We tried this once and the trick (for us) to get more even propane distribution was to split the supply line with a T and feed the spiral coil from both ends. That seemed to keep the pressure more even and gave a better distributed flame.
@jttech44

You need the whole line to hold pressure for this to work, and basically, for the amount of fire they want, the holes they drilled were way too big. That said, the result was still super cool.

Also, I would have loved to see you put the pipe inlet on the bottom, so that when you put it on a stand you could hide both the connection and the propane tank.

From the polar equations of the trisectrices as applied with the exponential part of Doyle's constant to give an "invisible touch", just a slight "bump" in order to view the elliptical math with a lens. The conchoid of Nicomedes: gravitational fields affect the corner/cusp singularities, the cosine of theta represents how this laterally drives the central bulge to form a tornado of fluidic motion that occasionally forms gaps and can spin off budded primordial black holes. The Maclaurin trisectrix: the sine of 3 times theta represents the effects of the paired corner/cusp singularities forcing a rotation in the central bulge. The doubling signifies the top and bottom halves of the bulge. The Tschirnhausen cubic: the ripples of energy from the paired corner/cusp singularities combine at the inflected areas to fatten the particle. The trisectrix limaçon: the cosine of theta represents the line between the leading and trailing points of the rotating ring/cylinder/horn singularity being united with the rest of the body, such as a photon or electron, and the 1 squared divisor represents how gravity elongates the singularity, through the "magic" of split-complex numbers and how the leading and trailing rotating points maintain an elliptical orbit around each other. The equilateral trefoil: a supernova event. A high metallicity collapsing star briefly forms dark matter. The dark matter drives the explosion and gets quickly broken up. The cosine of 3 times theta represents how the dark matter breaks up at the inflected areas. The regular trifolium: the cosine of 3 times theta represents how a feeding or forming black hole singularity wobbles. The Ceva trisectrix: the 1 + 2 times the cosine of 2 times theta represents the top and bottom halves of the budding bulge of Big Bang era dark matter. The sine of 3 times theta over the sine of theta represents how ripples of energy from alternating corner/cusp singularities unite at the inflected areas to form a bulged disk shape from the inflection points onward toward the center. The Delanges trisectrix: the cosine of theta halved. Reminiscent of the natural logarithm of the imaginary number, forces are being released perpendicularly, but causing rotation instead of hindering it. The Dürer folium: whether in a proton or neutron, the two ring/cylinder/horn elliptical singularities cannot stably form obtuse associations. The hyperbola of eccentricity 2: gravity is produced, creating an accretion disk and causing impacts and a consumption of the less massive particle or body.

Made one of these years ago. Used fine pea gravel and bonded seep hose. LPG gas is heavier than air so stays in the gravel voids and at 100% saturation is inflammable at normal temps. The air/fuel boundary needs to be kept constant so you need a gravel as opposed to sand that "bubbles" or vents randomly. As a point burns it draws more gas to that point so a fine adjustment of the regulator valve provides quite remarkable fidelity. When running I could draw with my finger in the gravel and have the flame chasing behind. Of course a buddy tried after I said "keep your finger moving promptly", obviously didn't understand promptly or take note of watching me do it, he learnt quicker thereafter.

Xyla- Don' t worry about the flaring error. We all make mistakes. The other day I was changing the oil in my car. I took out the drain plug and my phone rang. I talked on the phone for 15 mins. Then, I preceded to add 5 quarts of oil- with the drain plug removed.

Do this w/ a LOT less tubing and it comes out a lot more even and definitely use mesh over the holes or flip it over to prevent the tubes from filling up w/ super fine sand.... That ruins the effect because it increases pressure in the system and it makes "hot spots", basically areas that have more gas than others. 🔥😍👍❤️

Totally relatable flaring before putting fitting on, if you ever do again, could put the fitting on the other end of tube and just run it the entire length of the tube to the other end. Or just cut the end of and do again. 😊

I 💖 this idea and I've done that more than once ( 2:37 ) lol... Adding that, it'll obviously be more complicated but I think it will work better if you use a Y fitting so the gas goes into both ends of the tubing, plus using coarser sand might help as well...

Xyla! Great fire tube! I've drilled several, for 'making movie magic & fire'. Smaller holes closer to the propane source would help the entire length get more even gas flow. It's a consideration of flow path cross sectional area, minus each hole as you move down to the end of the tube. Nothing extreme; 3-4 drill bit sizes is often sufficient. Increasing gas flow rate/pressure will help too, but then it might get too high. None the less, the jumping fire effect is really cool! Thank you!

Another change you can make is having the holes getting progressively larger the further you get from the gas supply in order to even out the pressure at the hole outlets and have it light all the way to the end, OR instead of one big loop you lower the overall length of each section by using a branching pattern so the pipe pressure is more consistent across the board Love the idea, making stuff on the fly is always satisfying

You can try feeding from both ends and put the sand on top of metal screen being held up with some metal legs so there is an open area under the screen, the type that goes on screen doors. That will allow the propane to fill the area under the sand at a low pressure and spread out over a larger area. We used to sit on a patio with a set up like that and it took very little gas and the fire danced all over the top pf the sand. jack

You will only get the blue flame if the propane is properly mixed with air before it is burned. So flipping it around the gas had more time to disperse through the sand and mix with the air in it, which gave you a more blue flame. Gas stoves uses convection since the heat draws up air through the bottom of the circles that produces the flames and gas grills also have air inlets under the burners or even a opening before it goes into the burner to draw in air with the preasure that comes from the propane tank. It's the same with lighters that have a blue flame, it will have air holes before the burner to draw in air through before it comes out and starts to burn. The non blue flames uses the same gas butane and it will not get in contact with air until it gets out of the burner and therefor have a more orange flame.

Huge tip if you ever need to make holes like this in pipe again, just use a file with a groved corner (like a triangular file or a plank file with ridged edges), generally one or two good slides across and you have a nice cat’s eye shaped slit hole, which also makes it less likely to have material fall into it and can be meshed over easily. Also, heat the pipe before trying to shape it (even a hot water bath can massively help the ease of shaping) it can be easier to notch the pipe when its straight, then make spacers and loop the pipe with spacers holding it snuggly in place (basically choose a length of wood as tall as the pipe, as wide as you want the spacing, router each side so it cups the pipe, then place them as you spiral inward

The combined diameter of your holes is greater than the infeed pipe diameter so the gas effect is reduced because of lack of pressure around the pipework. As y u are going through sand which dissipates the gas you could reduce the rings to 2 or 3 with smaller holes. Some various kinds of rock on top of the sand could add colour to the flame in a similar effect to fireworks.
