This is my favorite song of all time, so I'd like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this reaction. ❤ This one is called M.I.A. (Missing in Action) because the person in the song lost part of himself when he went overseas. As he was ordered to kill innocent civilians in a war for money and oil, and as the soldiers he trained with for months died around him, he repressed a large part of his humanity and lost the innocence many people hold dear. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder diminished his capacity for reasoning and made adjusting to civilian life after everything he saw extremely hard. He came home to a country where people viewed the war as pointless imperialism and viewed him as a murderous tool of the US government. He thought he was going to do something with his life to allow the ones he loves to live happily and not have to worry about dangers in foreign lands, but realized too late that everything he did was for nothing. He'd pray that the sun would never rise in the desert so he wouldn't have to murder anyone as they awoke, and he prayed that the sun would never rise where he lived after it was over so he wouldn't have to survive another day with the guilt that consumed his soul. This song delivers a powerful message about the human beings around us who have lost more than we could ever know because of greed and deception. This was a rough time for M. Shadows vocally. He had surgery in 2004 to remove a blood blister from his vocal folds after 5 years of harsh growling with improper technique. The City of Evil album was recorded around the end of that year flowing into the next, and Matt had said in interviews that he would have preferred more healing time before recording it. Fortunately but unfortunately, the band had gotten an offer to sign with Warner Brothers Records and had to meet their deadline to release the album in 2005. He trained with Ron Anderson, the vocal coach who Axl Rose and Chris Cornell learned from. By the band's next album Avenged Sevenfold, Matt gained more comfort and control with his voice and phased out a lot of nasality except where stylistically interesting. His voice itself hasn't changed much over the years, but his delivery has changed with every album, and in my opinion, was strongest on Nightmare. On a technical level, this is the band's most challenging song. Synyster Gates has said no solo of his is harder to relearn than the 1st one here. His pick positioning at the time he recorded this was very unorthodox, and he was doing a lot of gymnastics without fully considering he'd play the song live. He's lucky he was great enough to adapt, because he's topped a lot of "best guitarist" lists and rarely ever receives critcism from even the saltiest metal snobs. The Rev is very much the same when it comes to drummers, having incredibly healthy gallops here and generally putting in a seamless performance without flaw. Zacky Vengeance did an incredible job giving the vocals space and providing punch in the rhythm section between verse lines. No one can ever really tell exactly what Johnny Christ did here on bass, because he's hardly audible, but whatever he did was great. Everything works, and the overall song sounds brilliant. M.I.A. and City of Evil as a whole will definitely grow on you. Again, thank you so much for listening to this song and giving us your opinion! 🙂

The way he sings with this song is supposed to be emotional and held back in a sense. This is also his technique of singing. If you listen to all of his songs like I have, you will hear that in most of them he holds back a lot of air during screams and regular vocals. It’s not how good of a singer he is (because he is one of the best if not the best) it’s about how he’s using his voice.

What I really don’t get is - people asking for the reaction, and than trying to prove that reaction was wrong, that his nasal voice was the best of the best. People, You want to hear support of your opinion, to feel better - don’t watch reaction, talk with the mirror. (Most of reactions are fake and pretend that they love everything, if someone says the truth about nasal voice - you will not satisfied). We have Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, and Pantera, why do we need a bands who copycats them.

@@IYOU I don’t think that avenged sevenfold copies them at all. They sure did get inspired by some of those bands but they didn’t copy them. I’ve done probably too much research on m shadow’s singing techniques and the people he’s worked with say he’s the best singer they’ve ever have worked with. Like I said before and I’ll say again. He doesn’t always sing in the nasal tone. He changes it from song to song. It’s depending on the setting and mood of the song. And also this album was released right after m shadows recovered from an injury from screaming incorrectly so this may hold him back a bit on this particular album but I’m simply stating I don’t agree with what you’re saying and if you did more research and listened to more songs first then you might not have this opinion of this singer. Or maybe it just doesn’t sound good to you I don’t really care. Don’t get offended cuz someone comments a thing that makes you a bit annoyed. I watched you’re video cuz I was interested and this what I thought of what you said. Isn’t that what comments are for? Plus I am helping you with viewer exposure by commenting anyway. M. Shadows (lead singer) has one of the greatest metal voices, have to say. At this time of their music, it was in 2005, his voice was still developing along with getting help from vocal coach(s). He had a very raspy and slightly “pushy” tone as you can tell in some live versions. In later 2006 and most definitely 2007, his voice became amazing. He adapted an extremely powerful voice as you can see in “Live in the LBC A7X.” His voice from then up until later “The Stage” album. In 2013, songs such as “Crimson Day” reveal how powerful his voice is. His voice was much correlated to a near “Broadway singer.”

M. Shadows has an incredible singing technique. The thing about his technique in this song, as well as every song, is the demand that the song asks for. The message isn't always sold by just the words alone. It is also sold by the emotion and the method that the voice draws it out, sometimes requiring it to stem outward from the simple techniques passed through vocal coaching. Realism if you prefer and how a voice may sound in response to a specific circumstance. This perhaps may not be what you yourself are looking for in music, and that's free to your own interpretation and opinion, however it doesn't make their voice bad in any stretch of the word. He has a range and a power in his voice that many singers, even popular ones, can only dream of having.

Definitely have to check out a song from Avenged Sevenfold Live in the LBC now so you can see what a beast the singer is! I’d suggest the song Almost Easy but he kills it on every song. Truly one of the most powerful rock singers. MIA is from an older album on which he stylistically decided to use more of that nasal sound and this song in particular is probably when he uses it the most
@chrismeadows42163 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, M.I.A. during the verses and chorus is the least abrasively nasal song on the record. Obviously the intro and outro are a different case. I find Strength of the World, Sidewinder, and The Wicked End are the most nasal songs across the board. Yuliya would have been really put off by them, without a doubt. I'm pretty happy you chose Almost Easy for the LBC show. It doesn't have anything missing like other songs, and it highlights The Rev. Good call.

This is probably already in the comments but his voice sounds the way it does because in the albums before this one, his singing style caused extensive vocal cord damage. He had surgery and this is the first album they made post-surgery. Ahh no! You don’t like M. Shadows voice haha. I had that argument with a lot of my friends, apparently his voice is not for everyone, i love it though. In his defense his voice sounds more nasal on this “City of Evil” album, it was around the time he had surgery on his Vocal cords. If you compare for example with “ Hail to the King” a song from albums after, he’s better. But I understand your point, though it’s funny this album where he struggles the most to sing it’s the one I like better, I kinda like his weird tone! Peace ✌️
@chrismeadows42163 жыл бұрын
For me, this tone sets him apart from other vocalists most even though I don't feel he had as much control over it as he did around Nightmare. I view Hail to the King as Nightmare's younger brother. It doesn't have as much courage, but it does have similar talent. You won't hear Matt going for the crazy belts on Hail to the King that he did on Nightmare, and especially not the haphazard belts he did on City of Evil. You can hear downright honks and grunts from these City of Evil vocals. Very chesty and very raw. On Nightmare, those are solid, clear distortion. On Hail to the King, a nasal aaaaaaaaaaaa without much weight. He started to restrain himself on record so it would be easier to sing the material. City of Evil is outright his most eccentric album vocally. It's instantly recognizable but somewhat annoying. People would recognize M. Shadows on any album, but with City of Evil, everything he does is easier to pinpoint. He doesn't come across as a singularly proficient vocalist with outstanding clarity, but he does come across as someone who can push envelopes and deliver a hard rocking performance. When you hear him on a song like Save Me or Welcome to the Family or Acid Rain, you can be like "Oh yeah, this dude is a great singer", but aside from having great distortion and vibrato, there's not much to talk about. City of Evil is an album where you can study every little weird thing he did, and that makes it fun and memorable. No other band in the 2000s was doing what Matt was doing with any success.
@heliosvice3 жыл бұрын
@@chrismeadows4216 Yeah I agree with pretty much everything. City of Evil is unique, I was very influenced by that album, the melodies and harmonies, his unique tone, I get that some people may not like it, but i like the nuances he does. Like you said it’s what sets him apart. It works for me.

It sounds like the most noble thing a person can do, but I wonder how many of us LIVE for honor on just a regular daily basis? 8:37 "Symbiosis" That's one of my favorite words, and I love how you use it to describe how this band connects musical styles from the past with modern music. 💯⭐ This is indeed a technically complex song at times. I totally agree with you about all you said on this group that i paid attention by your reactions. They play a good music kinda modern Iron Maiden inspired, but the problem for me is that i still listen Iron maiden as new , so i dont need and i dont feel another group that reminds to .. Then ..then ..i always noticed that i dont feel and i dont like at all the singer 's voice of this group, he has no chest-voice , no really aggressive or screaming or powerfull, not sexy or bluesy..nierher raspy or catchy rock in any way to my ears.. Because of the singer's voice i never listened Avenged 7 fold very pleasantly, i listen only with YOU ...and i agree what you said,totally in not the only one who doesn't appreciate this type of voice , but the music is very good , not my kind neither that but objectivity is good ! Honestly i prefer hundreds times the songs like INVISIBILE of a new group called IYou Unlimited...do you know them ?? I like ...especially the singer and the lead guitarist 🔝💯 In the end as Marylin Monroe you are simply lovable 🖤

I listen to around 30-50 songs with A7X for several hours every week, I would never listen to this song. To say that they are Iron Maiden inspired that means you have many good surprises to explore. After Matt's surgery Ron Anderson the vocal coach for Chris Cornell, Alicia Keys and others told this about Matt: "He started studying with me every day for five or six months, and the tone started changing as everything was coming back. He had a style in mind that he wanted to achieve for this record. I helped him towards it, but he knew what he wanted, so I simply showed him how to do it. He was incredibly determined, and I’d say he’s one of the best singers in the world right now.” You need to hear better songs from A7X and not the ones that, 12 year old fortnite players who just found metal, listens to.

@@TobbeBoll Yes i understand your point of view but it goes also on tastes , i have never felt confident when i listened casually in the past Avenged sevenfold , i listen so many groups and music from 80's that i have not time for something that by the skin doesn't attract me , it not my kind of confident group , like Disturbed for example , some important groups i never felt in my soul for Vocals , Music , Guitars, mood in general ... all for me already heard o not particulary impressed because a mixture of yet heard

@@andreaburgi481 I started to listen to Metallica around '95, to me they owned the world between 1982-2000. When I found A7X, in a few seconds I heard the DNA of Metallica. To me A7X is an evolution of Metallica. The 2016 "The Stage" album is a true masterpiece that I feel blessed to be alive to witness. Maybe it is not for everyone and that is ok, I just wish that others would get to experience the joy I have had.

@@TobbeBoll A7X an evolution of Metallica ?? No please , dont' t tell this or you are just a fandom Club of A7X )) . Kill'em all , Ride the Lightning , MASTER OF PUPPETS , Justice for all , Black album , Load .. what have to share with A7X ? Maybe is a generation difference or a musical barrier but A7X i found out only here with Yulia , i missed them all from ever , in Italy and Europe they are not at the level of the Bigs or Big Four from ever and for me is a surprise they like so much to many people because i cant find nothing special in their music for me boring , its taste and feeling ) i liked very tough music in my early beginning in 80's like Slayer and Megadeth , so for me Metal was strong extreme emotions and dark atmospheres like this for example kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmSVl5pnaLCFotU , so i grew up listening tough music or sweet music to soothe and lift my soul , not rock metal in the middle style apart the Big names like Iron Maiden , Judas , Ozzy , Alice in Chains , Wasp ,

@@andreaburgi481 I see where you come from, we might come from different times and angles when it comes to metal. I saw "the big four" when they toured together. A7X have the same dynamics as Metallica, the songs are complex structure that takes you on a journey, from fast to soft with highs and lows. Top level on every instruments they ride melodic solos that fits the songs just like Metallica. The Nightmare album with songs like "Tonight the world dies" or "Save Me" are amazing. From "The Stage" the song "Exist" is a modern masterpiece as "Master of puppets" "Orion". And song like for example Roman Sky from the Grammy Museum or God Hates us live RockamRing 2011 shows that few bands metal bands can compare. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJmncmp6pa2Uqs0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXmVZopplpKpr5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHO8h598jdh4g6c kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpTLgHV3p9-YnNk
