First off there has to be a shelter or rescue for animal welfare. Then the drop off fee can be hundreds of dollars ( in our area it's 200 per cat and 300 per dog) people have lost jobs don't have that money. Maybe they couldn't afford the duck any longer or had to move and couldn't keep him and had no options. At least they brought him to water where he could have a chance to learn to forage. Didn't lock him up and just leave him to starve. Glad he found people to help.

Actually we raised a Canada Goose and a Mallard Duck from eggs. My hen Chicklette brooded the eggs and raised them. When the Mallard became an adult he stalked my hens and tried mating with them. We ended up taking him to a place where a woman raised orphaned Mallards for our wildlife rescue and then released them into the wild on a five acre pond on her property. Not only did they do fine but my Mallard fit right in with them. It all depends on how it's done.

if you’re wondering, he’s a khaki Campbell drake, if it’s an honest guess I’d say they dumped him because they had too many males instead of females. in a case like that you can give him to another farm looking for more drakes to breed instead of leaving him alone. Ducks are social animals so this behaviour is seriously disgusting, what makes it worse is the fact he can’t even get that far since he’s a khaki Campbell, and that species does not fly well. So he’s a perfect target for a predator
