There are a lot of people who thought Iroh was silent for the first few episodes of Book 3 because of Mako's unfortunate passing but on the DVD commentary for the episode the creators say they'd always planned for Iroh to remain silent.

I love how the fact that Iroh was able to send the message and obtain the relic shows he still had friends in the Fire Nation.

Something that's often pointed out about this episode and some of the last few is the framing in every scene with zuko and iroh. Iroh is the one in the cell, but the shots and composition make zuko look like the one behind bars. And only once Iroh tells him he has the power to bring balance to the world, does the camera start zooming through the bars. Super cool stuff. I've watched a ton of atla reactions, and I think one of the most unique things about yours is how obsessed with zuko you were from day 1. It certainly built up a ton of anticipation for the later seasons and made me stick around! I also think you're very observant and good at making connections between things

Thank you I really appreciate that! That’s an awesome detail with Zuko and Iroh I’m gonna love going back and watching this part of the show again. I’ll look out more for things like that in the rest of the series!

One of my favorite shots of the whole series. He's outside and free but suffering and surround by darkness. Iroh is locked up but at peace and bathed in light.

You know, Roku and Sozin's conflict and conclusion are actually foreshadowed earlier in the episode when they were sparring in the palace yard. Roku and Sozin fought: firebending spar not talking or seeing each other for decades Force of nature knocked Roku down: tree root volcano eruption Sozin came to rescue: holding unbalanced Roku helping Roku containing the eruption In the end Sozin let Roku down: releasing Roku from his hand leaving Roku to die on the erupting island

Fire nation was dominating trade in the avatar world in Kyoshi and Roku’s time because fire allowed them to use advanced metallurgy and make fast steel ships. Most of the other nations were at a disadvantage relative to them Thus if you elevate your buyers, you can extract more from them. This is what Sozin meant. The US did the same to many countries in South America aka “Banana republics” It could also mean outsourcing to these countries so the main country (fire nation) can remain wealthy

One of the best episodes in the show. #9 for me, but I could easily see it being higher for many. Idk how to explain, but this episode just gives me that special feeling, that hits deep. The scene with Sozin bringing the title full circle at 11:05 is the epitome of that.

Wanting to "spread peace and prosperity" to other nations is imperialist talk; it's an empty justification so that the benevolent imperialists can feel good about themselves. No one asked for their help and helping when help is not wanted is not helpful, it's intrusive and can easily become abusive. Remember in the beginning when Roku and Sozin were practice fighting and Sozin caught Roku and held him up for a short while and then let go so Roku fell. Sozin was destined to let go and not follow through with helping Roku. Why Roku continues his battle with the volcano is a question many people have and they never explain. A common explanation is that the boats just were not far enough away. I think there might maybe also be to try and mitigate some of the global impacts of immense volcanic eruptions (Sozin remarked that he'd never seen such a large volcanic eruption before): volcanic smoke that can suffocate or poison people, can cause wildfires, and also block out the sun for days; it can cause a tsunami which would devastate coastal and island cities; it can increase global warming and lead to extremely cold winters (I think many notably cold winters in history occurred after a volcanic event). I'm not entirely sure what he could do to mitigate those effects but I guess it's worth a shot when you have crazy four element bending skills.

So much meaning in this show. I think I mention in the next episode I love seeing comments like this from people who have a lot to say about the show.

^ 1816 is known as "the year without a summer", caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora (located in Indonesia) in 1815 Fun fact: the famine caused by crop failures cause a young (7) Joseph Smith & his family to move a lot as a child and ended up to a part of New York that was known for religious revivalism, which would have a huge impact on him and how he "translated" the Book of Mormon

I dunno if anyones mentioned this yet but, the Day of Black Sun is a 2 parter, episodes 10 and 11 so however you’ll plan out the next few episodes, you’ll want to watch those back to back
