So sweet to see laying down foundations for Doncaster, music would have helped and so nice to see no traffic on the road .

Proper cars! A Renault Dauphine at 5:45. At the time a rare foreign car on UK roads.

This stretch of the A1(M) predates The Beatles! As a regular traveller up this motorway - along with thousands of others - over the years it is amazing to see things how they used to be - and so much has changed! Well, I suppose its just like unearthing old Beatles footage! Any more from where this came from? MR. POP

Magnificent, still in place, should have been 3 lanes each way, made travelling that much less congested than on plain A roads and town centres.

The opening sequence is Wentbridge viaduct, not the Doncaster by-pass.

Fantastic piece of film - Thank you for sharing it. Did you film this (or your dad ? ! ) - what is the background to it - did you just live near-by, or were you working on it ? Please tell us a bit more if you can. Thanks again !

Interesting that at the end of the video there is a roundabout (Red House, j38), because there is not a roundabout there now and I was never aware there was ever one there. The other end of the motorway (at Blyth, j34) a roundabout was recently by passed webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20120810121037/www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/4455.aspx. See www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Redhouse_Interchange for a view of j38 today.

I always remember when we had family holidays in the North of England we had to use the A1 including this stretch of road featured here.I remember the roundabout at junction 34 (which we had to use to access this stretch of road) which was bypassed certainly by 2009/2010,the last time I had cause to travel on that road

According to Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A638_road#Doncaster_to_Wakefield) there was a roundabout there before 1979, although there is no citation. The name "Red House" derives from a coaching inn called Red House. see www.biffvernon.freeserve.co.uk/doncaster.htm.

Yes there was a large roundabout. I stood there many times in the seventies when hitchhiking both North and South on the A1. Traffic on the A1 queued at busy times. It was swept away when the over bridge for the A638 was constructed and the junction was remodelled
