You missed out Junction 4. It may look uninteresting but the road that the motorway crosses is Ermine Street, the Roman Road that goes from London to Lincoln and the on to York.

As a (reasonably) proud Scunthonian who legged it to the far end of the M62 at the first opportunity, I remember one of my favourite stories about the town was a review by a travel writer which consisted solely of something along the lines of: "I drove past Scunthorpe on the M180. It looked closed." Still holds true to this day. Also known as the Industrial Garden Town because of its decent amount of green space, Scunthorpe's motto is 'The heavens reflect our labours' in honour of the red glow that lights up the sky when they tip the steel on the steelworks. Also thanks to the steelworks, many Scunthonians' first experience of the world of work used to be a summer job shovelling slag, wahey. Nowadays the only slag heap you're likely to see up close can be found at Britannia Corner on a Friday night.

Only been to Scunthorpe once for a night out in the 80's, it was great. Didn't get to Britannia Corner but a cracking gig in a Pub I don't remember that had a wedding reception in the other bar. Best bit was when the bride in full get up walked into a punk gig out back to see a lad who had passed out and had his trousers round his ankles, didn't bat an eyelid, she kept drinking and smiling.

@@cyberleaderandy1 That's a bit disappointingly mundane to be honest. I was hoping it was one of those situations where a legacy work order to paint the road had never been cancelled and it was just getting done every couple of years without anyone questioning why. (I saw a story many years ago in Readers Digest's 'Humour In Uniform' in which an airman had been tasked to repaint an airfield's taxiway markings in anticipation of an imminent VIP visit. He accidentally knocked a paint pot over and, not having time or resources to clean it up, painted the spill into a neat white square running nearly edge-to-edge across the taxiway in the hope that it might look to the untrained like part of the official markings. Years later he visited the same airfield as a civilian. Not only was his square still there, it was newly repainted and had clearly received many a fresh coat over the years. Sometimes it's easier to just do and not ask.)

I learnt to fly at Sherburn in Elmet and one of our 'standard' journeys was to Humberside airport. First time I flew solo I got lost (sorry - temporarily unsure of location!) as I was expecting to be told to report over Brigg but they asked me to report over Caistor. Having no bloody clue where that was I ended up flying the length of the M180 then turned 'right' along the A1084 to get to Caistor. Air traffic control did have a few questions fro me when I landed!

Of course one reason for the M180 is access to Humberside Airport which I did not hear you mention. I had a job which required me to travel overseas reqularly and I live close to the A15 which runs north and connects to the M180. So I used Humberside Airport a lot to connect to Amsterdam and then on to wherever I was going to. The best part was that the small airport meant I could easily avoid long queues and even if I was going to say The USA, I could wave goodbye to my suitcase in Humberside and see it again thousands of miles away! Thanks for the video and Happy New Year John.

Should do a video about that unfinished cycle section into Brigg along the canel. Wish the land owner would just give consent already, Brigg to South Ferriby would be a lovely ride. However, that B road from Elsham to South Ferriby is already very very quiet and with some effort you can get up a hill and have some great views from the top of the Ancholme Valley.

Hi. Junction 5 for a long time had a different configuration. I used to live in Grimsby but had family in Scarborough. Before the construction of the Humber Bridge, this involved driving around the Humber via Boothferry Bridge if you didn't take the ferry. To start with this involved the A18 and the old swing bridges at Keedby and Boothferry. Then they built the M18 and M180. For a long time, the M180 stopped at junction 5 and you had to rejoin the old A18 to get to Grimsby. Throughout my childhood, we used to call it the 'motorway to nowhere' as there was a full motorway junction clearly designed to be continued but the road ran into an earth bank. Eventually, they pushed it through as the A180. Also, they added the link road to the Humber Bridge, and eventually also built a link road to Lincoln along the line of the old roman Ermine Street.

On checking just now, I see the Union Suspension Bridge over the River Tweed seems to have been the first (even if one end is in Scotland), having been built in 1820. The first part of the M180 to be built ,the Brigg Bypass, was in response to the June 74 Flixborough explosion,Brigg has some very narrow main through roads and all the petrol tankers leaving the Killingholme refineries for the the motorway system had to travel through Brigg,so that section was prioritised. The M180 Brigg Bypass was built quite quickly after Flixborough, and the rest of the M180 followed after.Yes ,you are correct about the M180/A180 junction at Elsham lane drop.It was thought that the M180 would continue to Grimsby as full 3 lane motorway ,but instead was built as a terribly noisy concrete dual carriageway.Parts of the A180 have been resurfaced with blacktop but a large part remains concrete surfaced, although there were plans to re-surface more but this seems to have been delayed,or abandoned. No idea how I missed this one but lots of stories of the M180 and Sandtoft over the years. Many memories of the M180 shifting Pugs and Citroens from Immingham docks to Sandtoft when my then employer had the contract, and ferrying from Sandtoft to the railhead in Doncaster to go onto our own rolling stock for depots as far afield as Bathgate and Sheerness with a few others inbetween. Back in 2005-6 a Pug 205 van paid £5 bonus but the 10th, 11th and 12th on the truck paid about the same as the first 9 put together so a load of 12 vans was worth almost £90 in bonus per load (compare that to 12 cars that paid about £30). Twice a year I'd do a month filling fleet orders in the run up to new reg numbers and move about 300 vans a week compared to 70-100 cars on dealership deliveries the rest of the year.

1:17 - I could tell you why. According to a story I read in a local, online newspaper - The Hatfield Colander. (btw - the 'paper' is so-named because it takes pride in the fact that it covers only those stories that fall through the holes of local/national media services. Whilst the major stories remain for presentation? The small stories that filtered through are reported by The Hatfield Colander) Anyway, the leftover carriageway was recently cleared to become an overnight truck park to service the two, nearby recycling centres (SJS Agriplant and GBM Tudworth). In essence, a very, specific truck stop. Only those trucks that have a code number from one of the two facilities, may park there. Other vehicles may - of course - use the nearby Moto Doncaster North Service Station. The existing road surface will be greatly expanded. Turning the short stretch that is there now - into a semi-roundabout so that trucks can drive through without having to reverse. A structure at the end of the present roadway (farthest from the roundabout) will be constructed. The building will NOT house any refueling facilities...it will strictly be a glorified, rest stop. However, it will house a short stay motel, individual bathrooms with showers, a restaurant, bar(?) and several shops. And the services will be - supposedly - offered at a significant discount over the nearby service station. Construction should begin by mid-2023. BTW, the present lines on the pavement now are for various, construction/survey/etc. vehicles that will be used before and during construction. Of course, the above is all made up (except the recycling centers and nearby service station). I greatly enjoy this channel. Happy New Year. ☮

@1:23 You know I thought about this and here in the United States, those markings on the ground had been used for idling 18 wheeler trucks for a weigh station (a place where the Dept of Transportation does weight checks for road wear & tear and to ensure that Bills of Lading were correct for taxation purposes). Not sure whether they do that sort of thing in the UK, but it's something to consider.

its cool seeing these. at the 19 at Wolviston, they have a simlar thing, it looks like a dual carriage way went though billingham. and then went out the north. but they build the a19 and bypasses the centre, between billingham and norton. but the old dual carriage way was kept, as a slip road. but the traffic heading north. has access at the services. so the road is left disused. but kool to see the old dual carriage way

The A180 does not seem to limit traffic to that which is normally allowed on motroways (well, I put the yellow man down and can't find such signs). When the dual A1 stretch was built in East Lothian it was this limited, so in future it can be converted to a motorway, but they wouldn't be able to do that with the A180 .
