I’ve heard Bowe say before in an interview that his only ambition was to be heavyweight champion. After he accomplished this goal he says that he only fought for other people and not himself. I believe there is some truth to this because if you look at his eyes and expression during his entrance for the first Holyfield fight, he’s totally engaged and serious. I never see that same look in his eyes for another fight entrance afterwards. As for Lewis, I believe Bowe wanted the fight to happen, but Lewis was too dangerous and Bowes handlers wanted to cash in on their investment. The two low risk defenses against Dokes and Ferguson made them millions.

I am glad to see someone notices this. I have said this about so many fighters. Look at Duran post Montreal. He never had that fire in his eyes again. Tyson post Spinks lost his hunger and it showed on his eyes. By the time of his Tokyo fight he actually looked bored and lethargic walking into the ring. I could go on. But the eyes tell a huge story in boxing.

I doubt that version of Douglas would be an easy fight for anyone, but I feel part of the reason he looked so dominant was because Tyson was just off. I think Lampley even said in the second round that there was talk that Tyson wasnt as sharp as he normally was. Tyson wasn't being as aggressive, wasn't throwing many punches, not throwing combinations, and had shitty defense. Douglas would have put up an amazing performance against any version of Tyson but, it would be a lot harder than it was against the best Tyson.

Another superb video Rummy.Your description of Riddick is spot on- top 10 possibly even top 5 head-to-head ability but a disappointing legacy considering his God-given talents.Damn Bowe's own lack of self- discipline, and damn that ridiculous stunt organised by Rock Newman.Dropping the WBC belt in the bin was so stupid as it permanently ruined Bowe's image. It made Riddick look cowardly but in reality Bowe was brave as hell. The courage he showed in the Golota fights was awe-inspiring. So sad that such a gifted, courageous fighter wasted his career.

Great material as usually, Rummy! But I beg it differ about a rubber match with Holyfield. You could clearly see, that there was something wrong with The Real Deal. He was completely spent after 3 rounds. George Foreman urged the referee to stop the fight about round 5. And the fact that he dropped Big Daddy in round 6, I think it not only shows you what a great warrior Evander was, but also that Bowe's finest days were past him.

Hey Rummy.. I agree with a hell of a lot of what u say about Riddick Big Daddy Bowe. He was a brilliant fighter but ballooning up between fights surely took its toll on his body. That always comes back to haunt those types of fightersimho. Ricky Hatton was another who used to balloon up out of camp. As for BOWE VS LEWIS? I believe BOWE would've beaten him if the fight had happened when it was supposed to. Bowe's combination punching was outstanding for me. I think at that time if he had treated his body better and stayed fitter then he would've beaten all the Heavyweights in the Division. Im putting Mike Tyson in that shout as well. After Tyson came back he was never the same guy. He'd lost that AURA of invincibility yrs previous. Like come on Imagine Bowe as a super fit fighting machine? He would've beat any of those Heavyweights up and the GOLOTA fights were bad looking bcos Bowe wasn't fit going into them.. Simple as that mate.. It would be so much easier for people to see the shortcoming if it where in a a more physical department, i.e. speed or power. Herbie Hide and Gonzales are I think stronger wins than he gets credit for. Gonzales was a gold medalist that had defeated both Bowe and Lewis in the amateurs, but Bowe was the only one to fight him as professionals. Herbie Hide had impressive stoppages over Bentt (who beat Tommy Morrison) and Tucker. (who went the distance with Tyson and Lewis) It's also worth noting that Bowe had amassed more victories than Lewis before his titleshot and that Lewis never actually knocked down a significantly worse version of Holyfield than the ones Bowe fought.

Bowe had problems with fighters (Holyfield, Golota) that Lewis rolled right over. Bowe always looked sluggish to me, and Lewis was anything but sluggish. Rock Newman has since claimed responsibility for Bowe not fighting Lewis, on the premise that he was "protecting" his fighter. Either way, Lewis was ranked #1 and it was the fight everyone wanted to see, so for me, he'll always be chicken Bowe. And Golota exposed the hell outta Riddick, despite losing both fights. Bowe was an exciting fighter and could have given us great fights against Lewis, or Foreman, and even Moore, etc. But Bowe was too busy on his Rock Newman world tour to keep in shape, and too busy trying to match Rocky Marciano's unbeaten streak to really take any chances. M-O-O-N, that spells BUM.

Riddick Bowe= Unfulfilled potential. Lousy resume. Ducked Lewis. Lost to him in 1988. He should have lost twice to Golota if not for Golota's bizarre series of low blows. What are his best victories? Holyfield twice-- a cruiserweight. After that? Tony Tubbs? He's definitely not even a top 10 all time champion.

If you watch both the Bowe vs Golota fights, esp the 2nd one, you'll see that Golota only threw the low blows whenever Bowe would start coming on strong.

Ru,mmys' view spot on again. If the great trainers Manny Stewart and Eddie Futch favored Lewis due to his mental toughness and physicality during the early nineties. I'd agree due to their boxing pedigree . But boxing is surprising, Bowes fluent all round skills and size are underated and unacknowledged except by boxing purists. He had the heart and mental toughness only when pushed, or he wouldn't have produced those epic fights with the great undersized Champ Holyfeild. The nineties had excellent heavyweights with all time greats in any era; Tyson, Lewis, Foreman, McCall also Galotta, Briggs, Tua, Ruddock, . Styles make fights , Bowe vs Lewis is always close , if Bowes disciplined and motivation are of stellar quality on the right night he beats everyone - just keep him out of the fridge,

I 100% agree with you Rummy, that Holyfield may have lost against Bowe, but it was such a great performance that it actually added to his legacy more. It got me thinking, what are some of the greatest "losing" performances in history. My favorite is Frazier in Manila and Gatti in the first bout with Ward

I don't see anyone other than Lennox Lewis and perhaps Larry Holmes beating a prime Riddick Bowe. If only he took boxing seriously, he was really ATG material.

Bowe should never have been inducted into the HOF... his prime was too short, he only looked great in his first victory over Holyfield. He was never in great shape again after winning the undisputed heavyweight championship. In his 3rd bout with Holyfield, Bowe looked terrible even in winning. He fought sloppy and was not in top shape. Evander was clearly hampered by contracting Hepatitis before the fight, which caused him to fatigue. Evander looked exhausted rather than hurt when Bowe KO'd him. Bowe did not have a hall of fame career.. he showed potential for greatness, but never achieved it.

I think we can know for a fact without hesitation that Lewis would have won based solely on the prediction for Bowe by rummy, Who don't know shit about boxing....

Bowe lacked an elite jab to be a real threat to the other great HWs imo. Holyfield is a shorter fighter as well, so to use their first fight to show how he would compete with better boxers than Holyfield is not making me a believer of his skills. He's top 20 head to head, i think he loses to the top ten. Imagine Holmes jab vs Holyfield or Bowe, he'd not know what to do. I think both Klits do him, AJ, Fury, Tua, Ike, a lot more. I've never seen him on the backfoot, so walking into Tua or Ike would end badly for Bowe. Klits have power and speed to hurt him, A.J. does, Fury toys with him.

Saying Bowe beat Golota is a bit of a stretch. Sure, he won both fights, but only because Golota got himself disqualified. Andrew Golota was beating Bowe soundly both times before the low blows.

I remember when this happened and the American media totally made It seem like Bowe clowned Lennox by trashing the belt. And being 13-14 years old i bought it hook, line, an sinker. And it did work in his favor short term. Atleast to uninformed casuals like me at the time. Of course hindsight and maturity have changed my mind.

The first fight Evander barely weighed 200 lbs to Bowe 235. That's alot of muscle weight to give up. Bowe always outweighed him by 30 lbs or more and even lost the 2nd fan man fight. It does seem he ducked men his own size with skills to fight michael dokes or boogeyman. Out of all the fights he could have made those were the ones he did make. Golotta beat him badly twice and seemed to show that Bowe was really only good against much smaller men. He then retired. Golotta and bowe fought 7 months after Bowe stopped Evander.

The whole era was dominated by the myth of Tyson and the corruption of the promoters. There were some incredible athletes, but they were all hamstrung in one way or another. Take Frank Bruno for example. He basically had to gift (like a good little boy) his wbc belt to Tyson, at a ridiculously disrespectful price. The sport stinks, but we all love it.

When you say nobody saw Lennox as a champ when Bowe threw his belt to garbage, and that he was in all the media and shows. I don't know what's questionable about it, he is american, and american media always favor their fighters, that doesn't mean for a second that he could be Lennox at any time of his life, because Lennox was just superior fighter. Lennox had trouble with concentration, and underestimated his opponents, that's why he lost 2 times.

I think people need to stop judging a boxer by their best day. You aren't "great" if your peak lasted one fight. Bowe may have beaten Holyfield twice, but they were both in decline for the second win, and he was never as good as he was in the first fight ever again. He was NOT a great champion, but he was A champion. I have to disagree that Holyfield's best fight was the first fight with Bowe as well, he was fighting the fight his opponent wanted.
