I keep in the drawer, he favors papa johns. I have set out traps for him to no avail. Everything is all cleaned up and bleached down. Now, everything is being kept in those plastic shoe container's in my cabinets. I live in an older home so there is no way to plug all the holes that mice can come in. I'm not done trying to catch him, but my guess is he is smarter than my well fed cats.

I enjoyed your video. I take a sharpie and put the year number sample 23 on all my cans and boxes to help with rotation. As someone said before we too in a medical shut down. Testing our preps on starching our money to pay my hubby Dr. bills while he is going thru cancer treatments. Like them discovered we discovered we don't eat much processed foods. Basically cook from starch.

Yep summers are hard here for me which means I stock up for those few months with low income. When I moved into my apartment I never thought about getting myself a cubic freezer. Now I’m wishing I had one. When meat was cheap I could totally have it when I need it.

We have. Generator, it’s a Big one and very quiet. We use it with our RV if we go camping and have no power. We have 2 big stand up freezers. They’re full. My husband asked me other day what if our power goes out. And we loose all that stuff. I told him we won’t. If it does. I’ll just can the stuff and meats. I love canning stuff. We love canned hamburger meat and canned 🐥. And all the vegetables I’ve canned. Keep it up. Love your videos. ❤😊

We are in same situation as you as far as not having a generator. I want to get one, my husband needs to be convinced so I am working on him. In meantime I have 2 upright freezers that are full & we have had long time. They are manual defrost which is a pain the older I get so hope to replace with automatic defrost. I think you are doin a great job on becoming more self sufficient but learning how to make your own food like you are doing with your bread items & all your canning I am impressed !

I’d love to learn how to can one of these days. When I’ve seen Brooke’s videos she makes it so easy. I’d like to get a freezer. I’m bummed that I missed out on last month Sam’s club cubic freezer. The one that’s on sale this next month is a bit too big for me a 7 cubic freezer. I feel a 5 cubic freeze would suit me just fine for my family size.

A years worth of food and items for all other aspects of one's life is the very minimum all of us should have on hand if we are wise. It boggles the mind to know that many comparatively wealthy folk have only enough food at home to last a couple of days, three at the most, not even a weeks worth of food. The common thread seems to be that either they don't know how to cook, or don't want their cash tied up in food. Yet it is by far the very best hedge against inflation and shortages, creates security and means one never has to depend upon others. Emergencies such as illness, injuries and loss of income, have little impact when one is prepared. It also prevents impulse shopping and unnecessary visits to the store, which increases petrol costs. Buying only foods one uses and when they are at rock bottom prices is the way to go. Have three pantries, one one is using now, one to refill the first and a third of foods that last indefinately, or forever.

I think people should learn to live without a refrigerator/freezer. Store canned goods and dehydrated. Store in glass canning jars (vacuum sealed of course with a moisture packet for dry goods). This keeps pests away and preserves it for a couple years plus. Power outages are a thing, not to mention what are you going to do if there's a grid down event? All that stuff in your freezer/refrigerator is going to go bad before you can eat it all. I have lived without a refrigerator for years and I don't miss it at all. But to each his/her own.

Living in south Africa we are so lucky Defy (manufacturers), just released a solar fridge and deep freezer. Seeing that we have outages every day. You can't buy meat in bulk for fear of it going rotten.
