Vernon "The Viper" Forrest was an outstanding boxer, and more importantly, an outstanding human outside the ring. He co-founded the non-profit group home, "Destiny's Child," that assists people with developmental, emotional, and psychological disabilities and needs. If you want to see the gold standard on how to throw a straight right, look no further than Vernon "The Viper" Forrest. I doubt I'll ever come to understand how he lost TWICE to Mayorga, because it still doesn't add up. A gracious man with a heart of gold, the tragic loss of Vernon Forrest is still felt today. Rest in peace, Vernon, Godspeed.

Augusta, GA 706 in the house! An AUG legend! We love you and we miss you, Vernon. One of the legit kindest people I’ve ever met in my lifetime. He had such an impact on me and many others. They don’t make them like The Viper anymore. He’s a Hall of Famer in my book. He still had a lot of great fights left in him, tragically cut short. RIP Vernon!

He was. He was so risky that the champs would not fight him unless he was a mandatory. And fighters like Darryl Coley would not fight him. Coley told me himself that he would not fight Vernon for less than six figures.

I'm not a huge Oscar fan, but the guy would fight anyone and has resume comparable to Holyfield. He fought prime versions of Quartey, Vargas, Trinadad, Mosley (2), Mayorga, Mayweather, Pac. He also fought ATG greats outside of their prime in Hopkins, Sweat Pea, and Chavez

Vernon was too long and his punches were too well thrown for Shane to counter. He was a problem for Shane but Mayorga was an issue for Vernon. Funny how styles make fights.

Vernon was a better fighter than history might remember unless explicitly thinking of him but he doesn’t get mentioned among the great greats, and though I understand why he dominated Shane Mosley who was considered the best at that time. I really would have liked to see him fight Mayweather because Floyd always enjoyed a reach advantage that he wouldnt have had against Vernon and that would have been very interesting. Unlike Paul Williams who kept his guard too low, Vernon was technically sound and would have been a problem for anyone in his prime. He was still getting it done and a champion at age 38 & looked like he was only getting better in some ways and had many good years left.
