utterly Brilliant! my jaw is dropping. Put this in an arcade box and you won't know the difference. Remember subtle background animations like sand shifting ala Dune on your sand stage. It's those little touches that make games really stand out e.g. IK+ by Archer McClean was good at doing those things

Looking great. The base of the fire stream for each weapon appears artificially flat. Is it possible to have the base shape around front of ship a little?

Thanks, mate :) You are right, of course, that area is still WIP. I didn't finalize it yet because I wasn't sure if those weapon gfx are final. The reason for this "flatness" is that each player and all of its shots and its muzzle flash are composed out of just 2 hardware sprites (so 2x2 and the remainig 4 are used for all explosions). Now, for the shots and the muzzle flash the sprites are seperated, so we got 2 with 3 colors. But at the moment the player ship is to be drawn, those 2 sprites have to be combined so that they form 1 15-color sprite. That hard gap results from that transition. Fortunately it can be hidden by adding one extra sprite-definition for each player-ship animation, integrating the lower part of the muzzle-flash (which is effectively what you proposed). That way the fat-laser is instantly fixed. For the spread-shot some extra care must be taken because it by itself requires both sprites. But it can be fixed by careful positioning and maybe adding one extra special animation frame for it.
