@@AaronRash Doesn't the tone sound something between either a Fender Jazzmaster Pickup (or Telecaster Bridge Pickup) and a Gibson P90? That seems fairly accurate. There's a lot more said below about Mosrite Pickups that should give some insight: Those photos of Mosrite pickups (3:54) are of early 1970s models that were made simpler and with dental putty to hold them in the casing (that's the seafoam green color,) they're not of Mark V type pups. I took the casing off one of mine (Mark V style pickups) to check what they're like (though I have replicas made by a former Mosrite employee, Ed Elliott, pictured at 1:49 on the right. He still makes Mosrite style instruments under his own name, along with pickups.) These MK V pups have 2 Alnico V magnets in the center with a piece of wood between them, then they're wound with either AWG 43 or AWG 44 to about 10k - 10.5k bridge and 8k - 8.5k neck in original spec (mine were wound hotter.) They're not potted, so they can give lots of feedback at high volume, as heard in early Ramones concerts up to mid or late summer 1979, which is about the time John switched the stock bridge pickup to a Dimarzio. (Not that John frequently used the same model live, though, he didn't.) Mosrite Pickups of the variety with the pole pieces (on Ventures models and others) also get confused with P90s often enough, but they're not the same thing, they're 4/10ths of an inch shorter. These Mark V Pickups should have the same outer dimensions as those on a Ventures model. Oh, and (going by pictures of the making of a replica pickup,) the original pickups in Johnny Ramone's preferred model are the same thing inside as Mark V pickups. They just have a narrower casing size.

@@mj.l It seems that the early Vintage fanaticism started in the early to mid 1980s, but it wasn't as big, and was mostly after Fenders and Gibsons and maybe Rickenbackers. Kurt just used what was cheap in the late 80s - early 90s, and Mosrite was often enough cheap along with the 70s Univox Hi Flyers (highly Mosrite inspired) and the Epiphone ET-270. When The B-52s started in 1976 - 1978, they weren't using the expensive new gear. Ricky had 2 Mosrite Mark Vs and a Silvertone 1448, and Kate played a 1966 - 1967 Gibson Les Paul (SG shape) which got replaced with a 1970s Epiphone ET-290 (an import.) Ricky got 2 more Mosrites in (seemingly) 1978 and 1979, one being a double neck. (He used many tunings live, a total of 6 by mid 1979, and he had to switch tunings quickly.) Dave Gregory of XTC also was into older guitars, he has a collection of various instruments, and had said that he got into vintage instruments ahead of the curve. He has a 1963 Strat, 1965 Gibson SG Standard, 1960 Gibson ES-335TD-SV, 1964 Gibson Firebird I, and many others. But why? Were they just that much cheaper then, that it was so much more welcoming? Seemingly. So far as I've heard, the 1970s did not have a market for 1950s - 1960s instruments. If it was *used,* it was *used.* And the 1970s have some reputation for quality errors with Fenders, along with Gibson trying new things in the same decade. Perhaps they're not all "terrible," but they do have some sort of a shoddy reputation (and at the same time, new cars also had the "malaise era," but that's another topic.)

There are a lot of reasons for that. *(1:)* Semie Moseley wasn't the best at business, he was better at Lutherie. *(2:)* The Necks on these *_1960s_* models are very thin width, and it can take some adjustment, if your fingers aren't too big. (The early 1970s models widened the fretboard, but even then, not everyone likes the necks on those.) *(3:)* Stock frets on the *_1960s_* models are much lower than you'd expect, and so you touch the fretboard much more easily, so you can't bend strings easily unless you're using thin strings. People in the 60s often still used thicker strings. I had a set of 13s on mine set to E Standard (I liked a lot of things that The B-52s did in their early years, Ricky also used this model with thick strings, but that's a whole other subject) and I couldn't manage more than 1 note bends on it. Mosrite, if any company, really should get more attention with reissues. But the exact legalities of the company are a mystery at the moment for whatever reason. Oh, and the pickups on these never were potted. Lastly, if anyone's after a guitar that's very similar in tone to a Mosrite but is not quite the same, go for a Hallmark from Hallmark Guitars. They have types in style of the Ventures model, the Ventures II model that Johnny Ramone used, and the Ventures Mark V. Their guitars have potted pickups and a longer scale length of 24.75" vs. Mosrite's 24.50", but they're still the closest thing on the whole market. Don't bother with Eastwoods, Harley Bentons, Danelectros, or those painfully obvious AliExpress counterfeits that look like a toy with the wrong hardware. None of them are going to get Mosrite tone which is something between Fender and Gibson Single Coils.

Kurt had two of the Mark V model - the Sunburst "Gospel" Variant you see in the case in this video (its serial number is B1697, the last known numbered one is B1700) and Kurt also had an older Blue one (1966 spec model) that Big John Duncan used for the Roseland Ballroom 93 show. Blue was later given to Pat Smear who used it on SNL 93. I think it's easier to hear it in the Roseland show in "Very Ape" than anywhere else, though. That said, about 1,550 Mark Vs under all of their name variants were built. You may note that I said the last one numbered is B1700 while only 1,550 Mark V types were built, and I'm not kidding you; the numbers overlap with a different model, an earlier mid 1965 "Ventures II" model that Johnny Ramone used through the whole Ramones career (though he had 4 of them, and 1 or 2 were stolen.) That's where the first 150 necks are, or at least where they were all originally meant to be. See, Mosrite did confiscate that earlier model when they had the chance (though they didn't get all of them,) and they may have had some of the first 150 numbered necks left that ended up on a Mark V type. That's also not counting numbers B151 - B276 or so that still were originally meant for a Ventures II... Mosrite's history is sometimes a bit of a can of worms. If you're wondering why they confiscated the 1st Ventures II, the story (accurate or not) goes that it was never approved by the head of Mosrite, Semie Moseley (the tall man seen on the left at 1:49) and then (best I know) his brother Andy Moseley (not seen at 1:49 on the right, that's Ed Elliott) designed it instead. Semie saw the first Ventures II at some point, didn't like it, and thought it should be discontinued. @@IsraeliilearsI I mentioned Ed Elliott in the previous reply under my alt B-52s account (Ed's seen in the video at 1:49 on the right,) and Ed also makes Mosrite-style instruments now that should be about as accurate as you can get to originals, just with his name on the headstock. They're not cheap, but they are made in North America. Also, Hallmark Guitars make instruments that are similar, but they're not 100% the same. Still, their instruments are about 95% there - the biggest differences probably being the slightly longer scale length of 24.75 vs. Mosrite's odd 24.50, and the pickups being potted where originals weren't. But their tone is so close that for $1,000 with a hard case, it's not a huge problem. Just avoid going for Eastwoods, Harley Bentons, and Danelectros and others with the same shape if you want to actually copy Mosrite tone.

Come As You Are tone, while enhanced by Andy Wallace's digital effect, is still mostly the Small Clone. Nailing the tone heard in the song's intro has confounded some people. What many fail to notice is that, in the intro, Krist Novoselic is playing a doubled bass guitar part behind Cobain's main riff; but he isn't playing the whole riff, just the root notes of the lick's two-note arpeggios (along with the half-step walk) and not the higher notes - which are G (the minor third when Cobain's on E), and A (the fifth when he's on D). Laying off the bass when the guitar hits these higher notes has a twofold effect: accenting the low notes but also making the higher notes stand out starkly. Those three parts - the two bass guitar tracks (Butch Vig said one was an "octave bass"), which when layered create their own natural chorusing effect; and Cobain's guitar part - work as a package to make up the whole picture of the lick in that famous intro.

Mosrite models are a bit special and overlooked. The head of the company didn't want them to be a carbon copy of anything else (though they have their influences from other makes,) and that's where so many Mosrite Copies fall flat; they don't have the sound. A *24.50"* scale length, Mosrite-spec pickups made in-house (only Hallmark Guitars and Ed Elliott [seen on the left at 1:49, he worked at Mosrite] get it right,) a neck angle, Mosrite-spec bridges and tailpieces. The Bridge seems to have a bit less sustain than a Tune O Matic, and the tailpiece is similar to a Bigsby, but I have a suspicion that it gives a slight bell sound. Of course, then you have to deal with the necks. Lots of people are surprised how narrow the fretboards are on the 60s spec models (though the necks got widened by 1972,) I literally have a kid-grade First Act Acoustic that's wider than my 66 Mosrite - the First Act is about 1.575" at the nut, and my 66 Mosrite is about 1.550" wide at the same place, the zero fret. And also, the frets on the 66 are barely even there (again, on 60s models while getting heightened by 1972.) The frets are 0.022" tall _on the Low E Side,_ while *_tapering DOWN in height_* to 0.015" on the High E side. No other company I've seen has ever done this, it's probably to make it easier to slide up and down the neck without having the frets feel like "speed bumps." I can't compare them to old Gibsons with "fretless wonder" necks, I've never taken measurements of one of those. My 66 model is a lot like the one you see in this video, but not with the "Ventures Mark V" name on the head, mine has an earlier and more confusing name that is "Ventures II" (which is a bitconfusing because this is the *SECOND* Ventures II, after the first one that Johnny Ramone used!) It was necessary to get a Mosrite to imitate early tone from The B-52s, Ricky Wilson also used this model; he had two of them, plus at least two other Mosrites. My 66 Mosrite Ventures II (version 2) has some of the most comfortable saddles I've ever played (no sharp edges,) and the Vibrato on it is also very good, returning to pitch pretty well. Sometimes I have to move the arm up or down a bit to get it back perfectly, though. But I also have a habit of soldering the unwound strings to prevent the wraps from unwinding. (Not that Kurt used the vibrato arm on his for anything, or used one at all. His was missing the arm and spring, or they were taken off to turn the guitar into a hard-tail. Though a person could install a screw of the right size to keep the end of the tailpiece upright, instead.) The pickups (for the Ventures II version 1, 2, and Mark V types) are 2 Alnico V Bar Megnets in each pickup with a piece of wood in the middle, then they are wound with either AWG 43 or AWG 44 (I'm not sure which) to about 10 - 10.5k Bridge and 8 - 8.5k neck, usually. Some of the Ventures II Version 1 models (but not all of them) are about 2k lower in ohm windings. And yes, they are the same pickup, though the Version 1 has a narrower pickup casing.

That is so Kurt using an instrument that’s so unique but very formulator. His approach on music making is one of a kind. Personally doing the same thing on a record I’m making right now and it’s all from watching and taking a lot of notes from bands like nirvana.

Only about 1,550 - 1,600 of these Mosrite Mark V models were built originally, going by all of their name variants. There are at least 4: Ventures II (most confusingly) - roughly 550 built (not counting a rare few numberless variants) Ventures Mark V - roughly 825 built Mark V - roughly 162 or 163 built Gospel Mark V / "Gospel Mark IV," seemingly 12 or 13 built at the tail end of the serial # run The "Gospel Mark IV" name may have been a mistake on one of Kurt's guitar techs when he said the name, but I don't know; the guitar did have a letter in the case to the original owner of the guitar, and the letter probably said what guitar model it was. The Gospel variant was probably made during the 1969 - early 1970s bankruptcy period when the Moseley family had lost the legal right to use the Mosrite name, so there's some chance that the Gospel variant _was_ named a "Mark IV" just to get past further legalities or to be cautious about legalities. It's kinda difficult to find confirmation that this is the case, though, since only up to 13 of them look to have been built. Wait a minute, I know of a Mosrite Collector who owns a Gospel Mark V variant, but not Kurt's. That said, I've never really spoken with him before, but I'll never know one way or another if I never ask.

Back in 1998, at a Hard Rock Cafe in Boston, was one of Kurt Cobain's Fender Mustang guitars on display. It had been smashed and broken. Stings attached and dangling. It was mounted, open to the air, just over my left shoulder. I reached back and touched it and inspected every inch of it. You see enamel transfer, scapes, and dents. The finish on the neck of the guitar had a little extra shine up top, and frets worn in. It was organic and preserved. That guitar resonated through my core without making a sound. You could feel the rage and dirty distortion. I'll never forget it. Thank you for sharing your passion. You are numbered amongst friends. Hope our paths cross one day!

Yea for real Nirvana guitars and a few others always go way too fuzzy it's like they never heard his tone before. They have all his gear,and still can't get it right. Kurt didn't even have some elaborate tone. He just used certain combinations of stuff and there are a few that are harder to match than others

If you want some other tone references, go look up the first 4 Ramones albums, or the first 2 B-52s albums (though Ricky did use an Epiphone for some tracks in the first album,) or "The Ventures Live in Japan 65."

I had a Roberts tape recorder very similar. I pulled 1 of the 2 preamps out to keep as a guitar amp, and I gave the rest of it to a friend. There's a lot of Akai parts in it. Love it!

I have the hallmark gospel prototype built by Bob Shade. He currently owns the trademark for the gospel brand of those style guitars. It’s definitely very unique. He learned how to build these style guitars from the guys who originally started mosrite guitars. Bob told me someone placed an order for a gospel but the only one he had left was the prototype so instead of making the customer wait for one to be built he sent the prototype out. At some point later the guy put it up in reverb and I ended up buying it. Congrats on finding the 66 one I’m sure that wasn’t easy to come by.

It would be awesome if you could do a tone recreation video for the del mar fairground concert. Those versions of drain you, aneurysm and smells like teen spirit are my favourites. They just have such an energy, with Kurt’s voice so raw and passionate, and the guitar tone so aggressive it gives me goose bumps. Anyways, I would love it, as I’m sure would many others. I wonder did he use the jaguar for the first two, then switch to the strat with hotrail(?) for smells like teen spirit.

I got a 68’ Morales Mosrite copy last year in a trade. It was made in Japan and sounds fantastic. I can get really close to a lot of Nevermind and In Utero tones

tbf, with a bit of software and a custom ir-pack, you could those sounds out of literally any guitar, i mean, that is what digital modelling is, its about circumventing the analogue components.
