After 22 years in the air force, the Airbus A380 is the most modern cockpit I've ever seen. I knew they were switching from yoke to side stick controller. What I didn't expect was pull out keypad and multiple video screens that show everything including external cameras and airport ground maps. Cuts out having all that paperwork trying to find airport taxi maps. Funny thing is I understand what Abu Dhabi Ground is saying. Even the guy running the tug... I am very impressed as to the beauty of the pilot and her great intelligence. It's easy to think women in that side of the world still aren't allowed to drive or go to school. Oh yeah, the Airbus A380 is the largest commercial aircraft which since this video, has been retired by most airlines because of efficiency. And this aircraft is run with such a small cockpit!

Can't drive or go to school. sure about that? looks like these girls are doing a mighty fine job of driving and I'm quite certain they went to school to learn how to fly one of these monsters as well. I think some companies are bringing their A380's out of mothballs as well.. but yeah the new twin turbofans are a lot more efficient. Shaima is not only smart she's gorgeous as well.

Never cease to be amazed by the frequent micro hand movements of the pilots on the airbus joysticks. The plane never seems to be deviating from its path and yet these micro movements seem to be necessary. I have no idea at all how they know exactly how to adjust the joystick!

Can you drive? Think about all the subconscious movements your hand makes to keep a car going straight. Similar thing applies here except wind resistance means you need to adjust, rather than the typography of the road/land

The sidestick is part of the Airbus fly-by-wire philosophy. It is not directly linked to the control surfaces. The inputs of the pilot are fed to computers that in turn activate hydraulic systems which move the control surfaces.

Yep because you need to hand fly the Flight Director up until auto pilot activation is needed. Airline pilots do not need to fly VFR.

Well, they are flying instruments (IFR) in visual conditions (VMC) as you can see on the video. So, a lookout is more than just good airmanship, it's actually required and makes sense. ICAO Annex 2: "An aircraft operated on or in the vicinity of an aerodrome shall, whether or not within an aerodrome traffic circuit, observe other aerodrome traffic for the purpose of avoiding collision". I can only guess that the commander occupying the left seat has the outside in her scanning... when you fly IFR in instrument conditions (IFR weather) your eyes can scan inside only. Hope this clarifies how it works.
