With regard to "do not look at the apple farmer's daughter" making you want to look more... I am pretty sure that is a trope as old as storytelling itself. Serious advice not to do some innocuous or mundane act due to some unknown peril is practically guaranteed to encourage the subject of the story to tempt fate. I would be very surprised if any person in the world were not tempted to look, precisely because they are curious why they shouldn't do so. I blame the human condition.
