You shall get to know about King "Shashanka" the first independent king of Bengal (Gauda Kingdom). He was called as the Gaur Adhipati or Gauda Adhipati. He was one of the most powerful king of eastern India. His capital was at Karna Subarna or Karna Suvarna , in present-day Murshidabad in West Bengal. The starting date of Bengali calendar falls within his reign and the development of Bengali New Year (নববর্ষ) is attributed to Kind Shashanka because the starting date . Many people do not know and credit Emperor Akbar (Samrat Akbar ) for the start of Bangla New Year.
King Shashanka after the starting the Bengali New year was popularly called as "Bangabder Proneta" by the people of Bengal. He was the contemporary of King Harsha and of King Bhaskaravarman or Bhashkarbarman of Kamarupa.
Kind Shashanka began his career as a Maha Samanta under "Mahasenagupta", of the Gupta Dynasty. And that after the death of Mahasenagupta, Shashanka established his own kingdom with his capital at Karnasubarna or Karnasuvarna. His endless invasions and conquests tell of a great king intent upon growing his kingdom.He had a large Elephant Army. His Elephant Army was very popular among his foe kingdoms.
King Shashanka built temples of Shiva in his kingdom. Famous Lingaraja Temple of Odisha is said to be commissioned by him. Shashanka had continued the Gupta Kingdom Tradition of copperplate inscriptions of Gold and silver coins.
