Cues 1. A rep is complete when it starts from the floor and hits the upper abs 2. Supine grip involves more biceps and needs more grip strength. If you lack the mobility for supine grip, using the grip for a few weeks will enhance mobility there. 3. Don’t lift the torso up. Lift the bar up to wherever you’ve set your torso while starting 4. Lift over the midfoot 5. You don’t need to wear a belt for barbell rows 6. Knees out Toes out, like for a dead lift 7. Just let the barbell slam down on the floor. Don’t try to control the descent

I need to preface my comment with the following: I admire Rip and his SS program and have used it with some success. However, the folks on here who are criticizing both the way Rip teaches the barbell row and his corpulence have a point. First, this method of rowing looks dangerous and is not an improvement over the Pendlay row. Secondly, while I don’t expect Rip to have a six-pack, he also doesn’t need to look like he has just swallowed a blue-ribbon pumpkin. He looked much better 10 years ago with still visible muscle and a slight paunch. He either needs to do something about his aversion to cardio or eat less. I swear, the only reason that they are clapping at the end is because he did not have a heart attack/stroke on that final lift.

Looks rough from front but that side shot he still has some muscle and the structure, still big vein down back his forearm. I bet he could bounce back and look better than 98% people his age group super quick. Just don't think he gives a shit, looks like alot of beer and Philly cheese steaks. A supinated grip also changes the angle at which the elbow travels, moving the "strike" point further back towards your waist, which engages more lats. Would recommend using the "natural" width supinated grip on a straight bar. "Natural" being where your hands naturally are (due to elbow valgus) when supinated with palms straight forward. This is rarely "shoulder width", especially for women (most women will be "wider" than shoulder width using this). Easy way to test: put straight bar at waist level. Let upper arms hang naturally. Supinate palms so they are facing straight forward. Walk to bar. Where you hands are, that's your grip width. Note: this will eliminate a LOT of elbow pain from doing straight bar curls or reverse grip anything with a straight bar.

More complicated way to say "a little wider than deadlift grip" as Rip instructed.

@@Interesting_Egg Very simple way to say you didn't understand what I said. The point being that this grip width is going to vary for individuals, and it may vary for an individual depending on the grip used; ideal" may be different for pronated and supinated, or neutral, or in between (curl bar), given elbow valgus. Just like it does for BB curls. It is more critical for rows given the amount of weight being used. It's not "grip width" which determines the elbow position; it's just that some grips (supinated v. neutral v. pronated or in between) make your elbows want to travel in a different way if you don't think about it. The comment wasn't about saying anyone was wrong, at all. It was an addendum that can save people a lot of elbow issues/injuries. It also applies to deadlifts.

What if we want less lat activation and more upper back (traps, rear delts/rhomboids etc.)? Then just pronate? Or will the supinated grip "take care" of it??

Hi Rip, I have replaced squats, deadlifts, and power cleans with barbell rows. So day A I do barbell rows, bench press, and more barbell rows. Day B I do barbell rows, presses, and more barbell rows. Am I still doing the program? Thanks!

Rip said you could replace squats and deadlifts with the barbell row, so yes I'd say you are still doing the starting strength programme

The barbell row trains the upper posterior chain while the deadlift and squat mostly focus on the lower part of the posterior chain, replacing squats with this you would have little chicken legs
