Hypothetically, if we were to get non-video game characters in Smash, I would want them to still be characters that are significant to the history of gaming in some way; such as Popeye (the original intended star of what would become Donkey Kong, plus his spinach power-up inspired Pac-Man's power pellets), James Bond (the star of the first majorly successful FPS on console), and yes, even Goku. (with Dragon Ball, alongside Fist of The North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, heavily inspiring the fighting genre as we know it today) Characters such as Shrek or SpongeBob, who haven't had any serious impact on gaming history, would NOT fit the bill.

To be fair I'm not sure if this is as much of an issue now. Mortal Kombat 11 has used the likenesses actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone for their iconic characters. I do know however that the James Bond rights can get very tricky.

I read somewhere that a Monster Hunter was originally going to be the final character of the first fighter pass and they were going to be the originator of the weapon swapping mechanic, but for some reason they were scrapped mid-development and their assets were repurposed for Byleth. I can't find the source, but I believe it because many of Byleth's animations look like they're ripped straight from Monster Hunter.

It also said Sora was gonna be the last character in the fighter’s pass but got scrapped because negotiations with Disney fell through. Sakurai and the Smash team then just took what they had made for Monster Hunter and used it to make Byleth. EDIT: Welp, looks like they worked something out in the end.

Source? "Classic Sonic" wasn't a thing until 2011, there wasn't an established difference before Generations, there was just Sonic in differing artstyles. And the Sonic in the game itself doesn't really have a Megadrive-focused moveset: he uses mostly attacks from Sonic The Fighters (an arcade game), original attacks that use Sonic's main abilities and a couple individual references to both the classic games (like the spin charge) and the Adventure games (like the other spin dash and the homing attack)

If any of these scrapped fighters have the chance to be a new character in Ultimate, I think the most likely one is Ayumi Tachibana. The only thing really hold her back in Melee was the fact that her games were not released outside of Japan. But now, not only are they available world wide, but even remastered for the Switch! Not only is her limitation gone, but it would be an easy way for Nintendo to make money by advertising her in Smash since she's a 1st party character. They've done it before (biggest examples being Corrin & Byleth), so if they don't do it here, they'd just be leaving money on the table.

When I was young playing Melee I think it was on Flat Zone specifically, the characters' shadows would be polygonal and I would look at the shadow and visualize how they would've looked in 64 (specifically Mewtwo, really wanted to see him in it) by filling in the details mentally. Of course if Bowser WAS in 64 I'd much rather him have that one silly model... which is why I love the Smash Remix romhack!

He throws papers, points at people, sneezes on them, trips and it trips his opponents too, calls on a giant judge to slam his gavel on them, summons his assistant as a shield, breaks defenses with his Magatama... but above all, he shouts "Objection!" and indicts everyone in court for their crimes. If Sakurai and team really want him in Smash, they already have inspiration. I'm just not as hopeful as most other fans. If he even gets to be a Mii costume, that's already a huge win imo.

@@PeruvianPotato They've managed to create and program a fully constructed moveset to a potted plant with fangs, a plastic Nintendo peripheral toy that operates on its own (sort of), a 2D LCD man with limited animation, a mannequin-esque yoga instructor, and an inflatable living balloon-like creature who's singing that can make people fall sleep. In other words none of the them look like fighting game character potential and yet they managed to pull it off. Therefore the Smash Bros. developers can clearly come up with a moveset for practically for *any* video game character.

The most likely reason why the forbidden 7 characters in brawl were cut was time constraints. Sakurai even said that he had a lot of characters planned, but were scrapped due to time constraints. It also didn't help that those characters were low priority. Going by what Sakurai said and the unused files in Brawl, I'm assuming it's the forbidden 7 and maybe even more is what Sakurai is referring to. Aside from Dixie Kong, there has been sources back during the leak group on why Mewtwo and Roy were cut aside from being low priority and time constraints. Roy was cut due to not only being a low priority character, but he was also cut because there were more interesting choices than him and due to only certain amount of time that the development team had. As for Mewtwo, well when he was ported over from Melee, he was pretty glitchy and filled with technical issues. This could explain why in Smash 4 Mewtwo had different hitboxes with the same moveset. Because of Mewtwo's poor design from Melee, the team even could not easily recreate Mewtwo using Melee assets unlike the other characters from Melee. Sure, they could've created from scratch, but I'm guessing the team thought it wasn't worth it or wasn't motivated enough. After all, he is a difficult character to develop. Plus, it doesn't help the fact that 60% of the development was focused on the SSE. Still since Mewtwo and Roy were beloved characters, they stayed in longer during development than the other 5. It just so happened that certain circumstances push them out of the running. Again, I would take this grain of salt because it's is NOT confirmed, but it is interesting to think about. But, we can definitely say that the forbidden 7 were cut due to time and how the development was stacking up. I like how the three characters in the thumbnail each represent one of the three ways fighters have been scrapped: Geno = Characters who were considered, but seemingly dropped before any real work was done on them. Dixie Kong = Characters who were worked on, but never actually made it to the final roster. Remnants of their code can often still be found in the game files of the retail release. Dr. Mario = Characters who made official debuts as fighters, but were cut from the final roster of at least one subsequent Smash game (Brawl, in Dr. Mario's case.)

I remember back in 6th grade, my friend and I would always talk Smash 64 and we'd try to guess who would be in the sequel whenever it would come out. My wish and still to this day wish for the Double Dragons. Their move sets are basically Smash ready and there'd be two characters with a simple color pallet swap. My friend would try to get Paperboy in the game but I always objected because I just couldn't picture a dude on a bike fighting other people...Sadly it doesn't look like Billy and Jimmy Lee will ever make it to Smash.

James Bond of course was tied to the Movie Publisher, so of course not unless Nintendo organized something. Banjo Kazooie, we know that RARE was with Nintendo at that point in time but when Melee was released, RARE was looking for a buyer and when Nintendo refused to buy the company 100% (they had 49% to 51% at the time) then it was Microsoft who in 2002 brought RARE to own 100% of the company. It was a miracle for Banjo Kazooie to even be in Smash Ultimate as a DLC character.

Kind of surprised that you didn't bring up Sakurai's alternative choices for FF reps in Smash 4. Knowing he has said if he couldn't get Tetsuya Nomura's permission for using Cloud. Then he would've personally went with Terra or Bartz instead. Though at the same time Nomura brought up Noctis and Lightning and initially thought Sakurai wanted them thinking they were relevant at the time. There was an interview about this.

I didn't hear this on your list, but Sakurai was hearing a lot of demand to include Saki Amamiya from Sin and Punishment. To quote the Smash Dojo blog from Brawl, "He rivals just about any main character. There were many requests from users for his inclusion, and he IS pretty cool, so I did what I could to include him." I lowkey wish we got Alucard instead of the Belmonts. Sure, he'd be another anime swordfighter (doubly redundant for his resemblance to Sephiroth) but Symphony of the Night is such a masterpiece that I'd love to have seen it get represented in the roster.

That original vote list is really interesting. Toad and Mew at least appear in Smash games via Peach/Daisy and Pokeballs respectively. James Bond is the only one in the top 10 that has no appearance in the Smash series. If a “4th party” character was ever chosen, I would hope it’s Bond. Just given the legacy and how out of left field it would be. Characters like Goku and Shrek have been mentioned so often, it might not even be that shocking if they ever did make it (which I don’t think will ever happen IMO)

We’d probably also have Nakajima instead of or along with Joker, who would be universally panned as “another sword fighter” (For those who don’t know, Megami Tensei, which is the main franchise Persona belongs in was originally a video game adaptation of a book called Digital Devil Story. This is not to be confused with Digital Devil Saga, those are very different games with a homage as the title. By the second Megami Tensei game, the franchise basically became its own thing and we got Shin Megami Tensei out of it. The games were huge mostly in Japan like how Hero was more liked there. Also, Megami Tensei is the first ever monster catching franchise, not game. Nethack is technically the first game with it, but that only got remakes and never blossomed into a full on series.)

If memory serves, for the Final Fantasy rep, Sakurai had considered Terra and Bartz. Terra for her prominent SNES character status, and Bartz because Sakurai thought the class mastery/change system would be interesting. But ultimately picked Cloud because let's be real that makes the most sense. I dunno where I saw that interview though... So it could have been made up.

I encountered this weird glitch when I play Smash 4. So whenever I look at the hoard for trophies (where you can see them all laid out) I’ll find a trophy that looks sorta like a toon version of Excite-Bike. But when I look at the gallery, (where you can look at one trophy at a time) I can never find it. I’ve called it “Excite-Bike’s Revenge” since he was scraped from the early roster. Does anyone have any info on this?

i may have gotten a joke flown by my head, but have you checked to see if you have an excite biker trophy that uses a flat sprite directly from excite bike? it may be that trophy, but due to him being tiny and screen resolution stuff, it might blur it a bit to appear like a cartoon-y version.

You forgot to mention that before Sakurai was given the ok from Square Enix to use Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII for Smash for WiiU and 3DS, he was originally conceptualizing Terra Branford from Final Fantasy VI.
