Growing up had kitchen countertops just like those, with white cabinets and red tile floor. Mom would get her bucket and scrub brush and get every nook and cranny. The green fixtures look almost like jade. They are pretty. Hope they get salvaged with the rest. Thanks for sharing.

the last house I went in to had what looked and felt like thin copper plate over the vent that covers the stove. The steam catching vent that goes up the the ceiling. Pressed copper plating covering it. I have it on video.

Not too sure without actually seeing it. I'll just have to wait for the video :D

They make copper stove vents here a lot. (We have lots of copper mines here.)Kinda look like roofs over the stove and have a fan inside to force kitchen smells and steam from cooking out. Some are hammered, some embossed and some decorated with hollowware designs indents and all. Very gorgeous and that is what I think of when you talk about vents over stoves. Edited to add that your stove vent is exactly as I thought so that's your answer. It has copper foil but regardless is beautiful.

I think this house is from the '30's or maybe '40's, because it has several features that I'm pretty sure are Art Deco: the corner windows, the round window in that door to the kitchen, the kitchen cabinets themselves with the frosted design in the glass cabinet doors and the rounded open shelving. That fireplace is definitely Art Deco. Even the alcove fits that style. It would have been for a vase or even a statue of the type that were popular in the '30's. I love this house and wish I could live in one like it.
@paulanull87316 жыл бұрын
And the bathroom mirror and tub in aqua. That is art deco if I recall properly. In fact a lot of that house should be rescued and reused by people who appreciate it. The porthole door is incredible, I haven't seen one in years. Wish I could get the plans for this place and pictures of the textures etc. It would be a fabulous rebuild. Oh and they had that kitchen counter back in the late 20's early thirties. Really stable plastic with a heavy backing. If I remember correctly it was in red, black, yellow and a dark blue. In the 50's colors were added like pink and gray etc. I would love to live in this home.

Hello Joey, J.R. here once again. Well, when it comes to condemning structures one must live by the old adage which universally states "Follow the money!" That will usually help you in determining why some structures are quite quickly condemned while others are not. Also while performing many residential inspections in the past 45 years I have often heard the old saw "they don't build them like they used to". To which in most cases my standard reply is "Thank God". For the most part, today's codes etc result in a much better structure. Maybe lacking in the general appearance of older units, the newer homes have much better electrical, plumbing, mechanical and insulation than the older homes. Mind you, this is only the opinion of a 75-year-old buzzard that resided in a 100-year-old adobe for a good many years (after putting much labor and money into the home I enjoyed it very much). Make it a great one and many thanks for the efforts you expend that I enjoy learning about OZ.
@urbexindigo51646 жыл бұрын
Haha hey JR I really appreciate your knowledge on this subject and it may interest to know that here in Adelaide we have the highest rate in Australia of wall cracks and separations due to the soil being renown for expanding and contracting. And yes the homes built prior to 1960 get targeted for renewal because or the older standards and also asbestos and all that stuff. I think thae character as you said is what people really mean when they say not built like they used to. And the fact that these old homes have a huge yard also :-)

Uuughghghghhh! That entire mid century kitchen sink and storage set can be removed and saved! In the US people would pay thousands for that-especially in such excellent condition. @urbexindigo51646 жыл бұрын
Not sure but there is a Urban renewal scheme in place that targets houses built pre 1960 and in bad shape that will automatically be mark for demolition and renewal. That whole block seems to be in that catagory. Developers will have dib`s on proposing ideas for the sites and the councils and renew scheme will approve the best options. But while that whole process is taking place which can drag on for years these house just sit abandoned. Squatters come and go and salvage teams will usually get the brass and copper first.
@urbexindigo51646 жыл бұрын
It is all part of the Urban renewal scheme. Homes that pre date 1960 and are in bad structural shape get demolished for new developement. This block was doomed for many reason including it`s location for prime new units and shops. The cycle of decay and renewal. :-)

That was quite a large home at one time. It looks like something from the 1920's, but must have been remodel'd in the 50's-- especially the kitchen. It appears as if it was salvaged- the missing sinks - much better than seeing them smashed. I wondered about those recess'd nooks in the walls. That blue one looks like a place to put something religious, a statue, or maybe a of vase of flowers .... If I had seen it placed in a tight angle of a narrow stairway I'd call it a "coffin corner"- Victorians placed them in their stairways; the theory being that an undertaker needed the extra space to negotiate a coffin down a twisting stairways. They weren't design'd or used for that at, but its a colourful urban legend. If you see one in a old stairway, now it has a name..... :) I haven't a clue what that little living room, squared alcove surrounded by 3 switches and a power outlet could possible have been for............. I thought a telephone?.. but there is no telephone jack............ sweet mystery. The round kitchen door window and the tile in the bathroom shower says Art Deco... someone tried to preserve something of the house's original 20's design. . Thanks for posting this......:)

That "shrine" in the house is common in houses built in the 40's through the 50's and was usually used as a telephone cubby (here in the States.)

Houses condemned due to movement of ground but they are going to rebuild on the same ground?
@urbexindigo51646 жыл бұрын
Yes because when these old home were built the knowledge of Australian soil was not great and since then there have been improvements and amendments to the national standards of building and foundation engineering so basically now Urban renewal programs target these old groups of cracked homes built before 1960 for redevelopment :-)

All the houses condemned? Where is this? Do you see any structural issues in each house? So interesting!
@urbexindigo51646 жыл бұрын
This is in Adelaide South Australia. All of these houses had huge cracks which result from sinking or moving ground. This block is right next to storm water catchment which has flooded a few times which could explain the foundation problems. This block is currently in the salvage and demolition process and I will be doing another video to show how it all happened.....Sad

Hey Brad thanks for watching. There is an Urban renewal scheme in place that targets houses built before 1960 that have structural damage. They will be demolished and a developer will but newer plans in place with what ever the council see the best options.
@paulanull87316 жыл бұрын
@Brad Farlow Councils are the Aussie, Brits idea of HOAs in the US. They decide land use and planning decisions. Typically, but not always, a group of older persons (mostly male) who decide how money is spent in what way that will ignore what people really want and piss them all off. Oh and the decision making can last years during which the cost go higher than the original estimate so they start bids again. Did I get it right Indigo? Or close anyway? I love your videos and channel by the way.
@davidbrown83036 жыл бұрын
what it is the land is worth ten times more than the house. When this house was built they give people big yards. But now a days and in a lot of cases the land is worth ten times more than any house. I don't know what they are going to build there but now they can jam about three or four houses on the same land.
@urbexindigo51646 жыл бұрын
Hey David your so right! And I looked up the developer and the proposal is indeed for a whole lot of units and groupings. I think developers put proposals forward and the council picks the best option or something like that. Thanks for watching. :-)

No, you wombat. I meant what else do you know about estimating the construction date of old homes? I assume your dating evidence comes from personal experience of your parents home.
@paulanull87316 жыл бұрын
It's been more than 35 years since I priced any lumber goods or designed any cabins. But you are right young wombat I did grow up with all these wonderful Art Deco homes(grandparents, older relatives) I lived in a classic mid-century house and during the 60's and especially the 70's furnished my own home we built. So you're right it is all from personal experience. Good to high quality experience. For designs and age specifications look up architectural plans from the 30's thru the late 70's. That will start you recognizing the design pieces that are classic to the period. Also furnishings and fabrics that echo the designs. Good luck young wombat "do or not do".
