In England its almost an unwritten law for school kids to know at least eight songs from this great musical!! Somewhere in any corner there you can here a little Olive or Oliver pleading "Where is love? And don't get them started on Fagin, he is universally adored no matter who sings the part!!

I can't speak for anyone else, but as a child, I loved the hell out of this song the first time I heard it. Same as "What's the Use of Wond'rin'" from Carousel. And so many others. I wonder if gays are so used to being told (either subliminally or straight to our faces) that they are not worthy of love or even of living that I latched onto songs like this. The whole idea that no matter what he does, I will love him, in the hopes that the same is true for me. Just thinking when I should be going to sleep, LOL.

As long as he needs me Oh, yes, he does need me In spite of what you see I'm sure that he needs me Who else would love him still When they've been used so ill? He knows I always will As long as he needs me I miss him so much when he is gone But when he's near me I don't let on The way I feel inside The love I have to hide The hell! I've got my pride As long as he needs me He doesn't say the things he should He acts the way he thinks he should But all the same I'll play this game His way... As long as he needs me I know where I must be I'll cling on steadfastly As long as he needs me As long as life is long I'll love him right or wrong And somehow I'll be strong As long as he needs me If you are lonely Then you will know When someone needs you You love them so I won't betray his trust Though people say I must I've got to stay true, just As long as he needs me

I discovered Aaron right here, looking for differents vertions of this absolute wonderfull song. First reaction was of recognition just because of him choosing what was understood as a song for women performers and doing it without changes to become it suitable for a man. My second thought was of admiration as I thought he was a gay man openly assuming that and giving a new dimention to the song itself. Not much time ago I discovered he was not and it hightened my admiration for his freedom at the moment of singing whatever he likes. This being said, I think this vertion of the song is one of the best I've the chance of enjoying: the minimal gesticulation, the crescendo in his voice, I think he nails it. Big fan of Aaron since then. He does everything brilliant. I hope one day he can sing Anthony Newly songs What kind of fool am I and Where can I turn to, two absolute masterpieces deserving new life. Sorry everyone for my poor english.
