Another fuel brand that used to be widespread is ARCO. They were all over the northeast when I was a kid, but they all became something else, or just closed up shop, 30-35 years ago. I thought that they went of business, but every time I would see a Dodgers' game on TV, there would be ARCO advertising all over the place, indicating the brand at least still existed in SoCal.
@kurttoy50356 ай бұрын
ARCO became the "new" Atlantic in 1986. Sunoco acquired the brand two years later. Atlantic disappeared as of 1995. IIRC.

Some states/municipalities require gas station companies to replace the underground tanks depending on their age. The cost of digging up the old ones and remediation of any leaks or spills and placing new tanks, is prohibitive. Easier to cash out, hide the money, declare bankruptcy, then start a new company and build a new station somewhere else.

Standard Oil Company became Amoco. Originally founded in Indiana in 1889. Later Amoco also absorbed American Oil Company. In 1998 Amoco merged with British Petroleum becoming BP Amoco. Most stations were rebranded as BP's selling Amoco gas. So not sure i any real Amoco stations left but BP is Amoco in all regards.

BP and Amoco merged in 1998, then started phasing out the Amoco name (except for their Premium fuel to keep the Amoco trademark in use) to just only BP in the US. In 2017, BP brought back the Amoco name as a sibling brand (think Exxon and Mobil or Marathon and Arco) to increase franchise opportunities.

BP bought out Amoco when they came to the USA sometime in the 90s. They started the changeover by saying they were "BP featuring Amoco gasoline." For a period of time that stood until all references to Amoco were removed. Right after the Deepwater Horizon accident BP dropped servicing some Southern locations and sold them to either Marathon or Valero (I live in Mississippi and had a no-longer usable BP credit account). The only BP I have seen since the changeover is a truck stop in East Mississippi near the Alabama state line (where BP still has some stores).

(Howdy from NC by the way) They got people to finance them, opened a place, then after about 3 months they brought in a team and removed every stove, chair, and plate in one night. When I showed up I had no job and I hated that because it was a good one. I did learn one thing: saganaki is an *AMAZING,* delicious dish. I got to prepare it tableside there. the reason why the amoco name was on or is on the bp pumps is cause amaco merged with bp and that happened in 1998. In May 2008, United States BP stations mostly discontinued use of the "Amoco Fuels" logo as BP introduced its new brand of fuel, "BP Gasoline with Invigorate". BP still uses the Silver and Ultimate brands for its midgrade and premium gasolines.

However, a brand-new fully Amoco-branded station just opened near me in early 2020, which was refreshing to see, so perhaps they're restarting the brand?

If Amaco went out of business, then they most likely closed all of their stores. If this location was a franchise location, then sadly, the franchisee lost his/her investment. Awesome -- This is my hood! Bridgeville borough & South Fayette Township adjoin each other & share a common zip code (15017). Unfortunately, this BP gas station/Fill n' Full/car wash has now been put out of its misery & torn down. Eventually that whole I-79 interchange & Route 50 intersection are going to be redesigned & widened. You should've come to that area about 2 years ago -- there was an abandoned Exxon across the street (where that Chipoltle is now), along with an abandoned metal plant called Ionics (which was behind that McDonald's), & an abandoned Burger King (which was where the Med Express is now, seen briefly in the distance at 10:52 when you are exploring the car wash). Then, on the other side of I-79, north of the BP, there was an abandoned Knight's Inn, an abandoned Texaco station, & an abandoned Star City movie theater, which have all now been torn down as well....The whole area full of abandoned businesses, but they are now tearing them all down for retail & commercial redevelopment.

There's different gas station brands all over the country. They even differ within the state. For years, we couldn't get Valero in Southern California, it was only a Northern California brand. We're starting to see Sinclair, and that's not a brand that was native to CA. BP even said they'd eventually pull the AM/PM brands out of CA, but that hasn't happened yet. We don't, however, have BP stations themselves even though we do have BP refineries. Florida has Wawa, and the east coast has brands that we don't have on the west coast.

This might be old news by now but in answer to the Amoco fuels question is as follows: In the 1990’s British Petroleum (BP Oil) controlled by the British Government decided to purchase certain former Standard oil company “(7 sister companies) as a result of the Standard Oil Trust of Cleveland OHIO lawsuit around 1907. The lawsuit was brought by the federal government against the Rockefeller Family the then sole owners of The. Eastern States Standard Oil Company better known as ESSO back then and in the rest of the world to this day. At the time of the lawsuit the federal government claim that Standard Oil had an unfair monopoly in the fledgling crude oil industry. The claim was that Rockefeller’s idea that they would own and control the entire business from the “ground to the pump”. That went all the associate business as well. The result was anything needed to put Gasoline in your car, oil heat in your house all the way down to cakes of paraffin wax to shine your shoes. Examples of this was that ESSO controlled railroads, trucks, ships real estate etc. the even had deals with the car industry and tire companies boost demand for oil was always growing. The end result was that in a short period ESSO controlled over 90% of the entire industry. This gave ESSO ability to stop any competition or regulation of wages, safety etc. The Federal Government won the lawsuit and The result was the creation of The U S Anti-Trust Dept to preserve competition and a free market economy. As a result, ESSO was divided in to 7 separate companies to operate in at the time the 7 main regions of the US and territories which remain to this day. Officially they are known as STANDARD OIL OF ........ New Jersey aka EXXON New York aka MOBIL Ohio aka SOHIO Indiana aka AMOCO California aka Chevron Louisiana aka GULF Kentucky aka KYSO (now known as VALVOLINE The American overseas territories aka CALTEX Was a joint venture between CHEVRON and TEXACO. It is now 100% owned by CHEVRON. The Rest of the world was not affected by the court case and is still known as ESSO. In 1990’s BP wanted to enter the US market so they decided buy a few of the Standard oil companies. The first purchased GULF oil, then the bought SOHIO and then AMOCO. As a result of contract negotiations and federal regulations certain parts of the purchased companies could not own and or control the operations. Therefore for a period of time the AMOCO brand had to be a separate entity. I m from Cleveland, Ohio and soon only Diesel fuel was branded AMOCO until 2 years ago when AMOCO disappeared completely. Two interesting side notes: The BP oil well that exploded and contaminated the Gulf of Mexico was an old GULF oil property that BP didn’t maintain properly. The second is that the company responsible for the construction and operations of the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline was a joint venture of SOHIO and BP. I hope this information answers any questions. P.S Sorry about the long windedness.

The owners must have been cheapskates or owed a lot of money that hadn't been paid back in ages. If they didn't owe a gigantic amount, they would have tried to take everything with them including the coffee makers in the car wash. Those coffee makers are freaking expensive. I'm shocked that all that stuff hasn't been stolen yet. In my town, the place would be stripped in one month, the front windows all smashed in and graffiti in Spanish absolutely everywhere.

We had Amoco in MD, but they got bought out by BP as well here around 2004 or 2005. Those pumps look old, too, card reader and keypad don't look to be up to current code. Also weird how the gas pumps are still in place, but the car wash keypad for entering your car wash code isn't... cool to see all the old stuff inside the garbage area, though. Hopefully someone will buy this station and revitalize it... I wonder why they went out of business...

Amoco did not by out standard...Amoco before the name change was American, they were part of the Standard Oil Trust and owned Indiana. Standard Oil (started by John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler). Sohio was taken over by BP, changed the name of Sohio and Boron to BP, purchased Gulf in the south east.

I believe there is a difference between countries on how the measure octane. 93 for you is probably the standard 87 here.

Hey there. Be glad you looked at this when you did. I live in Bridgeville. This BP, store, pumps, car wash... all of it, got leveled a couple of weeks ago. It's just a bare open lot now. Though the BP sign near I-79 still exists, the building is gone.

That car wash worked excellent. They used shammeeee's that slaps the vehicle and cleaned way better than laser wash.

There is an abandoned Sonic restaurant in Henderson if you wanted to see it. It's been taken by another business but the Sonic sign is still on both sides.

So if the Sheriff is or was cruising around with rolls of duct tape in his police car, what else was he using it for?

Update: there is 1 near the state capital in Charleston WV, it used to be a place to get Pennzoil gas until they were out of business and they took over until they were temporarily shut down for serious reasons for 2-3 weeks then reopened afterward, this time with the police department making sure that they don't make a mistake

There was probably a Ryko system in the car wash bay, judging by the marks left behind from the tracks and treadle.

You talked about 76 gas stations they just opened one up here in Florida i think i saw another one with in 50 miles of each other that’s pretty cool

I am surprised that all those 'valuable' are still there. Like all the steel stuff and salt bags... Also, I wonder what would have happened if it was a more remote station... Would anyone have opened the pumps and repowered them and drained the tanks?
@KC8EWU6 жыл бұрын
The tanks would be long drained by the supplier.

How have 2 newspapers from 2015 not blown away or disintegrated over 2 years and just stayed in the spot where they were supposedly dropped in near perfect condition?

Here in Somerset Ky all the BP’s have been turned into Marathons, and most of the Shell’s have been turned into Valero’s. We used to have our own chain of old school full service stations called Somerset Oil but they all closed in the mid 00’s. South of us in Whitley City there was a station called “M3” which had a Burger King and a AT&T dealer all under the same roof, it closed somewhere 06-08 and so did the Burger King and AT&T, and its 2018 and the building still stands, still has everything inside, there is still drinks in the coolers.

That's hilarious that Shell stations turn in Valero stations. In northern Texas, it's Exxon, Texaco and Shell country. Valero can barely stay alive. Near my neighborhood, I can find multiple Exxon, Texaco or Shell stations but there's just one Valero for 8 city blocks! And 7-Eleven is really digging its heels in by building another gas station less than two blocks away.

largol33t1 I live in northern Texas as well. There are five Valero's in my hometown, *four* of them on the Texas side of the border. It isn't that Valero is *absent* up here; there are just far fewer of them until you go further south, like Tyler (30) or Houston (a few hundred? I dunno, I'm not about to count them all!)
