This reminds me of a game of SMITE I once played, back when there was a competitive league for Arena. 5v5, constant mirrored waves of minions marching to the center of a big open arena. Players dancing in and out of position to get last hit on all the minions so they don't fall behind on gold earned and give their opponents the video game equivalent of a material advantage. Constant jousting, poking at one another with attacks that are predicted and dodged. Guardian (tank) up front taking hits as ultimate attacks fly out every few minutes (like queens, I guess?) and strike back and forth from both sides, each fractions of a second from tipping the scales. It was something like 17 minutes. Teams were within 200-300 gold of equal. No one ever died on either team. In the end, the last minutes of the game are drawn out as each wave of minions (pawns) only count for a single point, counting down the last 10 points until victory, where a player kill (piece) is worth 5 points and can happen in an instant. The last seconds of the match came down to a furious effort to strike forward and kill the enemy's last minion, trading ultimate skills, abilities, attacks and health as if they were the remaining rooks and bishops, and we won by a single point as we managed to just by a hair, while an enemy ultimate was being cast to kill the last minion... we killed theirs first. A player on our team was less than half a second from being killed, diving in a final gambit to clutch victory. It was the most intense, cerebral, twitch-reflex and strategic play I ever experienced. No mistakes were made all game long. And it was the single most boring match I know of ever being played, which I wish I had a video of from back in 2015 or so, but my god (haha SMITE pun, the playable characters are various gods and mythological figures) it would be the most absolutely frustrating and boring game to watch played. In the way that watching a perfect no-hitter game of baseball means there's also no action, and you just slowly build tension and excitement that you might get to witness one of the rarest things in the game. Playing it was exhilarating and I hope and imagine that's what it felt like for Ding and Nepomniachtchi.
