Do a body off restoration. The car is too nice, rust wise to not paint the entire frame and that includes getting the frame sand blasted and primerd ,painted etc including all plumbing of all brake lines and gas line etc.

I was in high school in the 70's. You could buy 57 and 64 Chevy's for $50-100 all day long. Damn I wish I had all the cars I destroyed back then.

Start out by making it a driver marketplace a motor and get it to work and move under it's own power! Then enjoy it for a while while you're collecting parts. That way if you want to take it on power tour or something like that you can. Knowing that you are remodeling your house and money is earmarked for that this doesn't have to be a beautiful car first time out of the shop. Believe it or not you will get more people coming up and talking to you about this car if it's a work in progress. On top of that while they're all blown apart they take up way much more space. And require safe spots for most of the car while it's not together. But it's your decision in the long run. Glad to see you guys are wanting to get her started on her road to recovery! Should be a fun project to watch.

Trying to put your perspective into my thoughts (youtuber and house renos); I would sell some of your cars, I know that is difficult but you just have too many to really use or create content for your channel. Big picture, a 3 car garage with lifts to store 6 total would be something to think about building. As far as the 55: I would like to see a used LS motor, 6 speed manual, aftermarket wiring harness, lots of details in the filming and get it running and driving. Then you could work on things such as paint/interior as you find time. Keep up the great work, I look fwd to each of your videos.

You will never regret making it a driver to enjoy as you restore it. Like you said, it tales a lot of time and money as well as a place to store it as its being transformed. Drive it as you go is the best way to enjoy it as you build it!

My recommendation as a fellow owner of a 1957 2 door post, go full restoration with a nice chassis, engine combo, etc.. but leave your mark on it. Built it to your style, your colors, etc. Take your time, the car will hold the value you put in it and will deliver tons in return. As less desirable projects arise, you can always restore and flip them along the multi-year journey. Those of us in the tri-five forum and with the Tri-Five Nationals look forward to chatting and seeing you in the future.

Welcome to the Tri Five Club! It's a bucket list car to own for sure! If this were mine, I would take everything out of the car, inventory the parts, vacuum it out and then pressure wash everything. It will really make you feel better about starting on it, see the condition better, know what missing parts to go locate and be more motivating. I would also use the cowl tag (seen next to your heater box opening on the firewall) decoder from the Paddock or Classic Industries to get the history on the car such as where it was built, the model, a V8 or 6 cylinder, the factory original paint colors, the factory original interior color pattern and the accessories. You may find it had a really cool color combination that you want to put back on the car. It looks like (my guess) a '57 210 2 door sedan that originally came with a 6 cylinder/Powerglide that was Larkspur Blue with a Blue Vinyl/Cloth Interior. With a major remodel going on (We did a full teardown while building my wife's '57 Chevy Bel Air 4 door Wagon), I would throw a 350 Chevy and a Turbo 350 with the stock rear end in it and get it drivable. You won't spend a bunch, freeing up the money for the home remodel and you can drive it for a bit as a rat rod to see how you like it. During that time, it will become real clear what direction you will want to go with the car in making it nicer down the road. The '57 210 2 door sedan is a great model and with Aaron's mad skills, you guys will have it drivable in no time! Best wishes on the build guys!

I am 75 and still build cars. My project now is a 1955 Chevy 2 door sedan. As you said nothing fits as a bolt on. Most every I purchase has to be modified for a fit. My saying is , if it was easy every one would be doing it. Keep up the videos. You two are inspiring!

When I first got my 69 Firebird… a car I’ve been wanting for 25 years, I started the tear down, took it all the way down to a shell. It needed a dash, cowl and floor pans before anything and it was my plan to do all the body work and make it perfect. It had a major dent on the drivers quarter and needed a lot of work to make it “nice”. After almost two years of skimping and saving and doing what I could with the budget, I just couldn’t get it done quick enough to get enjoyment out of it. So I decided I was gonna put it all back together and make it a driver and work on it as I drove it because I just wanted to enjoy the car. Found a Pontiac 400 and put a tremec TKO in it, and just made it so I could enjoy it and drive it. 4 years later I’ve been enjoying it, upgrading it, fixing things as I go. It’s been down for over a year now with this round of upgrades and I can’t wait to drive it again. It’s a process. I say.. get it running and driving and enjoy it and build it in steps and enjoy driving it as you build it.. sorry for the long story, but hey, if you get bored, check out my playlist of the build history of my 69 Pontiac Firebird. Do a minor restoration and have fun. Maybe a 283 or 350 make it simple and have a foundation to build on. I say 283 cause the era but make it yours. A 283 built could actually be really fun. 245-75 horses stock. That’s nothing to turn your head about unless it’s about how fast you gotta go. Watching your show I don’t think it’s about speed but enjoying the car itself. I’d say go totally stock on the build! No one does that anymore!! Step #1 empty the car, clean it, paint the frame, repair rust and protect the metal with a high end primer, body work ( bondo) should be done a a later date in the build . At that point the value will be higher and you may decide to sell it with profit or go to step #2 ( mechanical investment) the complete / finished process might take 3 to 5 years , do not rush it, be patient. GOOD LUCK !

First step, I think, disc brakes and suspension then engine and drive train. Run, drive, stop good, body last. Body will take the most time. You can drive it and have fun while you're making the body nice.

My neighbor started a restoration on a 1949 pickup truck he got for free. It was 95% complete, had all good glass, little rust. He stripped it to the frame and tried to do a full restoration. I helped a lot on it, as other people did. He gave up after two years, saying he could buy three of these restored trucks for what he had already spent on it, and he was no where near done. That being said, he was not getting KZbin revenues so as he wasn't in his case i would today walk away from it. I know that it is more about the journey. If your KZbin revenues can support this restoration, then go for it. But with a 57 in this condition, it's a very very long road ahead.

Foundation is first for building a house as well as an automobile. Get the chassis ready to send. Brake upgrades, bushings, spring perches, a-frames, steering etc. Then LS and 8 speed it, 9" Ford 350 gear a Detroit Locker then by this time you'll already know what you have in it and what you want the body to be. You can always rat rod it before you make it primo. I would definitely sound proof insulate all of the cabin top, sides and bottom. Get the ac and heat with dual comfort zones in the dash, a nice console with comfy buckets with matching rear comfort zone. Power windows, mirrors, door locks, remote start, heated and cooled seats, etc. It can still be a Rat but the comfort has to be ultimate luxury. Do you.

Long term projects have a way of getting pushed to the back and taking 3 times the amount of time so my advice is to get it running and driving, like Dan from D&D Speed shop or Mr Newburn's 57 cause if it runs and drives and you enjoy it you will make the time to keep upgrading it. So get it mechanically sound, running and driving. Then go from there I mean ya can save up and get a nice interior kit, all the trim and body panels (if it needs any) and last would be paint it. Aaron has a good idea doing it in phases, I think running and driving should be phase 1 though.

I’d get it driving with a used engine, start using it and letting it speak to you about what you like and don’t like and how you want it eventually. You can always get a custom frame and build it up later while you enjoy the car and then swap the body over later once the frame is ready.

for the 55, i would suggest put in junkyard drivetrain (motor, g/box and diff) to make it mobile so you guys can work on it and other projects while working on the 3 or so year project on it to make it look and drive amazing the way you guys want it to

I had a '57 in 1967. Wish I still had it. It had a 283 engine that was stock orange color. The body was green, 3 speed on the tree. Make it a "stock" "rat rod" with a suped up 283. big carb, headers, glass packs etc.

I have one just like this 57. 2 door 210 basket case. First is get it mobile. Even a temp small block to get it moving. Then safety. Brakes etc so if you move it, you can stop it. Please definitely paint it nice. Doesn't have to be a $10,000 paint job. But patina sucks. It's a classic 57. Make her look nice. She deserves it. My 57 has sat for years too and I am just getting started on it. So I am really looking forward to watching you two work on this particular car so I can learn too. It's an inspiration. You too are a great couple. It's fun to have your lady wrenching on cars with you. My wife is great but doesn't know anything about cars. I wish. You 2 are lucky. An approach that has worked for me before is, if you take it off fix it. That way if you need to bail out you put it back together better than it was and you also avoid boxes full of broken parts. You have a head start as all the parts are off.

All I can suggest if money and time is not lined up to make it happen then do your best to preserve it. Ghosting the metal work with A paint to continue the rust protection, install the Glass and cranks so they can come down when you need them to.The way I think of restoration is you do the best parts available that you can afford, LS is a cheap and readably motors that can make real HP. I'm Currently banking parts for my 1968 c/10 that my mom bought for my dad, I went to the hospital in mom and came home between them, when I turned 16 Dad game me the truck, not many people get to have something that has been with them since they were born and its Anniversary Gold and White. So House and Garage and daily drivers first then preserve and protect future projects. I enjoy watching both of you and at times Erin reminds of my buddies growing up that we did not always know what we were doing but we had fun doing it.

I love you guys, it’s been a blast, watching you these last so many years. Start a family! At 60 years old I can tell you that’s my one regret. I am a fellow motorhead, but if I had to do it all over again. I’d have a house full of kids. That being said you could always do the mechanical portions first. Put a nice LS in it and a stout frame and suspension. With a little bit of work you could drive it around for a year or so until you decide you want to become metal workers. When you’re old and gray you’ll be happy to be blessed with kids that love you and care for you. Get it back to original. But think about when you take stuff off. Like engine and bits. It would be easier to get the main body painted and sealed. Probably have the body dipped so you can see what needs doing. While that’s happening. You can source an engine and box for it. At least then the biggest area of the body is done. So then it’s a matter of getting it running. Once the body and engine are together. You can work on the other parts. Oh don’t forget wiring. Try and get a whole new loom for it. Or even build your own. But it would look amazing back to original. Remember there’s not many left. Just like the midget. You’ll be keeping them alive for generations to come. Keep up the great work. It will be a neat n cool project regardless of which way you decide to go. I would see about buying a savage small block out of a wrecked ( totaled ) Chevy that stil has a running power plant n drop it in so you can move it around under it’s own power. Some where along the 500 or less mark ! Good Luck with it !!

Just found your channel. I’m doing a 57 2 door post 210. Mine has a lot of rust, I’m putting new floor pans and trunk pans in it as well as two new rockers. The whole front clip was rusted away, and I’m going to put a new frame under it as well. If mine were as nice as yours, I would make it a two or three year restoration, and make it a nice car to show, go to cruises and enjoy.

Okay so you asked for my 2 cents on the 57... I would do the metal work and fix any rust (sooner is better than later and if you restore it later, you would fix the rust anyway). I would put it back together as stock, find a suitable engine and trans but stockish and maybe with a 4 spd. Get it drivable, and start driving/dating the car... meaning get to know it and and make a connection with it. That will help you to have a vision/plan on what you want to do with it and then transform it (or not depending on your impressions after dating). As an aside, good call on the Banks parts for the truck. I'm doing my Ex and using mostly Banks for it. Have fun and enjoy! We enjoy watching ya'll as much as you enjoy doing it. I always enjoyed watching you on Velocity back in the day.

Sweet ride... you can't beat a 57' Just get it running and street-able, then you can enjoy it and slowly add the goodies ! If you go the full boogie it will take forever & you will never drive it well not for a long time anyway. A nice small block if you can find and old school 283ci or 327ci Vette engine even better. Clean the body up a bit, but still go the full patina route at least till the time you are ready for paint. My love of 57's began as a wee lad watching my cousin build and race his 57' The car was wicked.... Black with flamed tilt fiberglass frontend & snorkel hoodscoop Running a 283ci. w/ Hilborn fuel injection & 4 spd with Mr. Gasket V-Gate shifter and 12bolt w/4:56's I have many memories crusing in that wild ride, snapping peoples necks as we rumbled past 😮 The best ones at the dragstrip, steadying the car in the burnout box... then watching that mean 57' blast down the 1/4 mile running. Sorry for the extended post, but once i got started,... i couldn't stop 😊 I wish you two all the best with one of the greatest hotrodded cars of the past... and just think if you pick up another 10 -15 more Tri-5's, you'll be right there with DD Speed Shop 😂😂😂 So start with one and see how it goes 😉 Looking forward to the build. Myself I started off restoring cars from 14 years old doing this and doing that, 10 years ago I was 50 years old and a good friend of mine am I soft bought a basket case 1967 Pontiac Beaumont to fix and sell and as time went on sharing this rebuild with a good friend I couldn't let it go. I would brush it with red oxide primer a couple coats and clear it. Then when your ready for nice paint job it wouldn't take much. Metal is safe and it will still look kick a...plus no need to mask off much. Win win

Howdy from Bastrop TX. I say windows, doors, trunk and hood with seals so you can keep it dry and safe as you move it around. Then either motor or interior, exterior last for sure. Do both, rough it in until it runs and drives, then pick away in stages as time and money allows. That's what I'm doing with my 71 c10, keeps me motivated which is hard with a long term perfect resto

The 2 door 57' Chevy was my 1st car when i was 14. Bought it for $200 from a friend. Worked on it for 2 yrs. I think yall need to bring her back to life. Storage is tough, too. I think I'd put up a pole barn if you have the land, to store and work on vehicles. Yes, you two have a very small workshop where even Finally has a tough time getting around...lol. Do what you two think you can afford and what's practical. Love your channel!
