This episode has two great scenes that really hurt my heart: Katara’s speech when she’s talking to her dad, also When Aang brought the memory of her Crying saving her life. 🥺💔

My favorite moment in this episode is the contrast they show between the supportive father Hokota and the abusive father Ozai. Hokota not only allows Katara to share her thoughts and feelings freely even when they are negative towards him but he actually listens and supports Katara navigate her negative emotions on her own and then he reinforces his love for her. Ozai on the other hand isn't really interested in listening to Zuko and does all the talking which works for that messed up relationship given that Zuko is terrified to say the wrong thing or to tell the truth. Keep in mind that this extremely uncomfortable exchange between Ozai and Zuko is Ozai telling Zuko that he's proud of him (an example of a 'celebratory' moment or 'high' point in this relationship dynamic) whereas the heart-warming exchange between Hokota and Katara is a conflict (an example of a 'stormy' moment or 'low' point in this relationship dynamic). It's a poignant demonstration that a low point in a supportive and nurturing relationship is still preferable to a high point in a dysfunctional and abusive relationship.

I think that's one of the few scenes of Azula without make up so that might be why she looks so different

I think this is probably the most underrated episode in the show. Might be my favourite season opener of all time. The way it parallel's Aang and Zuko, as well as the loving and warm dynamic between Katara and Hakoda, which cuts to Zuko and Ozai's cold and distant reunion. The episode has so many good moments. It's in my top 15 of the show for sure. It's also an amazing tone-change, for the darker and more serious Book 3. I also find the dynamic between Zuko and Azula here to be very interesting, so I like that you talk about that. I think it's a bit deeper than a lot of people give it credit for. That's just Azula's character in general I guess.

Fr aang and zuko have been paralleled since the start of the show, and now zuko and katara are too. They had that moment about their mothers and how the fire nation's hurt them in the book 2 finale and now with their fathers. If you think about it, they must have lost their mothers and their fathers around the same time and in the same order. Ouch. I'm all caught up now, excited to go on the book 3 journey with you!
