This was an awesome zoo. I remember going there when I was young with my family. It's sad that places like this don't exist anymore.

I use to come here when I was a little kid. I was born in 1985, and lived in Hamtramck Mi; which is a small city in the center of Detroit. We lived about 5-6 miles from Belle Isle. My dad would take my brother, sister, and I quite often during the summer months. We would go swimming at the beach, ride the giant slide, walk around the aquarium, explore the nature center and forest, and we would always go the Belle Isle zoo. Are favorite thing to do was play in the huge wooden park (everything was made out of wood). The funniest memory I had at the zoo was when I was a kid. I was sitting with my legs dangling over the raised walkway. My sandal fell off, and a kangaroo stole it and put it inside its pouch. Sadly as the millennium approached, Bell Isle started to get run down. But thankfully when Detroit went bankrupt, they sold it to the State of Michigan which made it a State Park. Now the State Police patrol the grounds, and there is plenty of funding.

That is very interesting thanks for sharing! It definitely did look like it would have been a cool zoo to visit when it was open!

And now for an actual comment. This was a superb exploration video mate. That was a great intro sir. Great narration and the sad spooky music you play throughout was perfect. The music specifically makes the overall tone so sad 😢 haha. Loved the sexy Jake Williams action at 9:46 😍😉 hahaha. You two are the best! My two fave KZbinrs ☺️👌🏻 for sure now.

Usually your explorations of abandoned, once active places instill sadness in me, but an empty zoo is beautiful and satisfying, knowing the cages don't imprison wild animals for human entertainment anymore. Great location!

When I was a kid I lived in Windsor ,across the river from Detroit. One of the Fallow deer got loose from the zoo and we live about 5 miles from the zoo across the river. It swam across the river and ended up in a small field across the street. My mom screamed "A deer ,a deer". My dad and neighbour ran after it with a rope trying to round it up hehe. They never caught it and if my dad would have ,he would of chopped it up and fed it to our family lol.

This is true, during feeding or closure periods it is more than likely that the animals were stuffed into those small rooms

It's really a shame that the Belle isle zoo is gone, because of misappropriated funds, thank you kwame kilpatrick for your contribution to the city of Detroit, your greed, and your lies devastated A whole city, Detroit has not been the same after you, you should do every day of those (28)years, see yah ☺.
@pharoahmiller21174 жыл бұрын
The city funds were misappropriated long before Kilpatrick! What do you was happening during the 70s,,80s & 90s? The cookie jar was pretty much empty when Kawme took office in 2001.. Also the zoo was closed less then a year of his election so I hardly doubt it was his mismanagement that led to it's closing..

Don't know much about the island other than my visit last summer for the IndyCar race. Had a blast at the race. Would have loved to check the rest of the island out. Was the first time I saw a, or many protestors greeting us at an entrance to a race. Was sorta weird and out of place.

@retro6294 Жыл бұрын
Understandable. They never had the larger animals like giraffes and hippos. The larger animals were horse size and smaller, like lemurs and zebras. It was a small zoo and I loved it. But I agree they should have had more room for sleeping and eating.

Awesome intro music! The music throughout the video is also cool! I don't know why anyone who loves something like that place would stop loving it and not share it with other members of their family or if they were kids when they went there, not take their own kids to it after they became adults. I just don't understand why people do that! And although it's sad to see places that were once thriving in shambles, I am sure those who went there will never forget the fun times they had! And I can't stand people who paint graffiti everywhere. Most of what is written is stupid and profane. And as seen in some videos including this one, some of the people who wrote in spray paint didn't graduate from Hooked On Phonics! :)
@retro6294 Жыл бұрын
I went there when I was a small boy when I visited my grandparents in Detroit. I loved walking on those wooden walk ways and watching the animals. It grieves me at how rundown the place is and the gang graffiti makes it worse.

As of currently (2018) the Island is now owned by the State of Michigan and patrolled by the Michigan State Police and it is very hard to enter into these places now because the MSP are VERY! strict in enforcement. Also there is now a state fee to enter the Island. It is now considered a State Park.
@annem27715 жыл бұрын
@@PreacherJimC it shouldn't look like that if it's considered a state park.🤔no?
