Today we visit what was once the largest mill in the south west of England.
Opened in 1790, the site has remains of each phase of power generation: water, steam and electricity.
Established by a family who would run the mill for the next 200 years, it thrived during the industrial revolution, employing around 3,600 people and producing 6,500 meters of material a day.
The family's assets quadrupled as the industry thrived, increasing quality and quantity and cutting costs by carrying out more production in-house, such as basket weaving, joinery, book binding and metalworking.
Nearby sits its sister site, which was developed as the cloth finishing and dye works, the site was fully powered by the river water, we previously released a video of this part of the mill, we will include a link on the screen now.
It later became famous for producing the khaki cloth used by the British Army.
Eventually, due to the cheap cost of producing fabric in third world countries, it shut it’s doors in the 1980s and has sat here ever since…
Plans to regenerate the site into housing fell through in 2008 due to the global financial crisis. It is on the ‘heritage at risk’ list and due to its grade II listing, is unlikely to ever be renovated and will remain here until they eventually bulldoze it.
It was a pleasure to see this historic building with it’s remaining features and seems a real a shame its not been preserved.

I remember those types of machine well. They aren't looms, they're Schlafhorst autowinders, for removing imperfections from yarn. The operative feeds full spinning bobbins into the yellow magazines on the front of the machine. The travelling machines at the back of each section automatically tie knots and change bobbins. The drums on top wind the yarn onto cones. The door at the end is for emptying of the waste yard from the winding process. These older types of autowinders were introduced in the 1960s.

You pair are the best explore channel on KZbin in my opinion. You explore a wide range of places and you get involved in the paranormal aspect also. From steam train carriages to abandoned Mills. You both say "oh yeah" alot which is funny 😄. I could watch you 2 all day long. Don't ever stop. Keep up the amazing content coming xx

It's a shame these places are left to rot. So many of the items could be repurposed. I love working with the type of yarn you showed. Makes a soft almost feathery piece. Another awesome vid guys. Love it

1:30 That’s a fire extinguisher! Awww, you gave it away and told us later! :) 3:47 Those are surely spinning machines, not looms. 4:38 Schlafhorst autoconer machines. Didn’t have anything that fancy at the cotton mill I worked at in the summers in the mid to late 70’s! Very little automation at all. Their view was that if there was a job to do, it was easier to have a little old lady do it. There wasn’t much spinning and coning to do anyway as it was almost all weaving of towels and old-fashioned nappies. It made good-quality stuff, though. I gave a GF a set of towels in 1976. She recently said she still has them! 18:30 Those boilers are huge! There must have been a large steam engine somewhere! 18:47 That one has the look of a Lancashire boiler with the twin fire tubes. Fortunately, having graduated by 1978 and relocated from Lancashire to the south coast, I no longer had to work in Victorian-era cotton mills with their limb-mangling machinery! Amen to that!

Great video. There was a abandoned factory one town over from me. About 22 years ago they started to restore the building making into living apartments. This building is a famous. And the man us Samuel Colt. Which is Colt Firearms Hartford Connecticut USA. He is burried up the street from me. I found a print of the building in my grandfather's basement that is dated to 1861. So love these abandoned buildings TY

I've seen machines like those working. The rail above the autocone machine was to support a robotic arm type thing, that used to travel from one end of the machine to the other, responding to the small red light which used to light up when the yarn broke. The robot would then stop above the red light and tie a knot in the yarn. The machine operative would have to stand back as the robot came near, or they would be knocked over.

I've worked in old cotton Mills like this one way back in the 1980s the wooden floors were dodgy back then and the upper floors were very damp due to the roof not being water tight, there was plastic sheeting hung up all over catching the many leaks and drips, the upper 2 floors were storage/ warehousing. Those long green machines look like spinning machines that spin the yarn and wind it on to empty cones, those round things were like cone magazines. Those machines were pretty automated, one person could probably run a few of those machines. They look older than what they probably are, maybe 1970s era? Those Mills are usually turned into flats because the actual structures are sound, just the wooden flooring rots. The boiler room was impressive, I remember the heating in the old mill I worked in was provided by steam from a boiler, the long thin radiators with fins on used to creak and bang as they heated up, the heat was intense, I had one right behind my desk! 😁 Cool explore.

Missed the premiere, but caught up watching now. :-) This place reminds me a little bit of the more or less only proper abandoned place we have in my city (Hannover in Germany), the Continental factory, which used to produce rubber. It's mostly torn down now and what's left is, unfortubately, entirely stripped of all the machines. I've been in there two or three times. But the architecture style reminds me a wee bit of this mill you explored here. It's cool, when all the big machines are still left. They could make such cool museums and/or alternative art galleries of places like this. It's a shame when they just fall apart. Nice video, though! Glad you didn't fall through any more holes or floors. ;-)

That looks like Richards the old yarn factory where I used to work,it’s abandoned now and I know and have seen a few spirits,especially the young lad that worked the lift an old lift with that was similar to a cage and the story was the young lad was putting in barrels of yarn and as the lift was going up it stopped and he opened the caged door and looked up and the lift suddenly jolted and decapitated the boy,and the lady in the Handking department her apron got caught on a spindle and her body was. Ripped apart and she’s meant to walk the stairs to the different yarn departments,worth an explore but I’d be too scared,my old office too was haunted by some children as it was they’re from the 1800,s

Seen many docu's about the mills so below are some sad facts Death before the age of 25 was common for child workers. ... Children employed as mule scavengers by cotton mills would crawl under machinery to pick up cotton, working 14 hours a day, six days a week. Some lost hands or limbs, others were crushed under the machines, and some were decapitated.

These machines are no good to any one anymore ,just scrap value ,but a lot of good wooden beams in there could be possibly reused for some buildings ,the excavators will be brought in one day to knock it all down when they need the land for other projects ,such is life ,old jimmy Aust

@philyew3617
@philyew3617 3 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. Pyrene was the name of a Company that made extinguishers. The little brass things you're talking about were filled with a chemical similar to Carbon Tetrachloride. The fumes that were created when Carbon Tet hits a fire put the fire out by excluding Oxygen. Trouble was, the people around needed Oxygen to breathe so it was LETHAL in confined spaces. Those things were outlawed in the 1950s, though many were still kept around. The extinguisher at 1.30 was a pressurised water and you set it off by banging the base on to a hard floor. Problem was the pressure was created by mixing Concentrated SULPHURIC ACID and another compound which flash boiled, creating pressure to expell the water. The Acid was in a completely sealed glass vessel and banging the thing on the floor drove a spike into the glass, breaking it and realeasing the acid to mix with the other contents. What could happen was, in the hands of someone who didn't know what they were doing, it was possible for the first liquid to be discharged could be highly concentrated with Acid. Sulphric Acid and people don't do well together. I used to work on general engineering in a mill for 11 years and one of my jobs was re-filling and servicing those things. If I knew then what I know now, I would have run a bloody mile.
