I very rarely comment on things I follow but I feel I need to say this to your friends my husband and myself live in an identical converted barn here in the Soulth Wales it was probably even more derelict when we bought it please please try and get them to reconsider the lay out the best thing we did in ours was to have the bedrooms downstairs and living rooms upstairs the views are better etc but by far the best thing is during the summer the ground floor is cooler than anywhere in the house and where you are is considerably warmer than here, really they won’t regret it if they want I could speak to them and explain.

The good part about this project is? its a shell, which means structural issues first, roughing electrics later. much masonary work on the right side to rebuild. Fortunatly you have the materials in the area needed, just need to do the limestone mix to start in. Being a shell is roughly a blank slate! planning on what to do with it when its all done is up to your young friend. great starter home!

Nice of you to help promote their journey. A suggestion on the collapsed gable end. Why not build the stone to a certain level then put a wood frame with huge glass in it. Obviously would be several large pieces with some structure. This would provide a stunning aspect across the that beautiful view?

Brilliant project. Lounge has to be upstairs to take advantage of those views, use the fallen wall as a massive feature window opening to a balcony. Bedrooms, bathroom and laundry all downstairs. The full barn doors is all glass allowing light to flood in with stairs to access the lounge and kitchen. ❤

I think it would help William to consult an architect or designer. They could share different room arrangements, stair placements etc. And how to take advantage of the fabulous views where the upper gable wall fell down. He could choose to have the architect project manage or just provide ideas at the start. .

Great project. My suggestion would be to make the open gable a glass gable but set back under the roofline sufficiently to allow a covered terrace outside to enjoy the view and sunsets. You could then extend the terrace onto the garage roof for an entertainment deck with jacuzzi. This way you wouldn’t need a covered area on the garage roof blocking the view.

Hello Tanya & William! Prefer the stair case to be built towards the backwall, as the floor plan would be wide open for more options and no head bangin. How about an additional small bathroon in the first floor, main living area, maybe underneath the staircase? This extra BR would allow guests/family easier closer access instead of using the master or upstairs BR. I subscribed. Look forward to your continued progress.
