I've listened many times to this glorious performance. It's true what you say about how prepared they are, and that is the result of thousands of hours of solo practice and time in bands and choirs. The goofiness was probably roughed out in the couple hours they had to get ready for this performance. Just my opinion, I wasn't there. But McFerrin is such a respectful musician, I imagine he would have cleared some of the zanier leads he took, which Bona followed seemingly instantaneously. To say that they might have roughed out some of these moments doesn't take away from their astounding artistry. It just points to what consummate musicians usually need to do in order to appear spontaneous on stage.
