I'm curious to see if my interpretation of that scene with Ozai and Azula matches with anyone else's I always thought that Ozai changed his mind because of what Zuko said to him during the Day of Black Sun. When he told him about Azula lying about Zuko killing the Avatar and giving credit to Zuko, Ozai realized that he couldn't trust his daughter to be loyal to him either. She lied and hid the fact his greatest threat was, possibly, still alive to gain his favor. And giving Azula the position of Fire Lord was going to be an empty title. Because with him as The Phoenix King, she would still be serving under him and she would never really rule. And he didn't dare take him with her, because he didn't know if her lying about the Avatar being dead was a trap and if she would turn on him at the last minute.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that Azula hasn’t done all of this because she has her own ambition. No, she’s done all this because she wants to keep Ozai’s approval. Because that’s how things worked in their home. “You can’t treat me like this. You can’t treat me like Zuko!” Azula is still reeling from Mai and Ty Lee’s betrayal, something she could never have calculated. So for her father to change plans and essentially leave her behind at home while he goes off an enacts the plan she came up with… she felt discarded. The Azula we’ve come to know and fear up until this point would never have spoke that way to her father otherwise. It’s also the first time she actually sounds small. Without spoiling anything, something about Aang's struggling about killing hit me years later. I remember watching the premiere and thinking like you, killing is tough but Ozi needs to go. But years later rewatching something clicked and had been a running issue for Aang the whole series. He has and always sees himself not as the Avatar as much as he identifies as 'The Last Airbender'. The last of his people. The last of his culture and history. If he stopped "being" an Airbender then they are truly gone. Of all the lessons he learned as a monk, the biggest was conflict avoidance and mercy. It's how airbenders fight and his first instinct. So the act of killing anyone... Murder... the complete abandonment of his monk teachings committing the cardinal sin of his people... Aang sees this as the final death of his people. He is the last one and wouldn't be a true Airbender anymore. The kids sadly can't understand just how abhorrent what they are asking of him is to him and why he only ever gets so angry about his people. Love the content and happy I got to share my perspective.

Yeah, I mean Zuko is right at the beginning. I think having grown up with his father, he knows just what kind of person he is. He's the only one that personally knows how cruel and bad he is, so it's the most real to him, even more so than Aang. Kind of good he's the one that snaps people into gear Also Ozai is the one person who can control Azula because he's been her abuser since she was a child, same with Zuko, she just hasn't realized it or maybe has and just accepted it, while Zuko has rebelled against being abused by his own father. So yes.. he can and does control her.. sadly. I mean that's the sad thing about Azula, she's a manipulated and abused child, not some world conquering mastermind. She may think she is, she may come off as that, but at the end of the day she's like what, 15 or 16? No, her father chose to put her on the front lines where she could get hurt repeatedly, and warped her mind about right and wrong.. Zuko had Uncle, Azula doesn't have anyone..

In another world, there might have been room for the nuance that Aang's struggle here deserved. As the last airbender, if Aang compromises on the airbender way of life, then it could be said that the airbenders really would go extinct, even if Aang were still alive. But, unfortunately, this is a kid's show, subject to all the censorship and executive meddling that entails. Hell, iirc back in the day they actual took the show off the air for the last part of season 3, making it internet-only.

17:53 The thing with Aang’s refusal to kill, specifically to go back on all of the teachings of the Air Nomads, is also part of the other big thing on his shoulders that he won’t be able to deal with until after the war is ended: Being the last of his people alone to rebuild and preserve his culture. He s in a position where straying the core principals of his culture s letting the genocide of those people be completed. No Avatar before him has had the weight of restoring the entire existence of one of the nations the way he’ll have to spend the rest of his life doing. On top of that, it’s the nation most steeped in the spiritual side of their world. For the way what happens in the material world and specifically to the Avatar has a tangible effect on the balance of the world, to kill and not be able to preserve the foundation of what it means to be an Air Nomad would have a profound negative impact on the balance of the world. If anyone else killed the Fire Lord, I wouldn’t be mad. Shit, I don’t think Aang would be mad. I think he would mourn that was how things had to be, but I think he’d accept that it had to happen bd that he would then have to do his job to restore balance. However, doing it himself would be akin to locking himself from being unable to go into the Avatar State only it would be something he couldn’t come back from. He could never undo the blood on his hands, even if it wasn’t the wrong thing to do for the world. At the end of the day though, and in the episodes after, I think the balance Aang finds that we don’t see in the Avatars he consult in the balance between himself as an individual and himself as the Avatar. He can fulfill his duties while not compromising or denying himself and who he is. The Avatars he speaks to talk about their regrets, things they should’ve done, thing they say they had to do no matter what they felt, but very single one of them says what they do with their own lives and experiences being what informs it. I’m trying to ignore the input of their own lives and experiences, they favor the duty of their role as the Avatar. Aang chooses the harder path that is a constant balancing act. The best interests of the world without losing who he is. There is a reason the Avatar isn’t an immortal or lives forever like many f the spirits we see. They live many lives because to be a human is what they need to be. Even with the whole world, everyone he loves, every authority he looks to for guidance telling him thy what’s left in him of his entire civilization needs to be abandoned for the greater good, he holds onto his principles without abandoning the world.

Melon Lord, Aang is a pacifist. While the series revolves around fighting, Aang never attacks first. He only fights in self defense and the defense of others. And he never acts to take lives. For him to intentionally kill Ozai would be a betrayal of his beliefs. And his people. And he in the only living Air Nomad in the world. It would be the lose his very culture. This is why Aang is so upset. Also love that when Aang is missing, Zuko is the one they immediately turn to. Not only does it show that Zuko is the Lancer in the group, what he was always meant to be, but it also shows the trust that he has earned. These people hated him and now, they trust him. June return is probably in part due to her voice actor voicing another important character who we will see next episode. On to The Old Master. We're in the end game now. Their stories may continue after the show, but we approach the hours that will decide the world's fate in a way few events can. I prefer to eat watermelon with a light dusting of salt over drinking it, but I imagine that would still be very refreshing after heavy training. Just us and Zuko. Can we just appreciate the exponential improvement on how much focus Toph has with the sand? Like, that's at least two place values better than she was. Granted, she could focus on a small area without the din of battle, and she didn't make more little people, but that's still no mean feat. Sokka has only been able to practice his artistic side a couple times in the last month. Give him time, and he might be able to do some nice pieces of art. I don't think those are buck teeth so much as a necklace. Zuko's going drill sergeant. It's an island for the rich and powerful elite of the Fire Nation, and that usually means fire benders. They have some time. Now Aang, threats only work if the person you're telling said threat to believes you'll carry them out. And you're a hippy at heart. Zuko felt fine burning stuff from the house when he was here with his girlfriend, his sister, and Ty Lee. The logic of waiting tracks. Aang isn't at proper proficiency, and his trump card was ripped up by Azula. To top it off, the Comet is the day when the battle will be the hardest. And waiting an extra month when the Fire Nation is already basically the victor won't seem like a big deal at first. Even ignoring the comet, every day means more villages under the flared toe boot of the fire nation. More rebels executed. More reprisal killings. More extortion. More pressure on the Northern Water Tribe. More garrisons to control conquered territory. More airship production. More ship production. More collaborators seeking money, power, or even safety. And less resistance and hope by the conquered as subjugation becomes the status quo. Though hope and resistance will never fully die out. While the intention behind it is monstrous, it is true that you need to break an enemy's hope to some extent. They need to believe that there is nothing to be gained from further conflict that can't be achieved through a treaty or walking away at lower cost. The enemy must accept defeat. THAT SAID, mass destruction is really not a good idea in general, and industrialized/institutionalized cruelty will breed new levels of hate and contempt for the perpetrator so they are never truly safe from reprisal. And Ozai's implementation of Azula's plan is not only monstrous on a level that rivals or surpasses the most destructive wartime leaders IR, it is untennable in the long term. This is destruction that could only be rivaled by nuclear attackS. The long term consequences could be unthinkable. Possibly a collapse of the ecosystem for hundreds of miles. Or worse. No new world will rise. There may be remains of the old that cling to life, but this....... this is apocalyptic. Like... imagine if the entire Amazon forest was burned away in a week tops. Now imagine if the fire couldn't be stopped from spreading. This could be worse if Ozai has his way. On a more positive note, it is fortunate that Combustion Man isn't alive anymore. They touched on this a little and I inferred more on rewatching with you in the leadup and actual invasion of Black Sun. What with Aang missing every dang shot on the target dummy that represented a specific person. The Fire Lord can't be reasoned with, but Aang is committed to not taking a life and the Avatar State can't force his hand like before. So now we get to the crux of Aang's dilemma. Not one argument from me about the training being cool, but it is also quite dangerous. No safe way to simulate, this is effectively a live fire exercise. MELON LORD is having too much fun. Rotating shots are so hard to animate. This is war, Aang. And the deciding battle is in less than 3 days. Even as a prisoner, Ozai would still be one of the stronger and best trained firebenders in the world. He would still command influence and respect from the army, navy, and the world's first air force. He would still have many nobles wanted to work with him over his kind hearted son. To lock him away, he must first be broken and made weak in the eyes of his people. And even then, there would be diehards, fanatics, and opportunistic hold outs. "This goes against everything I learned from The Monks." I'll touch on this later when the last piece of evidence has been seen. Aang is just a 12 year old raised by hippies, but if the Fire Lord isn't utterly defeated, this war will not end. You won't expect who is out there, but there was a blink and you'll miss it piece of foreshadowing. "Everyone else got to go on a life changing field trip with Zuko." Sorry, Toph, no time for that, and Zuko has a much worse family than yours. Toph's is dysfunctional, but miles more functional than the royal family of scheming war mongers and psychopaths. Also the people who got roped into the nonsense like Zuko's mom. Toph's parents loved her. They didn't respect of trust her, but they still loved her. Which is more than Ozai gave his son until Zuko fulfilled conditions. And Toph's parents never struck her. So Zuko """wins""" the trauma contest. Zuko's a former prince (and not just of a village), the eldest (I think).... and yes, the most qualified by experience of hunting Aang. Okay, just how many royal/elite guard are there? I'm not sure even Palpatine had this many of his red robed guards! Supervillains need the drip. Royals need the drip. Royal supervillain maniacs without drip aren't taken seriously. So the focus is mainly on how Azula is still desperate for affirmation and approval (with Ozai being her only remaining source), but Ozai said the airships were headed for Ba Sing Se. So he intends to burn and bomb the city his daughter captured a few months ago after it being a main target for the last century. Which, while not often addressed by analysis, could be another gaping wound in her pride. She won a great victory for her people, now her father is going to upstage her by slagging and blasting the city. At the end of the day, Azula will listen to Ozai above any other, She respects him above any other. Even with Zuko gone (no more rivalry or competition) and all she accomplished, Azula is still a 14 year old girl struggling to hold onto her dad's conditional affection. Good guess on the Lotus Tiles, but no. We have a more mundane yet unique approach here. June is fighting on par with a Kiyoshi warrior. I kind of want to know where she trained because while you need raw talent to be that good, you also need to refine it quite well.

Something you're forgetting is a major cultural difference between them all. Aang, and the Air Nomads, were sworn to not take lives... ANY lives. They're religious vegetarians. Now while Aang has occasionally... lapsed in that or indirectly killed, he's never gone into a fight with the express purpose of killing. Sokka and Katara? They're from a pre-modern tribal society that lived under siege. Yes they sanitized the violence for TV but in the raid that saw their mother killed you REALLY think Hakota (their father) and the men of the tribe didn't kill any of the Southern Raiders? Right there with Sokka and Katara watching? Further, the Southern Water Tribe was barely eeking out an existence as hunter-gatherers. Sokka and likely Katara both had gone out hunting and killed animals for food. Further, remember Katara's adorable hoodie... with the white fur lining? Yeah, they don't have faux fur. In other words to both of them violence and killing is acceptable and even normal, especially for survival. They really don't understand the situation Aang has been put into. Likewise Zuko was raised with a military mindset and again, while sanitized, there's multiple places and fights where it's clear he could or did take killing blows. Iroh likewise has no hesitation about killing when the need arises and this is universal with Fire Benders, as even the Sun Warriors clearly were ready and willing to kill to maintain their security and safety. So again, he has no idea what situation Aang is in. Lastly Toph and Suki... and, well... Toph clearly has never had a high priority on caring about other people's lives. As awesome as she is she clearly has little to no morals. And Suki? A warrior trained since birth in multiple weapons and styles who actively fought in the conflict? Yeah... she's probably killed people too at this point and again has no inherent moral objection to killing bad guys... So Aang is between a rock and a hard place. Every one of his friends genuinely sees the solution as assassination, they have no moral objections to it, and, well, most have become hardened to such violence. What solution can Aang come up with? We shall see...

In technicality its taking one life in war is only considered murder if the life was either innocent or defenseless. So Aang killing Ozia would be justified.
@skits_3d824 Жыл бұрын
It's Aang's last thing he has of his people. The lessons he learned as an Airbender. This goes against everything he was taught and it would make his father figure sad to know he just threw that all away to kill someone. Even if he is a evil man Aang's gonna have to find away.

People always forget that the important part about aang isn't just being the avatar but the last airbender, he's the LAST hope of the air nomads teachings being passed on to the next generation. To have a tradition of generation after generation of pacifism be ended by him would be like having the air nomads die all over again.

I understand how Aang feels and it’s good for him to stick to his morals and look for other options, but I also think he needs to at least understand the bigger picture that if he’s not prepared to take Ozai out, they could potentially let millions die. It’s a horrible dilemma to be in for a kid that’s barely even a teen. If anything he should accept it as a last resort. Also, Melon Lord rules all 🍉💙

@jojomuppet1820 Жыл бұрын
@@bthsr7113 That's why it should be counted as a final resort Aang will need to think about whats more important should he fail in defeating the fire lord without killing the man who would not show him or his loved ones the same amount of mercy given the faintest opening could end them all. Yes it goes against Air Nomad Religion and teachings but both spiritual balance between both human and spirit world is in Aang's hands and war does come with sacrifice should everything else fail.

I still can’t figure out how Toph can mentally make that minature Ba Sing Se that would take artists at least months to effeciently plan let alone make. Seismic sense or not, that is still highly-accurate in anatomical and constructive creative detail.

Whenever it comes down to situations of killing or not, and if there's no other way, I often recall the words of Captain Bravo: "For good or for evil! There is no shame in holding to your beliefs. My goal is to save as many people as I can, and to do that I'm even willing to kill a fellow warrior. I will be evil, if I must."

re: 17:20 Aang is the only kid of the entire group that didn't grow up under a post-genocide world still at war, and to boot he was raised by pacifist monks. His reaction is justified, but so is the others' when they've seen so much death and suffering around them their whole lives and have the continuation of that to weigh against holding back from killing 1 person (who just so happens to be incredibly responsible for much of said suffering).

For all his ego, Ozai really isn't much of a Firelord. His wife has to poison his father so he can take the throne, his daughter conquers Ba Sing Say, and we see how his policies have only served to hurt his own people. 2nd son, 2nd choice for the throne, and a 2nd rate leader.

The worst things imaginable can come from the "best of intentions" Another example is the Decepticon leader Megatron from Transformers. In a lot of depictions, Megatron was from a lower class of Cybertronians, who wanted to fight for equal rights for all of Cybertron. Look at what he became. It's a fact that Starscream of all characters bring up
