It is interesting to note that both GIT and Cool Water were created by Pierre Bourdon(de facto secret in-house perfumer for Creed from 1980 - 2005) who in my view is the greatest niche perfumer of all time and along with Jacques Polge(Chanel in-house perfumer from 1978 - 2016) are the two greatest perfumers of all time. Obviously Jacques is the greatest designer perfumer but don't ask me who is better between the two in general. Pierre might have been more creative(perhaps because he wasn't constrained by a "Chanel" style of fragrance) but Jacques' creations were exquisitely crafted with quality second to none on a designer budget no less. It seems that Pierre Bourdon put Creed on the map, without him there is no Creed. He may even have had a hand in the creation of Aventus after he left Creed given that one of his proteges is the perfumer of Aventus and that a year earlier Pierre put out a fragrance that smelled quite similar to Aventus. But it doesn't stop there, rumour has it that he in fact had a huge hand in creating Joop Homme. Almeraic is given credit for it but apparently Pierre was working on it but was removed the last minute with Almeraic coming in to finish the remaining 10% of the job. Fast forward to 2003 and Mont Blanc Individuel is released which smells remarkably similar to Joop, two years after that Original Santal by Creed is released which also oddly smells very much like Joop. Turns out Pierre Bourdon was the perfumer for both of those fragrances. Why would he produce two fragrances that smell similar to one another(not unlike what he did with Cool water and GIT once again two years apart), well more than likely because that scent DNA was his invention all the way back in 1989, he felt a certain ownership over it. Pierre Bourdon's notable men's creations: Confirmed: - YSL Kouros - Creed GIT - Cool Water -Creed EROLFA - Creed MI - Creed SMW -Mont Blanc Individuel - Creed OS Most likely: -Joop! Homme -Creed Original Vetiver -Possibly other Creeds between 1980 - 2005 Influenced/possible involvement: -Creed Aventus As for Jacques Polge, well he created everything that Chanel released from 1978 to 2016 except for some reformulations/re-releases he made for Chanel classics that were originally released before his time. That obviously speaks for itself!

Fascinating history. The strange thing is that I love and own Original Santal but I hate the scent of Joop. I mean it's absolutely abhorrent to my nose. Hard for me to connect those.
@Crypt0n1an Жыл бұрын
@@ArthurFShelby It's very interesting you mention that. I own Original Santal and agree with you it is by far the best of the three and one of the best Creeds(in my top 5). Now this is not absolutely confirmed(Pierre Bourdon's authorship of Joop Homme) but there is enough evidence to support this while it is outlined in in Gabe Oppenheim's book "the ghost perfumer". Do note that he is only responsible for the scent DNA, it's possible that Almeraic changed it for the worse and Individuel was more in line with what PB had in mind. Nevertheless, I used to own it and considered it one of my favourites way back in the early 90s when I was a young teenager. There is no doubt of it's impact in the industry and the market. It was without a shadow of a doubt along with Cool water the go-to fragrance for teenagers and young adults in the late 80s early 90s. Cool water was and still is one of the biggest sellers of all time but back then Joop Homme was also massively popular(not so much these days). I agree with you though as it is no longer to my taste, it's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination but OS is the perfection of that style so I see no need for owning Joop and no longer consider it collection worthy. The similarity is there for sure but obviously OS is made with higher quality ingredients and far more timeless than Joop which was a product of it's time. Nevertheless it is one more feather in Pierre Bourdon's cap due to it's impact in the industry/fragrance community and it's about time he started getting the credit he deserves for his work thanks in no small part to Gabe Oppenheim's research. PS: I was also never a fan of Kouros but it too was massively popular in the 80s and upon revisiting it I can see why. If you can overlook the animalic notes it is amazingly fresh and invigorating, the quintessential barbershop/powerhouse fragrance. Sadly as with most such fragrances I cannot get around the strong animalic notes.

Similar to Aventus, he was also the teacher of Julien Rasquinet, who apparently perfumed Royal Oud, so you can smell a bit of his influence there as well. It’s nice to see Bourdon getting more off the appreciation he deserves these days. Definitely one of the all time greats. ...and of course shoutout to Edmond Roudnitska, the teacher of both Bourdon and Jean-Claude Ellena (as well as an inspiration to, and family friend of, Frederic Malle). That’s quite a legacy to pass down.

On my skin it does pretty well and if I over spray I get some pretty decent longevity out of it. The price is a bit steep but I will usually only wear it a few days a week. I like Cool Water. But to me it feels a bit synthetic and stale compared to G.I.T. They are similar for sure but IMO, if you have experience with fragrances in general? You can tell the differences right away. That being said, I will wear Cool Water for a work fragrance from time to time. Cool Water is a great fragrance for the money, but Green Irish Tweed is just simply a great fragrance.

There's a reason they're so similar; they're both originally by Pierre Bourdon. Bourdon was wanting to make a dihydromyrcenol based fragrance after figuring out that it was at the heart of Drakkar Noir, and Olivier Creed conned Bourdon out of the formula halfway through development. Bourdon kept refining the formula until we wound up with Cool Water. 😁

There is nothing wrong with creating an inspiration fragrance especially when the goal is to improve upon a classic profile. I mean, is every oriental on the market a dupe of Shalimar? IMO there’s a big difference between a dupe/clone and a fragrance unique in its own right but admittedly takes inspiration from an already established fragrance in the market.
