It was so fun meeting you all on the road. The car is awesome and you guys made my daughters day. She is such a huge fan. We fixed a piece of our bumper today and she said “beat that Robby Layton!” When we fixed it. She was shocked when she met you only hours after that. She hasn’t stopped talking about it even after 2 hours of driving later. You guys are great! Thanks for taking the time to talk with us.

I started watching Matt's offroad recovery, then fab rats after the golden nugget rescue, from then your channel. You're now one of my favourite auto channels on KZbin. You almost restored a lot of that car mechanically before you even got it on the road. Well done, this is going to be an epic build. I can only drive auto with my hands due to a work accident but I would love to sit in that car if I won it and feel it running, even get a lucky chauffeur to drive it for me.

I'm confused, seems these fellas forgot their boat tank and I didn't see 74 dozen fuel filters neither. Also, how can you fill the float bowl with a syringe? Impossible to get the *perfect* amount like that.

@professornuke7562 Жыл бұрын
@@prdoohan By replacing the whole intake? Pretty sure that happened. Watched a few tonight.
@Dave-ei7kk
@Dave-ei7kk Жыл бұрын
@@prdoohan The syringe method works because you don’t need to fill it with the precisely correct amount. As long as there’s enough gas in the bowl to get the engine started and running for long enough for the fuel pump to fill the new fuel lines, the fuel inlet valve and float will then take care of maintaining the correct fuel level in the float bowl. So what he’s doing is just a shortcut so he won’t have to crank it for a long time since it’s starting out with a completely dry fuel system.

Robbie, as a Mopar guy all of my life (since I was 10) and knowing you are a big Mopar guy also, I'm curious...since you replaced so many things on the Charger to have a safe, trouble-free, reliable drive all the way back to Utah...why didn't you just get a Mopar chrome electronic ignition box and distributor kit or an MSD 6AL box and distributor for the car? Points are not the way to go for several reasons, they're old tech, they can move around, burn, corrode, the condenser can go out, plus, electronic ignitions provide more spark and increase gas mileage and power. I have converted many Mopars to a Mopar chrome box setup, Pertronix or an MSD performance ignition over the years...they all work GREAT to improve drivability, reliability and even for a day at the dragstrip ripping off 1/4 mile blasts. I just found it odd that you going to use that old, worn distributor, points and condenser for such a long drive home. We love that you are going to fix up this car and give it away to a Subscriber, we're looking forward to some great videos showing the process. We love your channel.
@darrinrice367
@darrinrice367 Жыл бұрын
I agree with your assessment of the reliability of electronic ignition; it's definitely an upgrade. I run an MSD box and coil on the cammed up 350 Vortec in my '63 Impala, and I surely don't plan to revert to factory stock. However, I think it's worth keeping in mind that just because electronic ignition systems are a move up doesn't mean the prior tech is horrible. I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles with point/rotor/condenser ignition systems. Do they fail? Occasionally, I guess, although -- personally -- I've never had one leave me on the roadside anywhere. But the parts are cheap, and EASY to swap out with the simplest of tools, and if you check them every time to change your oil, and replace them as needed, you'll very likely be A-OK. If you've got a rig that's burning out ignition parts in the distributor, there's something else going wrong that needs to get sussed out.

I had to change my clutch in my ‘78 Datsun F10 in a car port at my apartment in 1984. I had to ride my bicycle to Builder’s Emporium to get metric tools. My neighbor was trying to slim-jim his car open when I left. I could only find a 1/4” socket set made in Taiwan. The clutch was replaced through a 1/2 bell housing cover which made it very easy. I got the clutch replaced including the 1 mile bike riund trip in about an hour. After I replaced the clutch, I slim-jim’d my neighbor’s car open since he couldn’t do it in the hour it took to replace the clutch. I drove the F10 from Chicago to Los Angeles before the clutch wore out for a summer job. I miss the days of the road trips and backyard mechanics. Ironically, the F10 had the worst orang-peal paint job in a gold color. That was the first and last car I painted.

Robby, you got the name of the city Olathe correct, I'm in Kansas. Hillbilly is the man, the parts were not there for him. How about "Scarlett" because it will be gone like the wind. The trip will be great! Awesome job!

I have confidence y’all make it all the way to Ephram without a break down. Robbie just needs to say a prayer before heading out.

Start with a quick pressure washer rinse off. Makes working on it much more enjoyable from my experience. Love the vid! Keep up the hard work brother.

And that beautiful example of a barn find probably cost more money than I'll ever have in my life. Happy I picked mine up on the cheap...I may need new floors, trunk and quarters but still cheaper than buying that beautiful RT.

IN May 1973 I purchased a 1969 Dodge Charger / 383 cu, in. V 8 , 4 speed tansmission . No AC , PS , PBs. Basic model . Hunter Green with a Black Vinyl covered top. Lots of power it even did pretty good in the snow . 110 mph was the fastest I ever drove it on the test drive on I 40 east briefly . It still had more power left . Also bucket seats driver and passenger and a floor console with all the instruments available and 4 speed gear shift . in the console . Good luck with your restoration . It should drive those miles without any mechanical issue since you replaced all of the parts that needed to be changed . A Dodge Charger fro that era is special .

Nice work gentlemen. I'm 20 miles away by Chiefs stadium. On the Missouri side of Kansas city. I learned a few things in this video. I bet a few others did too. My money says you wont break down. Good luck
