Michigan Law grad '08 here--have always loved Sarah! Glad to see she's still there. Personally, I hated/made a mistake with law school (and do not practice law, never have). But I love the University of Michigan (and Ann Arbor--miss it, can't wait to visit again!!!) and wholeheartedly recommend this school for absolutely any program. Anyone awaiting an admissions decision to this great school, I wish you luck! It really is an amazing university. My experience with getting in was I applied around Halloween and got the acceptance letter in December, like December 14th or so, I think. But this was a long time ago, i.e. 2004, obviously. Go Blue!

Interesting sentence! For some reason, "request" seems to have more limited usage than "ask." One would never request someone to do something, but rather they would request *that* someone does something. It sounds fine when we insert "that" and alter the infinitive: "Jon Smith requested that the trial court clarify its ruling." But the meaning is slightly altered because now it's not specified to whom Jon is making his request.

When Dean Z read the sentence, I corrected it with "that" as well.

Thank you for sharing, Dean Z! I appreciate Ethan asking such an honest question. I am in the same boat ... the waiting game is such a challenge. Wishing you all the best of luck in getting in on the next Michigan wave. :)

Id very much reccomend steven pinkers book on style. He has a whole section sytematically analyzing every common pet peeve and the ask/request distinction is handled

Does Dean Z actually make admissions decisions or does she simply relay the info to and from Admissions Cat who makes the true final decision?

I think she said in another video that she makes the final call for every single admission

I have a nagging feeling that Leo is definitely an admissions officer at Michigan Law - or should be. Go blue! ;)

Love these videos! I feel like "request" is a transitive verb, and the issue Dean Z's friend was highlighting is related to that. My revision instinct was "Joe Smith requested a clarification from the trial court."

Hi Dean Z, would you please make a video on how you feel about applicants with Spring 2020 transcripts with Pass or Credit grades? There were schools that implemented mandatory pass/fail or credit/no credit grading policies, but I believe the majority did not. Instead, many implemented opt-in policies of sorts, in which students could choose to have none, some, or all of their grades converted to P/F or CR/NCR. How would you view two applicants who were from the same school and graduated at the same time (Spring 2020), but one had credit grades and one did not? Do you think an addendum is necessary for the one with P/CR grades? Thank you so much! Happy holidays! (My name is pronounced like Ming by the way.)

Such a good question :) she actually adresses this in the transcript analysis video (I think). If it isn't in that one, it is in one of the full application reads which I 10/10 recommend!
