This abandoned church sits in a dusty old town in rural New Mexico. Not sure of the name as I was just passing through. The town appears to be totally empty but I don't know for sure.

St. Catherine of Seina Catholic Church - Hachita, NM This building was originally Hachita's high school. In the 1970's a retired businessman from New York bought the school and had it remodeled into a Catholic church, in honor of his mother's patron saint. The church is now abandoned.

The Rest Of The Story … The Promise The dusty town of Hatchita (little hatchet) did have one notable feature: St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Built in the 1930’s, this was originally Hachita's high school. In the 1970's, a retired businessman, Daniel Suozzi from New York, bought the school, remodeling it into a Catholic church. Featuring a forty-five foot bell tower, with two 800 pound solid bronze bells cast in 1902, and a Stations of the Cross crafted in Germany in 1830, Mr. Suozzi, with the help of Hachita residents, spent years renovating the building. Now abandon, it is a testament to one man's promise to his mother on her deathbed: that he would build a church dedicated to her memory and her Saint, Catherine of Siena.

Wow great information! Yeah it was tricky to tell what was abandoned and what wasn't because there are old cars all over which are clearly not used anymore. I didn't see anyone on the town however there was a small store selling flowers and drinks on the very edge of town.

Found this about Daniel Suozzi: Wed. 2 p.m. Daniel Suozzi Passes Away In Tucson Daniel M. Suozzi, 83, Hachita resident died Thursday, July 25 at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. Mass will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at St. Catherine Church in Hachita. He will be laid to rest in a private crypt on the church grounds. In an expression of devotion he had committed years of personal physical labor to the construction, furnishing and maintenance of St. Catherine's Church which was named and dedicated in honor of his mother, Catherine. Mr. Suozzi, who was bom in Ruvo del Monte, Italy, was a Cheektowaga, NY Chrysler dealer for 42 years prior to his move to Hachita. Known for his friendly demeanor and warm smile Mr. Suozzi had endeavored to restore the small community.

That Church is called St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church of Hachita NM. The grave is the man who helped to build that church. He was 83 years old & wanted to be laid to rest next to that church. Key note. He never owned this building as some think & claim. He only helped to make the building and make it look better as a church then a old HS

I was a Border Patrol Agent and use to arrest illegals working for Mr. Souzzi, renovating this church in Hachita. He moved to Hachita from, I think, NY and built a nice house about 5 miles from the church. I guess things have really gone down since they closed the copper smelter, about 20 miles from here.

Is this located in the North Eastern part of New Mexico? I ask because my grandfather used to work for a pest control company and he would service the NW part of Oklahoma, SW part of Kansas, Northern part of Texas panhandle, and NE part of New Mexico. He talked about servicing a old church in the North Eastern part of New Mexico that had tombs inside that were not empty. He said he would always feel uneasy being inside that church because he knew their were bodies still inside.

Hey! Wait a minute Chris. Is the entire town abandoned? Did you film any of the town itself. What could have happened? If it's just the church, that would be not impossible as many of the old churches from yesteryear have been and or sold off for other things or development especially after being abandoned by the Catholic Church or others when the members die off.
