Met him randomly about 3 years ago at a gas station outside Wichita Falls. We were on our way back from a camping trip in Colorado. I had to return the rented travel trailer in Dallas. He noticed and was concerned about a low trailer tire I had. I had already planned to air it up and couldn’t believe who I was talking to. He shrugged off my fan boy excitement as you would expect and returned the focus to my tire. My wife and six kids were in the towing vehicle. I appreciate his no nonsense concern.

I really appreciate the safety talk. All video's I've seen on KZbin focus on good form for better results, never on not dying.
@Fortress3334 жыл бұрын
Not dying is #1, although we all do die eventually. Smart people do not die from a cracked chest benching or having their throat pinned down by the barbell, however. Whenever I see people bench in the gym, it usually looks like they're about to die. In fact, the seizures and spasms I see as they progress in their sets consisting of RPE-12 efforts are not unlike the death throes of soldiers who fell in battle. Okay, that was hyperbolic. In fact, I think I disrespected those brave soldiers. I take it back. Still, what I see in gyms deserves some sort of mention. It's like certain scenes from The Exorcist, you know, when that demon-possessed girl walked off the stairs backward on her/its hands and feet, that's what I see in gyms when people bench. Scary stuff. I'm too scared to even spot those people. The demon might jump hosts.

I was always told "don't arch your back". But as the pounds increased, so did the pain. As to avoid pain, I started to arch and I found a lower drop area eased my pain. I found out the hard way. This man is exactly correct. Wish I had seen this decades ago!!!
@maxxxmodelz40612 жыл бұрын
Whoever said not to arch on the bench is crazy. Never lift your ass off the bench, but always maintain an arch. Doesn't have to be a large arch, but there are so many ways to get injured on this exercise, proper form is the most important aspect to a good bench.
@joeridestrijcker445 Жыл бұрын
@@maxxxmodelz4061 well, the keyboard warriors on YT en FB see some footage from powerlifting meets (some athletes with really excessive arch) and start throwing a tantrum... it's bad, it's cheating, it's blahblahblah; most have never benched more than an empty barbell of course... ; I think Rippetoe explained clearly the benefits of an arch here, yep

Beautifully precise instruction. You have instantly and dramatically improved my bench press and I’m so pathetically grateful to you for it. Bet I’m the millionth person you’ve heard who is re-starting his strength journey after ‘life’ got in the way. A rotator cuff injury, caused (predictably enough) by sloppy technique in my younger days, has re-surfaced to become a desperately upsetting and de-motivating stumbling-block - the right shoulder grinds under any kind of weight. This is the first instruction that has given me hope of relieving it - and revitalising my impetus. Will be sure to play this video on a loop while I re-learn to bench with correct form. Grateful thanks, once again.

I've done this and seen others too, where the wrist isn't kept straight and thus allowed to bend back when doing heavier weights. It's a rookie mistake and a huge set up for wrist injuries. Very avoidable injuries too. So remember to keep those wrists in proper form as well.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Starting Strength. The progressive overload is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of overhead press form, most of the barbells will go over a typical lifters head. There's also Rippetoes nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his number of sets - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Bill Starr's routine, for instance. The lifters understand this stuff; they have the glute development to truly appreciate the depths of these squats, to realize that they're not just below parallel- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike starting strength truly ARE DYELs- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the rep range in Rippetoes day B of squats, which itself is a cryptic reference to Zyzz's initial workout method. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Rippetoes genius unfolds itself on their lowerbody. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a lower back injury. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5kg of my own squat (preferably lower) beforehand.

Thank you for that, Brett. And thank you for these videos. Although it makes me wonder: Which program do YOU use? SS, Wendler or something else entirely?

harlemdeni Depends on what my training goals are at a particular moment. If I want to get big and strong, Starting Strength. Whenever I have an obstacle race or some other aerobic endurance event coming up, I'll switch to the programming from the guys at Atomic Athlete.

Came here after hearing you talk about proper form on a podcast, this explains it really well. Thanks!

Anyone see Rippetoe in the thumbnail and know exactly what his voice is gonna sound like?

I learned most of this the hard way. I was bringing my elbows out when I benched and I didn't know what the issue was (cuz I never sought out advice). One day, during my back workout, I walked over to the wall and stopped about 3 feet from it and dropped towards it, caught myself in that (lowered) pushup position and noticed that didn't hurt my shoulder. I stayed in that position and thought for a moment (I probably looked like a moron with my face up against the wall, just standing there lol). I noticed my elbows were lowered and my hands were in a lower position than they are during my bench press. I was doing exactly what Mark said not to, and quickly learned everything he said in a matter of seconds. I caught my body naturally and my hands, elbows, and shoulders knew exactly where to go. Needless to say, my bench has improved amazingly since, and now, no more shoulder pain.

Good video, informative. Also very impressed how this scrawny cop from Super Troopers can rep 5 at 225.

+grthym21 You are clearly new here, the guy is a 275 bencher. Second of all he has the tricep and chest mass of someone who can bench 225 for reps, why would it be so hard to believe?

milk is cheap protein Because he's insecure and trying to act like a big man

I think pretty much every grown man thats lifts weights can hit 225 for reps its not that much
@InvisibleHotdog5 жыл бұрын
@@ammoTP considering what I've seen at chain gyms, there's a handful of guys at most at each who can do it for reps, couple more hitting bodydrive singles, and then a pair that rep 275 for 1/6th ROM for "reps"

As a woman I am enjoying these programs because I love seeing men be strong and manly and it is very much enjoyable to see that it’s not all about looks but it’s more about being a man and being strong. Keep at it Rip!!

Excellent video series. I've read Starting Strength cover to cover multiple times and these videos should have been included with it. It is great to see Rip using all of the cues from the book. Thanks!

Interesting I typically lower the bar to below my chest like the very bottom of my sternum. 225x5 is pretty good for a skinny fellow tho good job guy in video

You have an odd sense of body if you think Brett is "skinny."

I've commented here before but I have to do so again. These videos are some of the most valuable on KZbin. Big thanks to AoM and Mark for these.

I tried the cue of pushing my chest forward and out and my back arches, is it suppose to arch? When I was training in a professional basketball 'environment' they emphasised keeping points of contact on the bench including a flat back.
@teo11209 жыл бұрын
Alex Sandalis Yes, proper bench press form, as pertaining to the individual, typically has some sort of arch.

Alex Sandalis Everyone has different philosophies on this. Some say yes, some say no, it really is just down to you and how comfortable you are doing it. Some say that having all points of contact is a lot safer and will result in less injury, which makes a lot of sense as your stable. However, having a slight arch allows you to lift slightly heavier due to your shoulder blades being locked.
@AlexanderEmmanual9 жыл бұрын
Jackmerius Tacktheritrix Thanks great response. So safety and injury prevention the pro for back flat and power output the pro for arched back.
@FISHGOMOO43219 жыл бұрын
Alex Sandalis Pretty much, just feel both ways out when you're warming up, if you're feeling weaker on the day then go for the safer option, if not, go HAM baby.
