Thanks for your effort in just getting to this site, let alone the footage of the aircraft. My Father was a Flight Engineer on a PBY Catalina in WWII

A great Remembrance day upload Rob! These were originally used by many Air Forces as patrol planes and during WW2 as U boat hunters off the East Coast by the RCAF. Later outfitted as water bombers!! There is a fully restored one at the War Plane museum in Hamilton. It's a big plane. Sure those massive wings and engines are at the bottom.

Would be interesting to know if they are at the bottom...I'm thinking they salvaged them though and the cockpit but ya never know! Thanks for the info, pretty cool!

Hey Rob, another great video. According to my father (retired MNR), there is another crashed Canso/Catalina near Red Lake if you are looking for another adventure. I am not sure which lake it is located on but supposedly it is far more intact than this one.
@OutdoorRob4 жыл бұрын
That would be cool...haven't heard of that one. Wonder where it is? Thanks Doug!

@@terrymacdonald3486 My father worked in Fire but not in Red Lake. We discussed this and the Red Lake Cansos when this video first came out but he does not recall exactly which lake it was on.

Whatever rattles on your camera, sounds like a radiation sensor going off, adds atmosphere very well. Lol. New sub here. Very good videos.

LOL! I have since bought a new camera. Thanks Chris!
@845SiM4 жыл бұрын
Cool, I kind of liked the rattle. Lol. Loving the places you visit, in the uk here so there’s not much to find or anywhere to get proper lost, but on the plus less chance of being eaten by, bears, mountain lions, wolves, hillbilly’s etc etc. 😂
@OutdoorRob4 жыл бұрын
LOL! The Hillbilly's would be more of a worry to me than the bears, wolves and mountain lions!

strange that the landing gear is down in the water was it sitting or was it in air
@twatbass5 жыл бұрын
it was picking up water from what i know. the accident report said it crashed during landing either way gear down in the water would cause big problems.
@OutdoorRob5 жыл бұрын
Believe the gear would've been set down by the salvagers as they dragged it to shore. Can't see any other reason it would be down.

Lotsa potential beer cans there! I built a PBY Cat model when I was a kid. It turned out real nice! Was just watching some vids of them yesterday flying at Oshkosh.

Why not lift it out with a helicopter? Lots of aluminum to salvage and lake to clean up. Even if it had to be cut up into several pieces.

No idea why they didn't salvage the tail...maybe scrap prices weren't enough to make another trip?

I hope he can swim, because an old wreck can suddenly shift & sink, considering all the rotting mass underneath, sitting in the water all these years. He was taking an awful chance.
