I sparred with Aaron often at the Emmanuel Community Center in Cincinnati just before he turned pro. Amazing athlete. As an amateur he ran 5 miles in the morning then at the gym after shadow boxing 10 rounds of sparring, 6 on the heavy bag, 6 on the speed bag, 6 jumping rope. Sit-ups all manner of exercises then would ask if anyone was up for a game of basketball downstairs. Nicest guy you could meet. His home was in a poverty violent area of the city. I could go on and on of my time with him. Loved the guy not a mean bone in his body outside the ring.

Pryor fought all crappy fighters, he beat an old over the hill Cervantes that still put him down, he beat Arguello nearing the end and well over his best weights, and had to cheat with Panama Lewis's stimulant bottle to do it. that's it, he never fought anyone else worth a sht. he even somehow avoided Saoul mamby the other JWW title holder during much of Prry's reign, he did not even unify the title. he turned down leonards $500,000 offer, then wanted more, turned $750,000 so leonard moved on to fight Duran at WW, Duran as he went up from LW to WW offered $750,000 Pryor's camp let the timed offer expire with no reply, WHY? they Knew Duran would wipe the floor with him, he avoided the best in boxing. Exciting yes, good fighter yes, but had terrible balance, no defense, he was the dumbest boxer in boxing, so zero ring generalship, he hit hard with both hands, but did not possess 1 punch KO power except against shitty fighters, he was short, had to use stimulants to stay afloat when hit hard, I'm from Cincinnati and worked out at both is gyms in town, was there all the time, myself and 2 other young guys were their gofers, we ran for food, pizza, drinks and things for them in the gym and late nights, I was ther for a lot of inside tak and things i saw. Pryor thought he could beat anyone in the world, but his Camp knew better, they knew his difficiencies, so protected him

As soon as you mentioned Panama Lewis as being the trainer/coach of Prior, by antennae went up because a year or so later, June of 83, Panama was accused, and later convicted of tampering with the gloves (removing padding and soaking his fight's hand-wraps with plaster of paris so his boxer was effectively fighting with rocks in his gloves.") Later still, Panama Lewis and his fighter spent 2 1/2 years in prison for the cheating assault. So, did Lewis give Pryor 'another bottle (thought to contain a fast acting stimulant?) With Lewis record of cheating, I'd bet he helped Prior regain his strength and go on to win. Pryor won the second fight, but is often the case, a boxers best chances are found in the 1st fight. Alexis was one of my all time favorites who no one could handle, I didn't want these two to ever fight one another but here you have it, The Hawk said that he loved & respected Alexis & the two became close as friends, Two of the best ever, All of the so called best in the division from Hagler to Leonard avoided Arron Pryor their entire careers.

Aaron does not get the notoriety that he deserves like a Leonard, Duran, Hearns, or Hagler. Dude was awesome.

Yeah because of Panama Lewis not because of Pryor when a known cheater is in your corner takes all the shine off the fighter

New subscriber & love it. I appreciate the hard work to put this stuff together. Born & raised in Detroit, not far from Kronk Gym, home of Tommy Hearns. Anything 70', 80's boxing is, in my opinion, the absolute best.
