II come from a rural background and preparing like this is natural for me. As time progressed to vacuum packing, freeze drying and more efficient dehydrating. I grow my own teas, herbs , medicinal garden, tinctures, salves , poltices, It’s important to me to keep and teach the old ways . It was survival and self sufficiency.

Awesome! We are in northern Wisconsin. Do you just sell it locally to you? I haven't looked much into the process other than I know people who have made it on accident when they boiled their sap too long.😅

I'm not sure where you live, but if earthquakes are a possibility in your area, you should consider protecting your jars from falling off the shelves. One idea is to use bungee cords across the front and sides of the shelves. Another idea is to have the jars sitting in low profile boxes.
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse Жыл бұрын
That is a very good point! Thankfully, we do not have a risk of earthquakes here, but in WA that was definitely something to prepare for.

If you got a vacuum sealer, you can seal raw or cooked. They stack nicely in the freezer. Get wild and crazy and you can vacuum seal whole meals of cooked food, lay flat in your bag and stack them in the freezer. Just like tv dinners only better!

Its good to see younger people learning our old ways of life. I suppose for this day and time you younger newbies would think having a years supply of food is something new, but not for us old timers who were raised by the old ways on farms. It’s just a natural way of life. We spend all spring, summer and fall raising, growing, preserving and making everything possible ourselves. In fact for the last 40+ years we raise, grow, preserve 2 years worth 1 year of canned 1 year dehydrated for longer term storage. This includes fruits, berries, grapes from our orchards. We also do medicinal tinctures, ointments, poultices and dried medicinals, cold processed soaps, etc.

Although I am single now I still stock up and am trying to go as long as I can between grocery trips especially now with all the germs being spread around in the winter it's best to stay home, eat what I have and enjoy winter with my 5 dogs reading books and continuing to learn to get back to the basics of not being so dependent on the stores. I live in the city so a lot of things I can't do that you can do in the country or more complicated than I want like raising chickens. We all do the best we can with the resources we have available. A few takeaways and questions from your video…First of all your daughter in adorable and has a very infectious smile!! So sweet!! Regarding food storage, it looks like you have way more than a years supply of food, seeing how you are already in February. Especially the home canned goods. How do you best rotate your stock? How long can most of the nuts, seeds and dry fruits last before you use them up or they spoil. Do you dehydrate or dry freeze your own things too? Do you take into account items that expire or go bad? Also I was taught from both Ball Canning and the National Center for Home Food Preservation it’s not safe to can diced tomatoes due to density issue. (Only whole, quartered or crushed) What methods do you follow when canning? I’m only storing items for two, yet I do keep extra for sharing with neighbors/friends/family in case there’s an emergency. Great video and thank you for sharing!! Many blessings to you and your family.❤

Thank you! Most everything is rotated by or around the 1 year mark. We don’t restock until November so really there are quite a few months left after this video. I do dehydrate my own things, but don’t freeze dry. If something is close to going bad, we use it up. I’ve always canned diced tomatoes. This was based on an “approved” recipe at the time, but those are always changing. I’m not worried about it. 😉

This was so amazing to see. Completely inspired 🥰 May I ask, where is the toilet paper from? We’re looking for an Organic brand. Thanks in advance.

Love the video and you have a beautiful set up! Can you please recommend how you go about finding local sources for canning or sourcing your stock ups? I know fruit can be easier to find with the upicks...but how did you find a local source for sweet corn? Also, is azure shipping directly now?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse Жыл бұрын
We are pretty lucky to live in a very agricultural community. Locally grown food is everywhere here! I recommend going to localharvest.org and searching there for farms, CSAs and farmer's markets near you. Azure does ship directly, but shipping is more expensive that way, especially for heavier items.

Great video and very informative. I do have a question though. When canning your tomatoes, how long in the jars would you say they last?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse Жыл бұрын
I'd easily eat them 2 years after canning without thinking twice. I'd eat them 3 years later if our tomato crop was bad and I couldn't replenish my stash. They are not ever going to go "bad" per se, as long as the jar stays sealed. The only difference over time is that they lose flavor, color, and nutritional value. Also, these days jar lids only claim to last a few years before the seals start to fail, so make sure they are still sealed before opening.

Crazy enough your azure standard Hall breaks down to about $217 and that's even including your shipping cost so really for one year that's not bad in today's economy especially with the quality of product's you got.

Yes! Of course we had other food expenses as well that were not from Azure, but overall it was a very good price for all we got!

I would love to have a prep storage but I just don't have any room or the conditions to store it in. I only have a 5-shelf unit that sits in a garage and it can get very hot in there during the summer months....I do my best I suppose
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse

You can still have food storage! We used to live in a tiny mobile home with no storage at all. I stored my canned food up on top of the cabinets where it got pretty hot in the summer. I made shelves above our fridge. I got creative. Don't worry about the heat. No, it's not ideal, but canned food doesn't go bad in heat, it just loses its color and texture quicker.

A few things. 1. Your daughter is adorable! 2. That peanut butter sounds like magic. 3. What is the cost of your membership and 4. Would you be selling the menus separately?

Thank you!! Membership will open again mid-March and it is $18/mo. It is more than just info thrown at you, but a step-by-step course. The link for the waitlist is in the description. But, yes! I will be adding them to my store as separate options soon. Hop on my email list or that waitlist to get notified.

Have you ever thought about dehydrating on your own it might save quite a bit of money
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse Жыл бұрын
Oh we do dehydrate a ton, but for things that we don’t grow ourselves it makes more sense for me to use what I get for more expensive products like pie filling or sliced and canned. Some years we do more dehydrating than others. It depends on the price of produce locally or what we are able to grow.
