Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello I
-
Aaron Pryor defends his WBA Light Welterweight Championship of the World against Alexis Arguello. The fight had been given alot of media attention and was considered a sure Fight of the Year winner. The fight didn't disappoint, but it didn't get Fight of the Year, however it got ranked #8 in the 100 Greatest Fights of all time by Ring Magazine in 1996. The fight also had some controversy, as 'Panama' Lewis, the trainer of Pryor requested a specific bottle of which Pryor was to drink from; 'The one that I mixed'. The fight ended in the next round, and no urin test was administered by the Miami Boxing Commision after the bout. Because of this, they had a rematch 10 months later.
-
Their records at the time
Aaron Pryor: 31-0
Alexis Arguello: 77-5

I've been watching a lot of the old super fights lately, and this one very well be my favorite. Considering the pace of it and how many big punches both guys absorb, it's amazing that it made it into the 14th round. It's not quite a slugfest because there's some really good boxing in here, but man is it fun to watch. Every match should have this kind of give-and-take.

@SWP 215 No, it didn't. Arguello had already been through so many wars, while Pryor had been crushing cans with Lewis probably feeding him the bottle even then. Arguello already had 3 and 1/2 modern careers worth of brain damage before the first fight, nevermind after. The first fight put the nail in the casket. This fight is a lot like Hagler vs Mugabi, Chavez vs Taylor 1, or Oliver McCall vs Bruce Seldon --- it shows you what one really bad beating can do to a fighter.

So much speculation on that. I watched this fight in real time when I was 14. I remember Panama Lewis yelling "the one I mixed". I watched this amazing fight live on a Friday night, beginning what would be an historic turning point weekend in professional boxing. If I recall correctly, Arguello was semiconscious for about fifteen or twenty minutes on the ring floor after the 14th round pounding he received from Pryor, and may have ended up with a concussion. The very next day on Saturday afternoon, I watched the other amazing fight live when, in ANOTHER 14th round pounding, Ray Mancini delivered a straight right hand to Duk Koo Kim, from which Kim died a few days later due to a brain hemorrhage I believe. That’s when boxing associations began reducing the number of rounds in matches, probably a wise step, though some referees became somewhat overzealous in protecting fighters from similar fates, which resulted in a number of fights stopped earlier than necessary. Still, for me, that was a golden era of boxing.

RIP Aaron Pryor!!! You broke my heart twice as a kid by beating Arguello but my respect to both for the courage, heart, and skill shown in the first fight. It takes special men to endure 40 minutes of hell with that type of pace and punching power, certainly one of top fights of the 20th century. Both gone too soon to keep preaching new generations about the king of contact sports.

"I've got a contract for you to fight Roberto Duran for $750,000." Madison Square Garden April, 1981. John Condon, President of Madison Square Garden Boxing, said that the Garden had offered Duran $750,000 to fight Aaron Pryor of Cincinnati there in early April. "No, I don't want to fight him. My new attorney told me not to sign anything until you and I work out a new contract." So much for the firing of LaRosa. By the time they worked out a new agreement, the chance to fight Duran-and the $750,000 payday-was gone. The new contract covered 6 yrs; LaRosa's share was cut to 1/3 & he no longer had any ancillary rights. Expenses were to come off the top. "The ink wasn't even dry on the damn contract," says LaRosa, "when I found out Aaron had signed a 1-yr promotional contract with King, who was going to give him a $100,000 bonus. Then King sent me the contract to sign. I told Aaron it was a mistake, but if that was what he wanted, then I'd sign. "Aaron said, 'But King is going to get me a Duran fight, a Mamby fight, because he's got Duran & Mamby.' Link to a New York Times Newspaper article about the Duran-Pryor Fight & offers made - www.nytimes.com/1981/01/30/sports/garden-offers-bout-to-duran.htmlHe signed to fight WBC Super LW Champ, Mamby in a bout for $1 mil. The bout was for 2/7/1981. the fight fell apart when the promoter, Harold Smith, disappeared amid allegations that he was involved in a $21.3 mil fraud against Wells Fargo. Smith, whose real name was Ross Fields, was later sentenced to ten years in prison after he was convicted of 29 counts of fraud and embezzlement. In October 1983, Pryor said he would not defend the WBA Jr WW Title against Johnny Bumphus, the No. #1 contender, & sent the WBA a letter announcing his retirement. Robert Buechner, his attorney, said, "I think that it's correct to say he would certainly reconsider his decision to retire if there's someone on the scene he thought had the same marketability & fighting ability he has." Officially, Pryor was stripped of the title. LaRosa, founder of LaRosa's Pizzeria/Cincinnati, Ohio was Pryor's manager, but was left out & cut out most of the time, especially after Pryor signed with King, Here are a few insights from me, I spent many days in Pryor's Gym, I lived in Cinci, my entire Life, & worked out at the 2nd Gym, where he moved to downtown, I only missed 1 Pro Fight in person, & saw 40% of his Amateur fights, & many sparring & Training sessions, & talked to him & everyone in his camp on many occasions, & got to see a ton of behind the scenes things, that were said & done, here is my own personal thoughs on Pryor. & then some Reviews of how he would do against some top guys. First of all, yes he was an amazingly exciting fighter to watch, very entertaining, a non-stop offense, Now as for Defense, well, except for good head bobbing & weaving, his only other defense was an all out offense, he was short, a disadvantage, he had short arms, he was always off balance when throwing most of those 100s of punches, even Leonard worked with him, several times to help with that balance, it did not help as he went right back to his old self, He Did not Possess 1 Punch KO Power, he hit very hard with both hands, that's a big difference, his accumulation of hard shots, set up his knockouts, His Chin, I've read in many posts around the net, people say he had a steel, Chin, that's a Joke, & a comment only made by people that do not know Boxing or Pryor, he had a very, suspect Chin, I can't remember all the guys that put him down, Kameda, Kim, Johnson, young, Cervantes & others, the problem is, none of those guys had 1 PUnch KO Power, nor were they even known as power guys, some of them hit hard, they just did not possess enough skills to keep him down, once they knocked him down, whom in his entire career, did he ever fight as a Pro that was good, Cervantes was finished, but still put him down, in his Prime, he keeps him down, Arguello was no JWW, & well over his best weights, & nearing the end of a great Career, & Pryor & Panama Lewis had to cheat to beat him, or I believe Arguello wins, he definitely wins at LW where they should have fought, Pryor was ranked top 3 at LW at one time, & soon they would have had to give him a Title Shot, but his people ran him as fast as they could to a Depleted & weak JWW Division, the LW Division was loaded at that time and many more good fighters coming into the top 10 soon, Pryor never fought any of them, & never fought anyone with Power, WHY? Because his people & everyone in his whole camp knew, he stood and excellent chance of being knocked out with anyone with Power, they avoided every last one of them, he also managed to never fight Sauol Mamby who was ranked #1 at JWW during much of Pryor's reign, he had no power, but was a Solid Boxer, I think they avoided him, he would not fight an up an coming Johnny Bumphus at JWW, he turned down Leonard & Let Duran's offer expire, so Pryor's Camp, maybe not he himself, but his people avoided anyone they could, because they were that worried he would lose against a top guy, they wanted him to get good solid paydays against nobodies & remain Champ, so they could continue to rip him off & Live off him, behind the scenes. Also it was widely known around Pryor's Gym & Camp, & everyone like myself, that he rarely if ever went into a Bout, without being high on Drugs, half the time, his people would Joke at the Gym days after a Win, that he didn't even know or remember whom he fought or if he had even won, he seemed to fight like a Wild Animal & at his best when on Drugs, & they knew it, so they kept him that way, for fights. The only Fight I knew that he was not on something was the Young Fight, next, he had no Ring Generalship, had ZERO fight intelligence, he was uneducated & in fact, just plain Dumb kid, he barely could hold a conversation with u about anything, until after he retired & got clean of his addictions. For all of those Reasons, Pryor Could never beaten most of the top Fighters of his time. Here are some that beat him, because they had real power. 1. Duran 2. Gonzalez 3. Hearns 4. O'Grady 5. SRL, 6. Rosario 7. Chavez 8. Tsyzu 9. Cervantes in his Prime 10. Arguello at LW, & even JWW if they had not cheated with the Magic bottle of elixir 11. Andy Ganigan had one of the biggest Punches at LW, he is nowhere near the fighter, but he has a shot with that 1 Punch KO Power, 12. Benitez by UD 13. Mancini before the Kim fight would have been an Ohio Boy's War, flip a coin, Mancini had good power an had an excellent shot to win.He does not have 1 good Fighter on his resume, look at Arguello, he was an all time great YES, but nearing the end of a great career, & well over his best weight, but still came close to winning it, & Cervantes was at the end, that’s it, Pryor ran from a Packed LW division, to a shitty JWW one, he even somehow managed to avoid fighting the #1 contender at JWW for most of his reign in Saoul Mamby, how that happened I don't know, he never fought 1 good fighter in their Prime his entire career. what if he stayed at LW, he was ranked in top 3 there, what if, Pryor vs. Mancini, Blake, Gonzalez, Ganigan, Duran, Argueillo, Rosario, Arroyo, Frias, Watt, Davis Jr., O'Grady, Kenty, Dejesus, Espana, Bramble, & he conevniently waited till Benitez left JWW to move up, all those what if fights, he should have & could have won many, if not most, but any of those guys with power could have hit him & ended it, whether he was better or not, Like Ganigan, if Andy hits him & I think he has a solid shot at it, before Pryor takes him out, Andy KO's him, but I Still would like to have seen it happen, also he could have eventually Faced Bumphus, Chavez, Warren, McGirt, Paul, & others, he avoided Hearns, Leonard & Duran, also Haley, he never fought anyone.

Growing up I can only remember two occasions where my father and I "bonded." Nothing bad between us, just different kinds of people. Anyhow, the first was when he took me out of school to go to the last game of the 1969 World Series. The other was after my Mom died. Dad and I watched this fight on TV, and is probably the best fight I've seen. During the fight, Dad said this was the way most fights looked back in the '40s. He def had Pryor drink a mixed water substance before the KO rd. Check out the doc Assault in the RIng. After seeing that...theres no question that Pryor had something in that water. 1. Why wait until the 14th round, almost at the end of a fight, to give that kind of drugs to your boxer when he could be knocked out before 2. What kind of substance takes less than 2 minutes after ingestion to make such a big difference in a fight? Name one. 3. Pryor fought 40 times in the pros, won 39 including 35 by knock out. Let's not pretend the man couldn't punch. When you don't want to give credit to a man, you can find 60 reasons not to.

Go play make believe in your journal..Ha!😏

Aaron Pryor: You was my favorite fighter in the early 80's. Even though my friends said you were a"paper champion" I knew better. And when we watched you "dismantle" Alexis Arvuello (Another favorite of mine). You became some of their favorites and won me $1500 that night. Not bad for a 15 year old kid, huh? So I say :Thank you. God Bless you. And May you rest in Peace.:

The Hawk didnt get much credit for anything but this was a great fight. Those were great rights thrown by Arguello and he hurt Pryor on a couple of occasions but never went in for the kill because Pryor was so good at faking like he wasn't hurt. RIP both of these great fighters.

Arguello was out on his feet at the end of the 13th round. He wasn't defending himself well late in the 13th, and Pryor's last punch in the 13th got through without Arguello reacting to block it. In the last round, even though Arguello was punching, he was fighting from memory, his senses weren't there at all. Pryor could see that Arguello was vulnerable, so he went after him with everything. The referee waited far too long to stop the fight. I was yelling for the ref to stop the fight before the last series of 5 or 6 punches. Arguello wasn't strong the entire round, and the first big punch in the last sequence was enough to end the fight. Arguello took 5 more hard punches after that first solid shot, then he was totally defenseless and the ref allowed Pryor about 6 more free shots with Arguello totally defenseless. It's very fortunate that Arguello recovered; fighters have died from less punishment than Arguello took.

***** I will look, I didn't notice it before. I was really concerned about his safety that night. he was one of the all time best fighters, but he's a rather thin guy and he could have been very seriously hurt. He didn't look good laying there, very scary to see. Thanks Gabriel, I'll watch it again for that elbow. Peace to you and your loved ones,........God bless you all.

***** Are you referring to middle of the 14th round,........at 43:51 in the video? Pryor landed a right and then a left, then arguello's head went down a little and it looked like there may have been a clash of heads. I really don't think their heads hit, I think the camera angle just made it look like they did. I can't be sure though,......you may be right. I watched the 13th round to the end of the fight again, and arguello didn't block a single punch, especially the entire 14th round. Pryor must have thrown 30 or more punches in the first minute of the 14th round, and about 10 or 12 hit arguello solid. Even a jab was snapping arguello's head back. I'm convinced he was almost out on his feet when he staggered back to his corner after the 13th round. He got off that solid right hand in the 14th, but pryor took it like a mosquito bite and that was basically the last chance for arguello. After that hard punch, pryor landed 3 solid jabs in a row, each snapped arguello's head back. Arguello could only float his jab and his right hand out towards pryor, ; usually after a big punch like arguello tagged pryor with in the 14th round, you would expect to see arguello follow it up and go after pryor. Instead, pryor hit him with those 3 jabs, and arguello had absolutely nothing to give in return. The fight was over right then, and pryor saw that arguello was weakened and not reacting to block any punches. That's why he suddenly turned it up a notch and landed 2 right/left combinations. Then, that solid right had arguello falling back into the ropes, and pryor went right after him and hit him with 10 or more solid punches. The ref waited too long by about 4 or 5 punches, but it's a tough call to make in a championship fight. If he was paying close attention he should have sensed that arguello was already unsturdy and ready to go with any real hard shot. Thankfully, Arguello recovered. In the 2nd fight arguello made an important change that helped him, even though it wasn't enough ultimately. He was waiting too long in the first fight, searching for the chance to land a big right hand. That was his style and it was very effective for him, but not against a guy that has more power and wouldn't stop punching. When arguello waited , it played into pryor's game because he could keep punching unchallenged. Arguello tried to turn it up and punch with pryor in the 2nd fight, but he didn't have the fire power and couldn't stand up under pryors' stronger shots. Pryor was just too strong for arguello, his only chance would have been to hit pryor early, before he was fully warmed up, with a big right hand and then follow it up. ....They were both great fighters,..............R.I.P. Alexis,......you were a great champion.......

Verdaderos guerreros!!

+Joshwaaaaaaa You obviously don't know what you are talking about otherwise you wouldn't have made such a ludicrous statement. McCallum, Leonard, Julian Jackson, Terry Norry, Ray Robinson, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, Wilfred Benitez, prime De la hoya, Whitaker etc would have beaten Mayweather at welterweight or light - middleweight. But Mayweather would have ducked every one of them therefore it's pointless even discussing it. And you are obviously cluelesss, a troll or 10 - years - old therefore I don't even know why I am wasting my time explaining things to you. I also think the Morales and Barrera that Pacquiao beat at super - featherweight would beat Mayweather at super - featherweight; Morales beat the young version of Pacquiao in their first encounter. And Ali, prime Foreman, Tyson, Holmes, Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Tyson etc would destroy today's heavtweights. The standard of boxing has decreased in the past few years anyone who thinks otherwise obviously don't know what they are talking about. Sport generally has gotten worse in the past few years. And the 42 - year - old Foreman went the distance with prime Holyfield in 1991 and then beat Holyfield's conqueror in ten rounds in 1994 when Foreman was 45 - years - old years. Whereas the 34 - year - old Holyfield stopped the 30 - year - old Tyson in the 11th round in 1996 and then beat Tyson by a three - round disqualification the following year. Whereas the 32 - year - old Muhammad Ali beat the 25 - year - old, 40-0-0 (37 knockouts) Foreman - who wasted Frazier and Norton in two rounds - in eight rounds in 1974 which was the only time Foreman was ever beaten inside the distance as a professional; was also the first time Foreman was floored as a professional. Michael Johnson ran 19.32 seconds in the 200m in 1996 and 43.18 seconds in the 400m in 1999 and Carl Lewis who competed in sprinting from the early 1980's to the early 1990's would have beaten Johnson at 200m ;-). George Foreman would still have only been in his early thirties in the early 1980's if he had still been competing. Mike McCallum was almost 30 - years - old when he stopped Julian Jackson in two rounds in 1986; Jackson stopped Terry Norris in 1989. Roy Jones Jr. who is arguably the best pound - for - pound fighter in history beat Bernard Hopkins by a unaimous decision at middleweight in 1994 and beat the unbeaten James Toney by a unanimous decision in their 1994 super - middleweight encounter. Jones went 34-0-0 before losing his first fight by a disqualification to Montel Griffin in 1997 before destroying Griffin in one round in their 1998 rematch. Jones never lost another fight until his 51st fight therefore he could conceivably have been 50-0-0 excluding the disqualification loss against Griffin. And Jones was also robbed of an Olympic gold medal in 1988.

I agree that Ali, Tyson , Foreman etc would beat today's heavyweights. What is happening with today's heavyweights is that they are taking advantage of a stupid division, one that sets no upper limit on weight. Klitchsko for example only needs half the skill of his opponents when he is 40 pounds heavier and 5 inches taller. He need only stay on the outside. There is currently a dirth of skill in the heavyweight division. The same is not true of the lower weights. I do not agree that Morales and Barrera would beat Mayweather at featherweight. The hypothetical scenario is difficult to imagine, in any event , non-sensical even. To the first responder, to suggest that these techniques are non-existent today is patently absurd. For example you would be implying that Gennady Golovkin does not know how to cut the ring off or that Roman Gonzalez and Ringondeaux do not know how to trap set. You seem to be a casual for the suggestion. The reason you see less cutting off is because that is used in a more come forward style, however, boxing has in general become more defensive. It has become more defensive because that is more effective. For example, combination punches can be extremely damaging however from a defensive aspect they are inherently flawed because they increase your length of exposure. This small realisation has led to more potshotting in general.

Joshua , if boxing has evolved how come the sugar rays , Ali and Joe Louis's of this world are still considered the greatest and haven't been surpassed? And I don't believe Floyd can go 12 wit Ray Robinson or Leonard. Boxing evolving is not having a dead heavyweight division for around 15 years. Today's fighters ain't as tough as before, that's partly why they more defensive, some don't dare to be great.

Good work here Joshua - well thought out and thorough - love the argument about combination punching since I left boxing ions ago to pursuit a more lucrative path, I haven't been able to stay relevant in the current saga of boxers but i would agree with those who say that athletics in general have evolved with the technology to improve body strength, endurance, science to maximize workouts and better overall understanding of sports science enhanced by computer technology to crunch statistics and recycle the information into training. Nevertheless there is always a phenomenon in any sport and in boxing there are also a few and the argument that was handed to you had to do with at least one phenomenon and that was Foreman. The others mentioned such as Roy Jones and McCallum aren't actually unusual since what they did has occurred in every era. But some of your arguments are eye openers -- I admit I need to dig deeper to verify whether there is any credibility in it but it does lend itself to some queries that at least I will explore. I would love to see someone pick this up from the socio-economic perspective since it can be argued that Golovkin bears the resemblance of great fighters from the past. Those that came from very humble beginnings and sought to fight their way out of their environs. Some disdained their work and other revealed in it and here there seems to be the common thread that both did it to escape the poverty that awaited them. Here there seems to be a lot that has gone unsaid and it could be worth a deeper dive. Or even the perspective of the death of the Afro-American dominance as it relates to incarceration, drug abuse in black communities, and the decline of boxing facilities in inner city communities. These are more relevant factor I would think then the difficult comparison between eras of boxing. I don't have the time yet but perhaps it something you can look into. You seem to have the skills and interest.
