Aaliyah could sing better than people gave her credit. She chose to sing soft for style. She had great range, lower register, and beautiful tone on top of a gorgeous head voice. Imagine if she actually had time to mature her voice.

She died so young on her last album and over her last year of life you could see she was starting to understand her voice, it was maturing and she was gaining more control of it. She had nice runs, good low notes and a very supple head voice she had the makings of everything she just wasn't quite at the step of putting it all together but she was well on her way. Very very sad

Very much underrated. People slept on her vocally & they're still sleeping apparently. There are only a few tracks that allow her to fully showcase vocal abilities. Consider most of her biggest hits are mid & up tiempo dance tracks & most ppl are distracted by those hard beats Tim makes & not listening for vocal performance.

Aaliyah's voice was solid but I think it's safe to say she was more revered as a dancer. Which is really something because so, so many "stars" today get away with being one or the other, and not even particularly well. Y'all know who I'm talking about. It's hard to judge Aaliyah's vocal artistry because she was just so young and never got a chance to develop further and refine and hone her craft. Which is a great shame. But her HV was beautiful and consistent, and gratefully she left behind so many hits to enjoy.

Get into baby girls self titled album. It's an absolute classic and a clear example of an artist with an abundance of creativity and adventurism with so much farther to go. I still get teary eyed when I think about the fact that her and Timbaland were thinking about experimenting with more European punk and chicago house influences with their next material, in the vain of the iconic "Try Again".

The song you're asking about is One In A Million and it actually inspired Janets song. Anyways i love your reaction. She really did have amazing control with her voice. Her runs and transitions between strong belts to her sweet falsettos and the other way around are deff impressive. Something we don't hear anymore with singer now a days and singers that have come out within last 15 years. Her voice was golden. Get into Aaliyah music. Different colors within her catalogue. From sweet tracks to heavy hip hop beats with edgy mysterious sounds. Her work is impressive and does not sound dated at all. With the exception of her first album but even with that she mixed in sweet falsetto's n harmonies over hard beats which wasn't being done at that time.

She a was lyric soprano, that type of voices are specials and beautiful to sing r&b,powerful ballads like on her song:"i refuse" or romantic pop,she definetly could sing every type of genere musical as she wanted on her only way,but sadly Aaliyah was on her best moment when she died & her vocal range was progressing tremendously, unfortunately we couldn´t see all that potential of voice that she had for show us here, she just had 21 when she died,at the moment of her death her vocal range sounded most stronger and the proof of the amazing voice that she had was reflected on her last album, i read in some article that i don´t remember :(, that she probably to future albums she was going to involve in the electronic garage dance on UK, would have be fascinating heard that musical propose that she was going to share with the world, but sadly she died.

She truly was “at her best” (no pun intended) when she stood in place and sang. She could also dance, but she never really successfully mastered doing BOTH simultaneously. I would liken her to modern-day Rihanna in that they both could actually sing well, but couldn’t really get the breath control down when performing. I wouldn’t go as far to say that she was a “studio singer,” but her voice in many of her live performances tended to be shake-y when she would add that dance / performance element.

That's probably why Aaliyah doesn't get much credit. She left us before they could really gather an extensive edit of vocals like some artist that were around with her, that are still around today.
