Caleb had a big smile on his face when I drove up in the ATV and told me he was proud of me. Check out my favorite video collab with the best neighbor EVER! kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGfMoHWtoKyeoKs About the two mechanics, I'm beyond sure given enough time and reason to spend on the machine, both of them easily could have fixed it. The reason the original owner didn't want to fuss with it was because there was a serious problem with the carburetor and he isn't into using aftermarket parts, so a yamaha carb would have put the replacement cost much, much higher, and since he already has several other working vehicles, there was no point for him to invest, but all the better for me! Jason only gave up because he was here for a short visit and didn't have time to keep going on it. But in the end, I'm happy I was given the opportunity to figure it out myself, because that makes me all the more proud of my accomplishment.

Love the video. My son is an auto mechanic. Last summer he started to work on ATV's - they are a different kind of beast but he is enjoying it. In fairness to Caleb, there are so few cars with carbs left that most mechanics do not see them. My son studied auto mechanics in college and they just glossed over that part. You did really well - the stages of diagnosis - follow the path, start with the less expensive fixes... Cool

Prior to my retirement, I was a manufacturing engineer who was often called upon to participate in screening and interviewing prospective employees. My highest priority was to try to determine the applicant’s attitude. I found 100% of the time that an individual who had a desire to learn, would. Also, I found that mechanical inclination is not gender specific. You, Anne, just put a huge smile on an old man’s face; I would have hired you on the spot.

That right there means more to me than you could ever know. I spent a lot of my young life feeling stupid, not understanding *why* some things were so hard for me to understand that everyone around me seemed to just get, right off the bat. I still have to do some tough workarounds, but learning to work with my hands rather than sitting at a computer has made me feel so much more capable and willing to tackle so much more than I ever thought I could. Each skill builds off the last, and I’m learning to love my failures a little more. I would have loved to work with and learn from you.

Solving problems and figuring out how to fix or build things really is a joy. I worry a lot of people miss out on that. Also I really think that especially for kids solving problems can really build confidence and slowly opens a persons eyes to the possibilities in their own life. Hello Anne, I could not help but smile, as you discovered how your ATV worked mechanically. My first experience with a small engine was at 14, and it did not go well. I failed to put oil in a B&S engine at the hardware store I had just started working at, and let’s say, the engine did not run long. The store owner thought it would be a good learning experience for me to repair the engine and it started me on a life long journey to learn how things work. At 61, I realize, I only know a fraction of everything I still want to learn. I applaud your never give up, nothing is beyond my understanding approach to life. Stay safe, and continue to expand your knowledge and experiences. Thank you

My most memorable was a 4 hour debate I had with a co-worker on how to implement symmetry in an optimization algorithm (yes, software). We had our breakthrough and realized this obeyed Newton’s 2nd law of motion. We then spent the next 10 min debating what solution would take the fewest CPU cycles. This reduced a 23-hour calculation down to 20 min. Similarly, my training is in quantum chemistry. The Air Force assigned me to work Satellites. I succeeded because I simply thought of satellite orbits as electrons and was amazed at how well it worked and allowed me to “visualize” what was happening.

Nice to see it working and not dumped in the trash. I can see you have this figured out now, but there are only ever 4 things any petrol or diesel engine needs; Fuel, Air, Compression and Spark. If the combustion engine isn't running, you just need to work out which of the four it's missing. I'm always happy to see a novice home mechanic get an engine running when professional mechanics can't (be bothered to?) get it working.

My response was, so, I can't make it any worse. It had not been run in decades. I knew nothing about being a mechanic. I tinkered around with it and, lo and behold, I got it started. Often you get these things running to find out what's wrong with them. Sure it needed more work but my enthusiasm brought in some reinforcements - folks who actually know stuff - and it's been rock solid ever since. (It's so weird when they ask me if it's OK to proceed!) You've no idea how many parades it has been in over the years. Is it rusty and crusty? Yes, yes it is. Do the crowds love it perhaps even more than the shiny vehicles? Yes, yes they do.

I had the same quad, in the same color, and I too had to replace the carb - for no apparent reason. While I replaced that carb with a used one from eBay (many years ago), I had a Yamaha motorcycle last year that needed a new carb and a Chinese aftermarket replacement carb was the only option. I didn’t expect much given the low price, but it started right up and ran better than it ever had with the original carb.

yeah those cheap carbs work shockingly well. I saved the old one in case I ever fancy a rebuild, but it would require some serious machining skills I'll have to build my way up to :)

Awesome job on fixing the quad 🙂 there's lots to be proud of especially being that how many mechanics gave up on the bike and you were able to get it going? That's awesome 🙂

Why am I just now discovering your channel?? You have some great content! I loved how you explained your thought process on repairing the ATV, most of my most difficult repairs have been solved away from the machine while still racking my brain on what could be the cause.
