In 2010, when Stephen Herz’s multiple myeloma returned, he turned to a clinical trial of a new immunotherapeutic. After 17 years fighting the cancer, the new treatment succeeded and a bone marrow biopsy couldn’t detect myeloma. Learn how cancer research is improving the lives of people like Stephen at www.AACR.org/CancerProgressReport.

My brother was diagnosed 3 years in July, he was 53 at the time. Had chemo at first but responded so well he hasn't needed it since. This disease does ebb and flow and it does go into a kind of remission, sort of hides for a while. That was the lay man term my brothers consultant explained to us. It will never go away. Until cure found! But, it's not ( I believe) an instant death sentence, it's not curable (at the moment) but, treatable!

I'm 65 and was diagnosed with stage one in September of 2018. After all the radiation from a partial clavicle tumor and chemo, I'll be getting a stem cell transplant. I hope this will get the remission we're looking for. God bless you all.

How did your transplant go? I had one in 2009 and kind of regret it. I don't believe it's the reason I'm still alive. In fact I think it was a big negative. My doctor wanted to do another one a year or two ago and I just know it would kill me. I'm doing very well without it. I was sick for years after my first one and I believe it weakened me permanently.

@@dangrimes5078 It was very tough. Afterwards the staff told me I went through a form of PTSD and was like that for a few months. I have to stay on maintenance therapy, but my cancer is in remission with no trace whatsoever. Thank God and my team. Every day is touch and go. I was feeling great when I was off the therapy as it is basically poison that I'm taking, but hope to get used to it at one point. It's incurable for now, so I need to stay on it. Take care and let me know how you progress.

My husband was diagnosed 3 years ago. He has now been receiving Chemo for 2 years, with NO QUALITY of life ! VERY MUCH PAIN. Every day is different. All his Doctor keeps saying is they are trying to give hm Quality of LIFE ! But when you have NONE, how long should you keep putting the TOXIC CHEMO onto your body WITH NO RESULTS . His wish now....to fall asleep and never wake up. He is now 67 years old. His children are coming to visit, one he has not scene in 5 years, because they don’t live in the same Country as us. My PRAYER for him, is he sees the children & grandchildren, then can pass.

You need a good pain management nurse. I was a hospice nurse many years ago, we had full range to get whatever the patient needed to have a good quality of life. Sounds like your husband could benefit more going under hospice care. But all in all much in modern medicine has changed alot, sorry to say most not for the better.

You're one of the lucky patients who made it through this disease. At first, the chemo was working very well for my husband, and like you, at the end of many rounds of chemo the myeloma cells were almost undetectable in his blood. After the stem cell transplant, everything went down from there. He passed away in 2017 after trying the newest chemo drug for multiple myeloma out there. He was asked if he would try a bone marrow transplant, but after going through the treatments he went through, there was no way he would do it again. By that time, his bone marrow was completely destroyed, and there was nothing that could be done for him.

@@kl3625 My doctor says Stage 2, but from what I have been reading, I think I'm more in Stage 1. Detection began with a CT scan and then MRI, when they found bone erosion and lesions on my rib. Biopsy followed, and then diagnosis confirmed MM. Bone aspiration (taking bone marrow sample) to determine prognosis and the extent of the cancer. I am male, close to 60 years old, and I can still work in the IT industry. But I cannot meet my clients face to face as often anymore because the treatment compromises my immune system, and getting sick, especially these days with the new coronavirus going around, will put me in a grave situation, perhaps literally =/ Fortunately, I can submit my projects from my home office. Myeloma was actually detected by x-ray in 2018, but I didn't know what to do with the information until my orthopedist pointed it out over a year later. As far as I know, science has made great strides in the treatment, and I am not too worried. Still, I pray that your husband will pull through his situation successfully, and that both of you find strength in each other and in those who love you.

@@3Davy he was so thin. So weak and found out some of his ribs were already brittle. Even some part of the spine collapsing because of the myeloma. And he got bumps on his chest last time 😔 and he can not eat anymore and suddenly he cannot speak and weak until he was brought in the hospital. They put tube on his mouth then... he cannot make it anymore 😔

@@abshgnzls My father also was weak and he was not eating anymore,it is over a year now and I am not over it.I'll just tell you what happened. My father was admitted to the hospital 2022 on October 18, where they saw that he had bone marrow cancer, he also had very bad lungs. He was there for 18 then 6 days and then 8 days. He was also there for the last 8 days of last year and on the 23rd he had to go to oncology, where they measured a trace of Corona, you know, and he had to stay.that corona turned out to be false, so no Corona. My brother and I were there on Monday and my brother was not really ill, but he had a starting cold and was it the flu, I don't know, he had a sore throat and I didn't know that, but he was wearing a mouth mask. On Thursday my father got the flu, and on Saturday he died. I think it is my brother's fault that he died. I have no life since then. Sometimes I want to die myself and wish I wouldn't wake up anymore. When I talk about it I cry and can't think of anything else.

My mum has multiple myeloma stage 3, the doctor told us that she wouldn't survive more than 3 months if she didn't take a treatment. Now she has her target medicine and chemotherapy & stem cell transplantation. She feels much better at the moment but the doctors told us that the average of life is 29 months after stem cell transplantation. I really want to know how to do can live with her myeloma.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I wonder how us she now, a year later?.... my doctor called me the other day, and said I have protein in my blood 😟 he thought this could be a form of bone marrow cancer..... I've been researching on this for the a week now. I'm lost, devastated.... being a single father of 3, I don't understand and don't know where to go from here.
