We begin this exploration on a rainy day in an incredible abandoned control room - some say it's the best one in North America. And mysteriously, some panels still have power. We'll work our way down to the turbine hall, also still humming with power as the plant continued decommissioning.
This coal-fired power station opened in the 1930s. Its power generation increased so that by the 1950s its output was 256 megawatts. However, environmental concerns eventually led to the power plant's closure more than five years ago. A brownfield developer acquired the property in 2022 intending to commence environmental remediation efforts.
What's your opinion? Is this the best abandoned control room or one of the best?

Impressively intact for being abandoned over a decade. You can imagine those bulbs are probably on continuously all day everyday. The drafting table with the drawing is a work of art, everything like that now today is done digitally.

I prefer to avoid revealing locations specifics (and will delete any comments that do) but there are obvious clues in the video. It looks this good because a couple of explorer friends were in the control room cleaning it up. My timing for filming and photographing it were purely coincidental but I appreciated their efforts!

@@chrisluckhardt Cleaning it up? Serious question: isn't altering the situation as you find it frowned upon in the urban world?

@@whateverbikes The person who did the cleaning mostly removed junk and vandalism. He's an abandoned power plant aficionado and wants others to enjoy the control room as much as he does. My personal opinion in that case is it's okay.

Indeed, the humming made it feel like the power plant was still active!

Power was still on in some parts of the plant. But I'm not exactly certain why those controls were still active.

It was in the process of decommissioning when I filmed. The plant stopped producing power in 2015.
